GIRL TALK ANNOUNCES GIGANTIC 2011 TOUR!

Almost 300 shows under his belt, and hardly a full week off, since Feed The Animals was released in June 2008 and Girl Talk (aka Gregg Gillis) is primed to announce another 40-city tour, all set to take place in 2011 before March is even over! Whether it be performing at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics, throwing the biggest house party New Year’s Eve (or anyone) has ever seen, setting off fireworks to end shows in Houston or San Francisco, or balloon drops in Chicago, New York and beyond, celebrating election night in Milwaukee, playing to colleges of all sizes, christening Pittsburgh’s new Stage AE venue, or stealing the show at festivals across the globe, Gillis has proved he works (and sweats) his ass off, and knows how to give people an exceptionally awesome time. Now, with this forthcoming tour on the horizon, he’s ready to multiply the fun with a whole new slew of ideas, and start 2011 off right!

News of Girl Talk’s imminent album is still to come!

nihiti: OTHER PEOPLE’S MEMORIES

[rating:4]

nihiti: other people’s memories
Label: lo bit landscapes
Release Date: October 10, 2010

New York based musical duo nihiti is a jazz-infused psychedelic dark pop/electronica band made up of The Surveyor and Dragan. The diverse, at times unclassifiable musical project, is notorious for their mysterious and surreal live performances  intensified by the bands dramatic light shows, which seemingly meld their sound into the visual.

Here are two free downloads from the album:
Download:Return of Kind Rope

Download:Black Cars
On their new album Other People’s Memories, nihiti delivers the same mysterious and surreal element they bring to their live performances but on record; taking listeners on a strange sonic journey between gentle low-fi acoustic valleys reminiscent of Elliot Smith to more extreme sonic peaks of noise more in stride with Fuck Buttons.

The first track vulture mentality sets an apocalyptic tone for the album which at times, almost lends itself more towards a film score.  Imbibed with subtle yet distinct transitions from track to track, its easy to get lost in the dense complicated layers of music that often bounce back and forth between seemingly structure-less noise to insisting percussion, both interlaced my evocative melodic overtones. Throughout the album, lyrics are rarely used as a constant or driving force behind songs, rather, vocals appear scattered here and there, as yet another instrument, often without distinction from other elements.

Tracks like “the return of kind ropes (laku noc, dusan k)” offers up a beautiful combination of keys, strings and clean guitar riffs with a tone of uncertainty. While, “black cars (a sinistra)”  – perhaps my favourite track on the album – is a loopy beat driven vocal-less anthem, heavy on bass shifting the album mood into more electronic terrain.

On the surface, Other People’s Memories is an album seemingly at conflict with itself; trying to find a cosmic balance between digital beats and organic homilies.  But keep the headphones on, turn up the bass and listen deeper. Other People’s Memories challenges listeners to experience emotion through the complex juxtapositions of these dissonant sounds, creating something that is both abstract and profoundly moving out of its own diversity.

We recently posted a write-up on Viktor Timofeev and his collaboration with nihiti. You may recognize the cover art for Other People’s Memories from Viktor’s work. Below is an image of the cover art poster that comes with the purchase of the album:

INFINITE ARMS:A SHORT BY DIRECTOR MARK PELLINGTON FOR BAND OF HORSES

Posted in top story

Does true love exist? Director Mark Pellington (“Henry Poole Is Here,” “Arlington Road”, U2’s “One”, Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy”) who recently shot the Band of Horses video for “Laredo” ponders the question in this really moving little short called “Infinite Arms”.

The people you see in the film are all locals from the area where they had been simultaneously shooting “Laredo” and they open up on camera about “love, in whatever form… pain, forgiveness, survival,” there in the desert.

“Thematically, I was interested in exploring desire and forgiveness, memory and home, decay and grief. I live for this stuff and needed to get out of LA and connect with reality,” the director explained. “The band’s music is twangy and aching so the desert felt right. I needed to see and talk to people, humanity.”

Pellington does a great job of this; complimenting these bitter sweet stories with some really beautiful imagery that brings new depth to the Band of Horses song. If you are a fan of Pellington, Band of Horses, lament lost love or daydream about finding love, you should watch this below (might take a little while to load):

NEW VIDEO FROM THE FLAMING LIPS: SEE THE LEAVES

Where to start with this one. Best video of the year? The new Flaming Lips video for “See the Leaves”, will have you seeing, well, more than leaves. The video takes the psych-rock jam off Embryonic to a new level that is better watched at home than the office. Before you click play, a naked blindfolded girl absorbs/ingests some neon yellow cartoon rays from a giant furry vagina ball and then shoots it out her downstairs business. Then there is a big fire. The end.  Surprisingly, shes not a redhead.

