GREAT MOMENTS IN MUSTACHE MUSIC HISTORY: 1991: ENTER SANDMAN

Posted in top story

1991: Stache-Metal pioneer Judas Priest may have ushered the hardcore machismo aesthetic into metal subculture, but Metallica shanghaied the torch, taking the facial incarnation of anti-authority to the top of the charts…and into the suburban mall.  Metallica’s 1991 performance of  “Enter Sandman” in Monsters of Rock in Moscow is not only a consummate moment in the band’s epic stache-metal career, but truly a great moment in mustache music history. Lyrically, a song about nightmares, this facial hair opera is what dreams are made of — thick, massive walls of sound, cookie monster vocals, amplified distortion, an extended guitar solo, various styled stances of hair whiplash, and the ultimate exclusionary masculine finger at authority: the mustache. The performance yields a triple stache-shred threat with three rhythm guitar tracks of the same riff only marginally shadowed by three mustachioed metalheads; James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, and Lars Ulrich, respectively sport a beastly horseshoe combo, a thin painter’s brush and a five o’clock walrus shadow. In just one 5:29 minute metal performance, Metallica makes a stronger case for the mustache than they did against Napster.

But the night is darkest before the dawn. Metal subculture had reached its tipping point. Once synonymous with the hardcore-opposition-to-authority ethos, the metal-stache’s image was diluted.  Embraced by suburban middle school stoners and mallrats, a uniformed army of black t-shirt wearing posers with teen molester-stache’s was spawned in the Hot Topic womb and released unto the world, eroding the metal-stache movement of the early 90s. In a devastating move to disconnect the band from the molester-stache, James Hetfield trades his horseshoe for an inverted walrus with extended chinstrap, beginning the band’s slow descent from metal credibility. Exit light. Enter night.

GREAT MOMENTS IN MUSTACHE MUSIC HISTORY: 1969: WILD THING

Posted in top story

1969: The greatest electric finger-blaster in the history of rock music – and  one of the most exhilarating moments in stache-rock of all time – involved some very groovy lip flair. Jimi’s 1969 Monterey International Pop Festival performance of “Wild Thing,” which immortalized his iconic onstage guitar-burning and smashing spectacle, was only intensified by the dazzling exhibition of a modified voodoo chile afro-pencil, sometimes referred to as, “The Ultimate Experience.”  This achievement is so mind- and mustache-blowing that it stands as a true testament to the transferrable dexterity of the stache and answers the question: was jimi stache-xperienced?

GREAT MOMENTS IN MUSTACHE MUSIC HISTORY: 1967: STRAWBERRY FIELDS FOREVER

Posted in top story

1967: It always comes back to The Beatles. By 1966, The Beatles had reached a critical, career-turning point. Vietnam, social unrest, rumors of Paul’s death, and Ringo’s “acting career” had pushed the fab four creatively and spiritually in separate directions, forcing their tour to an end that year. Then, in 1967, the band flips the script, reuniting and resurfacing with a new psychedelic sound, the double A-side, “Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane” (later released on Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band). For all their media-hyped differences, bandmembers shared at least one [new] thing in common: the mustache. The Beatles take the stache mainstream, putting their differences aside to flaunt a facial hair parade of trippy, fu man chus. In so doing, the Beatles swapped out their baby-faced image to become the first successful four-man, mustachioed supergroup in rock history – illustrating both the awesome, unifying power of the lip rug and its psychedelic musical prowess.

GREAT MOMENTS IN MUSTACHE MUSIC HISTORY: 1984: ROCK YOU LIKE A HURRICANE

Posted in top story
1984: German Rock royalty, Rudolf Schenker of The Scorpions is not only the heart of the face-melting funf, but has sported a schnurrbart longer than anyone else in Hair Rock. His modified painter’s brush even manages to outshine Scorpion front man Klaus Meine’smale-pattern-baldness man-mane. While 1979’s Lovedrive is considered to have been at the pinnacle of The Scorpions’ career, Schenker proved the band had real facial-hair staying-power, forging his stache into the next decade with 1981’s mustache hair band bible Blackout. The band finally cemented its status as Mustache Arena rock superstars with the 1984 release of Love at First Sting, an album propelled by lady-tickler anthem, “Rock You Like a Hurricane,” which broke the mustache out of its cage and into your pants.  The scorpi-stache continued to break down barriers, both literally and figuratively throughout the 1980s, bringing the winds of change to the Soviets on the Savage Amusement tour and becoming only the second western group to “coincidentally” be asked to perform in mustache-revered city Leningrad.  Feel the sting.

GREAT MOMEMTS IN MUSTACHE MUSIC HISTORY: 1984: HELLO

Posted in top story

1984: The stalker-stache reached a six-month zenith on the adult contemporary charts with the release of  the music video for Lionel Richie’s third single and signature song, “Hello,” from the multi-platinum album Can’t Slow Down. The video, which attracted more attention than the song, features Richie as a bushy chevron-sporting music teacher having a seemingly unrequited fantasy love affair with a younger, blind student. In a surprise twist ending, the student reveals her shared love for the black dynamite pushbroom by sculpting a clay bust of Richie’s head that resembles Patrick Ewing (Hello, she’s blind).  It’s the creeps but nevertheless, a groundbreaking moment in mustache music history. “Hello” affirms that the stache can, indeed, overcome the creepy stalker stigma to become immortalized in art… and the heart.

