Following her last photo project Rockers, East London native and Discosalt artist Leonie Morse takes another look at youth subculture in the UK.  In her  new project titled Rebel Rebel, Leonie is still playing the time portal game with us. While her lens may have  jumped forward from the 50’s, she is still transporting us back to the 80’s through a series of intimate punk rock portraits.

DEATHBOWL TO DOGTOWN TO BROOKLYN BANKS

Skaters just cant get a break from the Man. Brooklyn Banks, the Manhattan skater haven under the Brooklyn Bridge just got the axe today. The Downtown Express reports that the unofficial city skate park will likely be used as a staging area during the renovation of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Good time to get your hands on a copy of  Deathbowl to Dogtown , a documentary by “Buddy” Nichols and Rick Charnoski that explores the evolution of skateboarding from a NYC perspective, back when kids were still riding hand-cut boards, and the city was mostly open game without all the laws against skateboarding we have today.  The doc focuses on a lost latchkey street tribe from the seventies known as the Soul Artists of Zoo York (no affiliation to the Ecko brand), aloose knit collective of skateboarders and graffiti artists with  sweet warrior-esc names like Puppethead, PaPo, and Haze who created a skating and art style uniquely New York, skating NYC streets and carving a pool at the very end of the 1 train in the Bronx they called the Deathbowl.  There is some pretty cool archival footage of the New York Skate and street art scene here.  Chloë Sevigny narrates and the soundtrack features the Beastie Boys, Minor Threat, Eric B. & Rakim, Wu-Tang Clan and the Talking Heads. You can check out the trailer below or order a copy for yourself here.

Want to check out some more old school skate vids, check out the MOMA’s  exhibition Spike Jonze: The First 80 Years, where Patrick O’Dell has created a compilation of skate videos from the 1980s on.

PARANOID PARK: SUPER 8 SKATE VIDS

Posted in top story

2007_paranoid_park_002
Somehow I missed Gus Van Sant’s Paranoid Park in 2007 but finally got around to watching it last night. Maybe it’s my mood of late, but the slow paced guilt driven Oregon based drama coupled with Van Sants stylized super 8  cinematography and a well selected gloomy soundtrack are just the perfect storm. The LA times described the films soundscape as “a wash of foreign noise” that “tweak the visual and sonic filter.” The diverse soundtrack features tracks from Elliot Smith, Nino Rota, Beethoven, Menomena, and The Revolts.  A really great pairing of music and visuals here that create a dense lonely atmosphere, worth checking out.

Check out these two new film teasers for the Vancouver fixed gear bike documentary “The Revival”, out this November. From the film makers:” In the name of good times, great spots and progressive riding, we are proud to announce that we’re packing our bags and hitting the road. Armed with HD cameras we’ll be heading out in search of some of the best riding North America has to offer. Beginning on May 16th, 2009 we will be touring eastern cities, starting in Toronto then heading to Montreal and finally arriving in the Big Apple. We aim to reveal the riding and culture that exists within each one of these amazing cities. Filming is also underway in Vancouver where the locals have been pushing hard to lay down some of the best lines ever seen on a fixed gear. Along for the ride are some of the most progressive riders on bikes today.”

PERSEPOLIS 2: IRAN SO FAR AWAY

Two expatriate Iranian comic book artists, who have concealed their identities, have reworked Marjane Satrapi’s award winning graphic novel “Persepolis” to reflect the recent election controversies in their home country. The original “Persepolis” which has since been made into an Oscar nominated animated film, is a black comedy based on the authors early life in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. Persepolis 2.0: Hopes and Fears Revealed, created with the original authors blessing, is a 10 page story using some new images plus images from the original book but reshuffled in a way to depict the mass protests in Tehran following the June 12 election. “It’s already a lot to inform people a little bit. Our work can only have a tiny impact. It would take billions for it to change things,” said the writer, who has denounced Ahmadinejad’s re-election as a coup d’etat. In both the end of the original and the new Persepolis, whether it’s 2009 or 1979, the main character, like all of us, still lies in bed at night dreaming of a better future. You can read the whole Graphic Novel for free online HERE

SUBMERGED IN NEW YORK

Far Rockaway, an inner-city, oceanfront commuter town is just a 40 minute “A” train ride from Manhattan, it is also host to a unique culture…urban surfers.  ‘Submerged’ explores this unexpected juxtapostion of NYC’s urban lifestyle with the profound relationship that surfers have to the ocean. Inspired by his own experience of discovering this scene in New York, director Jakob Daschek’s contemplative camera uses the surfers reflections to narrate this short film. Nice little video here showing just one more side of New York.

CANON 5D MARK II TEST RIDE

CRW_7147

Tiny little movie here from Sam Javanrouh testing the Canon 5D Mark II with a super wide angle lens while biking. Pretty steady arm on this guy and a sweet tour of the city from his cycle.  Reminded me of the ’86 Kevin Bacon/Lawrence Fishburne vehicle “Quicksilver”, just sans the drug dealers, rival bike messengers and sadly, the mesh gloves (tear)… mmmk, so god awful movie but a deliciously guilty pleasure.  Not only is there an amazing synthesizer score by Genesis keyboardist Tony Banks to keep you pumped, it’s grade-A 80’s Bacon cycling the streets of Manhattan (filmed in San Francisco) in a beret. Pivotal film to up your 6 degrees skillz. If you haven’t already, you should see it, because I live it in my heart every day.  “Sometimes things don’t happen the way you planned, sometimes you could end up lower than you started…but winning is a feeling that you never lose.”

THROUGH THE PAST, DARKLY: THE RUINS OF NEW YORK

Exploration #1- The Ruins of New York City

New York City’s skyline stands against a backdrop of congestion, fluorescent lights, cars, and a never-ending drone of noise. In the middle of Manhattan,  Brooklyn-based designer and all-round curious fellow Shawn Joswick found an opening that leads to a tunnel. Dark shadows are spliced with beams of light from above. Every hour a train goes by, shattering your ears with an ominous honk. Old cassettes litter the floor and the walls chronicle New York City’s graffiti history. Joswick jumps fences to discover the massive, empty structures that have looked out on New York for decades. Not knowing what was there, or who might find him. Climbing into these buildings that have been torn apart, gutted, and left a shell of their former selves, which is exactly why he wants to go and find out the stories.

Someone is finally giving us a decent justification for the New York City transit hike and a pretty compelling reason to ride the L train. Boobs. This past June, photographer Zach Hyman (Insert Joke) took some steamy 30 second shots on the L train of 19-year-old actress Jocelyn Saldana wearing, well…nothing. RADIOHEAD WILL NEVER PLAY YOUR CITY AGAIN…OR WILL THEY?

Radiohead-These-are-My-Twisted-Words

Earlier this month, Radiohead front man Thom Yorke was quoted saying that “Radiohead will never record another album.” Cuts deep.  Then yesterday, a mysterious ‘new’, or previously unreleased, Radiohead song called “These Are My Twisted Words”  leaked all over the webs.  Message boards have been blowing up but there is no official  confirmation yet that the song is actually Radiohead. Hell,  i’ll bite. The track is pretty convincing. If it isn’t actually Radiohead then someone has pulled off a pretty insane hoax.

check out the YouTube version of the song and judge for yourself…