ALBUM STREAM: SUCKERS: WILD SMILE

If you haven’t checked out Brooklyn quartet Sucker’s most recent album Wild Smile, which followed up last years eponymous four-song EP,  you can stream it below. Or if you order it from the band on their site here, you will  immediately get a digital download of the entire album, along with a pair of exclusive acoustic renditions of tracks “Martha” and “Black Sheep” from the LP sent directly to your email address. While the cover art alone is worth buying the Anand Wilder (Yeasayer) produced album, there are some really awesome jams here; a solid mix of indie-art rock, thats equal part experimental and accessible, at times, echoing some of the glam grandeur of Bowie.  Check back soon with Discosalt for our full interview with the band, where we discuss everything from their new tour with Menomena to The Smurfs.

FREE MP3:LELAND SUNDRIES:ELEGY

Leland Sundries is the mostly solo project of New York based Nick Loss-Eaton. He is re-branding Nashville’s original blues Americana with a touch of indie rock sarcasm.

Although he isn’t the first person to use a resonator guitar (see “Bon Iver”), it is a refreshing sound in a landscape of bands utilizing the same 3 piece set over and over. Leland Sundries has also been known to use a 2 string Cigar Box Guitar made in Memphis, giving his New York audiences the chance to experience something that few city kids even realize exists. Loss-Eaton also uses a megaphone-harmonica set up which captures the vintage-recording-scratchy echo that defines the original Americana sound for modern audiences.

For me, the cigar box was a sound that I had heard many times, but could never actually identify. Played with some hefty slide and nice backing guitars by Dan Kaplan, the Cigar Box was definitely my favorite surprise at the show. The stand out Leland Sundries song was “Giving Up Redheads” which according to insider,s might just be Loss-Eaton’s favorite kind of lady. Touching on the classical theme of love-lost man, Leland Sundries takes the twang-y Americana sound and infuses it with a little bit of classic rock styling and extra energy.

Leland Sundries plays both solo and with Dan Kaplan’s back up guitar. I liked a little bit of back up guitar and vocals to both support and define Loss-Eaton’s intended sound. I also saw some of Dan Kaplan’s solo set (with some nice backing by Mr. Nick Loss-Eaton) and was struck by the charming quality to Kaplan’s voice. His acoustic guitar and sweet vocals are certainly a crowd pleaser.

Although I only stayed for a few songs, I felt there was real potential for a bigger collaboration between Loss-Eaton and Kaplan. They have very different sounds and very different strengths. I want some banjo/cigar box twang with Kaplan’s soft strumming and delicate vocals. I want some deep spoken word growls from Loss-Eaton on top of the soft strumming and delicate voice of Kaplan. There is a juxtaposition there that I think could be explored.

Leland Sundries is playing in October, but there are whispers of shows upcoming in the next few weeks, if we hear anything.

On July 15th Rooftop Films, IndieWIRE and SnagFilms will celebrate their birthdays with a special sneak preview screening of AARDVARK, the debut feature film from noted cinematographer Kitao Sakurai.

AARDVARK is perhaps the first narrative film to star a man blind since birth. In a role inspired by his own life, Larry Lewis plays a solitary man recovering from alcoholism and working towards stability. When he joins a Jiu Jitsu academy he finds a close friend in his young hard-partying instructor, Darren. But, as disturbing aspects of Darren’s life are revealed Larry soon finds himself alone and faced with unraveling the consequences of a horrific act of violence.

Rooftop Films, IndieWIRE and SnagFilms are pleased to present this special sneak preview as a joint celebration of our birthdays. Three New York City organizations committed to supporting independent cinema, all born around the same time, we have grown up together as a vital part of the independent film scene in New York and around the world.

Since July 1996, IndieWIRE has been covering the business and art of indie film, becoming a mainstay in the global press and providing a crucial critical voice. Since July 1997, Rooftop Films has been attracting thousands of viewers to unique outdoor screenings of movies that would otherwise go unseen, and supporting independent filmmakers through grants, partnerships, services and education. Since July 2008, Snag Films has been finding the world’s most compelling documentaries and making them available to audiences world wide for free via the web, allowing other websites to easily “snag” a film and post it elsewhere.