GREAT MOMENTS IN MUSTACHE MUSIC HISTORY: 1985: PARTY ALL THE TIME

Posted in top story

1985:  Beating out New Coke, Nintendo and crack as one of ‘85’s most addictive indulgences, Eddie Murphy and Rick James’ double-stache hit wonder, ” Party All the Time,” marked a bittersweet milestone in Mustache Music History. Fans of the premier ‘70s soul-glow sex balladeer and Hollywood’s Goldenchild doubled their pleasure with not one, but two radiant mexi-soul chevrons performing side-by-side in pop funk fusion. Not since the 1970s had multiple stacheos so successfully joined forces to make collaborative music history. Sadly, the double facial hair formula was too much for some and proved career-killing for Murphy. Not only did it make VH1’s and Blender’s lists of  “50 Worst Songs of All-Time,” but Murphy’s ‘89 solo-stache follow-up anthem, “Put Your Mouth On Me,” could never touch the success of PATT, sinking him into further music obscurity.

IT’S OFFICIALLY MUSTACHE MARCH!

Posted in top story

discosalt magazine-mustache-march

The Mustache has always been a politically-charged form of expression. It’s been banned by kings, forbidden by employers and used as a form of social protest.  While the popularity of this once glorious grooming practice may have reached a low point in the U.S. (unless of course you live in Williamsburg, Brooklyn), Discosalt has officially earmarked the entire month of March in celebration of the flavor-saver.

[nggallery id=45]

Originally introduced to lengthen the partying and festivities ofDirty Stache December, which celebrates the mexi and is an offshoot of the original No Shave November, DSD served as an impetus for the introduction of other facial hair celebrations, like Soup Catcher September. Whatever you call the stache, tache, tash, mo, mouth brow, lady tickler, trash stash, crumb catcher, fanny duster, pushbroom, nose bug, cheech or the selleck sidekick, Mustache March is a month in which men, women and Discosalt come together to celebrate the nose neighbor.  Every week this month we will feature some mustachioed treats as we look at the mustache in art and music. So check back with us as the tribute continues.

THE BIRD AND THE BEE: A TRIBUTE TO DARYL HALL AND JOHN OATES

Posted in top story

Make no apologies, I love me some Hall and Oates. I celebrate their entire catalog. The pop duos fusion of smooth Pilly soul, self-dubbed “rock and soul”,  with 80’s man manes is a modus operandi for swaying and snapping. If the intro organ sound from 1981’s chart crusher ” I cant’ go for that (no can do)” doesn’t cause you to uncontrollably break into a wham! dance (later revived by Courtney Cox circa “Dancing in the Dark”), you might be dead inside.

So this week, Christmas came early for me. First up, Daryl Hall will be playing this year’s Bonnaroo Festival in Manchester, TN….sans Oates but…wait for it…pairing off with Chromeo, Montreal electro funk duo who describe themselves as “the only successful Arab / Jewish partnership since the dawn of human culture.” Can’t envision Hall, P-Thugg and Dave 1 sharing the stage? Before you wave a finger and say, I can’t go for that, you should check out a little preview on Hall’s web series “Live From Daryl’s House. I’m not ready for an auto-tuned “Rich Girl”, but you gotta hand it to both groups for pushing their musical boundaries.

Second bonus, our friends at Filter Magazine, tipped us off to a new album release next month from The bird and the bee, the duo of singer Inara George and multi-instrumental/producer Greg Kurstin, are set to release Interpreting The Masters Volume 1: A Tribute To Daryl Hall And John Oates, on EMI’s Blue Note Records on March 23. The follow up to 2009’s Ray Guns Are Not Just The Future, the acclaimed band’s third full-length is a love letter to famed “rock and soul” duo Hall & Oates.  The record features eight classic covers along with the original song “Heard It On The Radio.” As the no-nonsense album title implies, the bird and the bee’s feelings about Hall & Oates aren’t framed with a wink or a cocked eyebrow. Their love for the music is genuine.  With the intention of retaining the character of the original recordings, Interpreting The Masters carefully deciphers Hall & Oates complex musical craft, thus heightening their appreciation for Hall & Oates’ longstanding discography. The duo will also showcase the record with a performance at The El Rey in Los Angeles on March 5th. I can go for that…

Track List:
Heard It On The Radio
I Can’t Go For That
Rich Girl
Sara Smile
Kiss On My List
Maneater
She’s Gone
Private Eyes

MGMT: CONGRATULATIONS

Posted in top story

Columbia records recently tipped us off to some exciting news from one of our favorite bands, MGMT.  According to Sony Music, the bands much anticipated new album, Congratulations, will be available in the US and Canada on Tuesday, April 13.

One of 2010’s most eagerly anticipated new releases, Congratulations is the successor to MGMT’s Oracular Spectacular, the 2008 debut album which established the band’s potential as a visionary force in pop music. Congratulations is a collection of nine individual musical tours de force sequenced to flow with sonic and thematic coherence:  “It’s Working,” “Song for Dan Treacy,” “Someone’s Missing,” “Flash Delirium,” “I Found a Whistle,” “Siberian Breaks,” “Brian Eno,” “Lady Dada’s Nightmare,” and “Congratulations.”

Produced by MGMT and Sonic Boom (Spacemen 3, E.A.R., Spectrum), Congratulations was recorded throughout 2009 in upstate New York, Malibu, and Brooklyn and features Andrew Vanwyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, MGMT’s core duo, performing with Matt Asti (bass, backing vocals), Will Berman (drums, backing vocals), and James Richardson (guitar, backing vocals), the band’s live line-up.

Congratulations offered MGMT the opportunity to work with a couple of their musical idols and influences including album co-producer Sonic Boom (Pete Kember) and Royal Trux front-woman Jennifer Herrema, who contributed guest vocals.  “We’ve been lucky enough to meet and work with some of our all-time musical heroes,” Andrew says, marveling at MGMT’s good collaborative karma.  “It’s so great to be around such amazing and unusual musical minds.”

Ben and Andrew first met the mythic Sonic Boom (Spacemen 3, E.A.R., Spectrum) at a Spectrum show in London in February 2009 and wound up onstage jamming with the band on “Suicide,” a vintage Spacemen 3 track paying homage to another light in MGMT’s musical pantheon.

MGMT has become an international festival favorite with performances at South By Southwest, Coachella, Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo in the states and the Glastonbury extravaganza in the UK.  The band has toured with Beck, Yeasayer and Of Montreal, among others, while becoming a headline concert attraction in its own right.  MGMT is confirmed to appear at the 2010 Coachella and Bamboozle festivals.

With Congratulations, MGMT unlock a new musical world whirling in its own space/time grid infused with hints of music from the past five decades.  Soulful and complex, Congratulations is a surprising and delightful quantum step forward in MGMT’s ongoing pop revolution.

Congratulations will be available for pre-order on the band’s website: whoismgmt.com

STAR WARS PLANET POSTERS

Posted in top story

If there’s a bright center to the universe, you’re on the planet that it’s farthest from…or you are checking out some really sweet prints that even non- Star Wars Geeks can appreciate.

Chi-town based designer Justin Van Genderen, also known as 2046 Design, recently designed this series of posters that feature the planets of the Star Wars galaxy but re-imagined in his own personal style. The series includes Tatooine, Sixth Planet of the Hoth System, The Forest Moon of Endor, Bespin Cloud City, and The Dagobah System…for some reason spelled “Degobah”?, which i think is either a racist planet to the left or a bar along the Jersey Shore.  I know Wookies are from the planet Kashyyyk but I’m not sure which planet Snookies come from.

No word on whether Justin plans to create posters for the Tingel Arm sector: Belkadan, Sernpidal, and Ruuria. Or perhaps the green planet, located in the Sluis sector of the Outer Rim.  Relax, im not that huge a nerd…i googled them, i swear.

EBON HEATH: VISUAL POETRY

Posted in top story

Ebon Heath, is showing a lot of chutzpa as one of the emerging artists of the moment. His “visual poetry” pieces take typography to a completely different level, re-interpreting the way we look at words and language and are just really fun to look at. Check out some of Heath’s work or read what he has to say about it below:

When I close my eyes i can see the words of great poets like Rakem or Tupac flying thru the air and dancing with the same physicality my body instinctually feels. In the content of hip hop is a verbal dance between the MC and words, my work hopes to capture that dynamic flexibility found in bending, twisting, and chopping the language to reflect its content

ROGUE WAVE ON D-TOUR

Posted in top story

While updating the Discosalt Shows Calendar, I  saw that Oakland based indie pop band Rogue Wave (formerly signed to Sub Pop, now to Brushfire Records) have a few shows coming up in New York. First, at The Music Hall of Williamsburg on 3/2 and then, The Bowery Ballroom on 3/3.

I caught an independent music documentary called “D Tour” or (Dialysis Tour) only a couple months ago, that follows the bands drummer, Pat Spurgeon as he struggles to cope with a failing kidney, his search for a viable donor, and chronicles his fierce resolve to pursue music and live a “normal” life despite his condition and uncertain future. Not the lightest rock documentary to throw on at a party, but thoughtful and surprisingly inspiring to watch when you have some time alone. Its not only a compelling look at a struggling indie band on the road, but a compelling look at the organ donor system in the US today. It is also  a sometimes uncomfortably intimate glimpse into life’s quiet difficult moments. After I put down the remote, I walked away with such regard for Pat’s amazing, unselfish support network of friends and even more appreciation for the healing power of music. The film also features some really great footage from a benefit show at SF’s Independent in 2006 where the band was joined on stage by friends like Ben Gibbard of Death Cab, Matthew Caws of Nada Surf, and John Vanderslice. You can find the film on itunes now or catch it on PBS’s “Independent Lens” every so often. The band recently recorded their fourth album, Permalight which should be released this Spring and amazingly continue to tour.