On July 15, 2010, Rooftop, IndieWIRE and Snag will jointly celebrate our birthdays, and the independent film scene we care so much about. This screening of Aardvark, the debut feature by Kitao Sakurai, represents so much of what the three organizations stand for: discovering emerging directors, supporting independent filmmakers, bringing new unseen films to audiences, building a community around cinema, and, of course, hosting great events. This unique event showcases Aardvark prior to its official US and international festival premieres.

“Our organizations are all dedicated to giving exposure to exceptional independent films,” said Mark Elijah Rosenberg, Founder and Artistic Director of Rooftop Films. “Aardvark is the perfect film to celebrate this collective goal. Sakurai is a first-time filmmaker with a strong, distinctive vision who has crafted a thriller that transcends genre. Combining a tight plot with a disquieting mood, the film is suffused with a raw emotional power that immerses viewers in the psyche of a fascinating and wholly unique protagonist.”

The event will be held on top of the gorgeously gritty Open Road Rooftop, in the Lower East Side. Before the movie, there will be live music by the film’s composer, Fall On Your Sword. After the screening, we will have a Q&A with Kitao Sakurai, and an after-party with free drinks courtesy of Radeberger Pilsner and Sailor Jerry Rum.

BROOKLYN TRANSFORMATIONS – FREE SHOW

Neighborhoods are transformed. Communities are fractured. People change. These shifts are common in Brooklyn and throughout urban America. Whether because of natural disasters (and bureaucratic failures) or aberrant designs (and political acquiescence), when cities are torn asunder the victims are all too often the lower class. But in this program of short films, we have stories in which the changes don’t exclusively have negative results. Individuals adapt with remarkable resilience, groups form new bonds, cities find a new face. These films, made entirely by Brooklyn filmmakers–artists in the heart of urban change in America—include personal stories that are by turns quirky, charming, moving and inspiring. A co-presentation with the Brooklyn Arts Council, this program delves deep into the problems of gentrification and immigration, and digs up hope and happiness.

FLOOD TIDE: REMIXED FREE AT ROOFTOP FILMS

Posted in top story

There is a new live music cinema event coming up at Rooftop Films: Flood Tide: Remixed. The film is a remarkable ramshackle river raft journey along the Hudson River, filmed during Swoon’s Swimming Cites of the Switchback Sea, and performed with a live musical score by chamber folk sextet Dark Dark Dark. In advance of Flood Tide’s upcoming theatrical release in Fall 2010, Flood Tide: Remixed is a 50-minute collage of live music and footage from the feature film.

WHEN:

Wednesday, July 7th

FLOOD TIDE: REMIXED – FREE SHOW

It was the summer the gas stations closed. The summer they played music in the old mill. The summer they left. Flood Tide tells the story of four musicians who craft extraordinary boats out of whatever junk they can find and set out for open water. A remixed version of the film — accompanied by a live musical score by chamber folk sextet Dark Dark Dark — will open Rooftop Films’ series at Socrates Sculpture Park on July 7th.

MORE ABOUT THE FILM:

Blurring the line between fact and fiction Flood Tide was shot on the Hudson River during the real-life art-raft project The Swimming Cities of the Switchback Sea, a concept dreamed-up by the artist Swoon and built by an eclectic group of artists and performers. In the summer of 2008 the crew built and floated seven large, boat-sculptures down the Hudson River.

Director Todd Chandler, cinematographer Ava Berkofsky and collaborators from the bands Dark Dark Dark and Fall Harbor made a film along the surreal voyage.

In advance of the upcoming feature film’s release in Fall 2010, Flood Tide:

Remixed is a 50-minute composition of footage from Flood Tide – set to a live soundtrack written and performed by Dark Dark Dark. Featuring material not used in the narrative film, Flood Tide: Remixed is a meditative journey down a strange and meandering river that flows both ways with the tides. The handmade boats and their crews drift past empty new condo developments, explore crumbling castles and swim in iridescent quarries. They get stopped by torrents of rain and groaning motors.

On July 7 Flood Tide: Remixed has its debut showing at Socrates Sculpture Garden on the East River, less than a mile away from where the Swimming Cities fleet made port in the East River two years ago.

THIS WEEK FROM ROOFTOP FILMS: INSUSTRIANCE, UNAMI

Posted in top story

This weekend at Rooftop are two great short film programs at the historic Old American Can Factory. Built as a canning factory in 1886 on the Gowanus Canal, it was redeveloped in 2003 as an industrial haven for a curated community of more than 200 people working in the creative industries, including us!

On Friday, they will be screening “Industriance,” a striking program of short films where self-constructing buildings battle for fidelity, makers of mold-o-form plastic deer muddle their love, and Werner Herzog plays a discarded plastic bag desperately seeking the meaning of existence. On Saturday, we’re presenting a collection of films from the Umami Festival, whose goal is to use art to increase awareness of the power food has to influence and shape both diners and cooks.

Friday, July 2nd

INDUSTRIANCE

Since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, philosophers have railed against dehumanization, as machines replaced people in the workplace and technology came to dominate our daily lives. Giant factories churned out poisonous products while chewing up and spitting out replaceable workers. Urban landscapes became increasingly alienating as automobiles and skyscrapers secluded and dwarfed individuals. But who would’ve thought that we’d move so quickly to a post-industrial world dominated by virtual products and cyber-realities? A world with no use for the physical objects of the recent past, and no place for the makers and consumers of formerly quaint and useful materials. We now live in age where we must sentimentalize our trash in order to save ourselves from annihilation by way of abstraction. Amidst the changing landscape in industry, architecture and manufacturing, this dynamic program of short films is about people (and objects) searching for meaning, connection and love.

Umami is the fifth taste sensed by the human tongue (in addition to sweet, salty, bitter and sour). It’s a Japanese word meaning “savory” or “meaty” and applies to a sensation common in meats, cheese and other protein-rich foods or to “earthy” foods such as mushrooms and soy sauce. Umami’s screening of international artist’s short food films is pure umami: earthy sensations transcending the expected. Hotdogs become ritual objects, tortillas offer language lessons and gefilte fish is deconstructed. This showing is nothing like Food Network — its sensibility expands into a fifth sense.

Umami: Food and Art Festival is a non-profit, biennale event created in 2008. The festival works in partnership with other organizations in New York City to foster collaborations between artists and food professionals. By approaching food through art, Umami frames it as stimulating and inspiring, a positive approach leading to innovative solutions to some of the national challenges we face today. Umami encourages art based in everyday life and materials, illustrating that art can be found anywhere and can be produced at any time with the simplest means. The festival’s key objectives are to use food as a common thread to look at and integrate art into daily life and to broaden the horizon of food as an artistic medium.

THE TIMELESS ART OF BIKE DANCING: QUICKSILVER VS. RAD

Posted in top story

1986 marked a monumental year in the art of freestyle bike dancing on film. Neither bike dancing, the cinema, nor I would ever be the same again. Preview two of Discosalt’s favorite bike dancing films below:

Quicksilver (1986):

For Jack Casey, winning is a feeling you never lose… and neither is the feeling you get after watching grade-A Bacon bike dance moves like the ones featured in the biking tour de force Quicksilver. Bacon may have traded his three-piece suit for a ten-speed and the streets but he never barters on performance value. Life in the fast lane just became a way of life.

Rad (1986):

It was going to take a lot more than skill for Cru Jones to conquer the toughest BMX challenge in the world. It was going to take a miracle… and by miracle, I mean, bike dancing. Rad, the Lori Loughlin (Full House’s Aunt Becky)vehicle turned BMX cult classic features one of the most exhilarating and infamous 7:43 minutes of freestyle High School bike dance scenes on film…and maybe the only.

Home movies about families and lost love, these range from melancholic to marshmallow sweet.

What is it about home movie footage that feels so bittersweet? Home movies, while often funny, make us think about those we’ve lost in our lives, and the decisions we’ve made. These films range from deeply personal stories of failed or transformed love, to hilarious perspectives from different generations.

KELSEY BROOKES: SURF POP ART

Posted in top story

Kelsey Brookes is an upcoming artist, gaining a lot of attention in the pop art community and California surf scene. While his work exhibits a strong and creative interplay with figure, abstract forms, text and design, his background is not in art at all, but biochemistry. After working as a biochemist, he abandoned the science because“ I thought I was going to be there for a few months to make some money and get out of there. Four years later I was left wondering if I had become what I always despised – the funny guy at the water cooler, except not so funny. I was the confused, not so funny guy at the water cooler.” Seems Brookes made the right career move, and you can now see his work in a slew of publications like GQ, Paper, Nylon, Juxtapoz, Beautiful Decay, Dazed and Confused and Huck. He has also collaborated on illustration work for RVCA, Vans and Insight 51. Check out some more of Discosalt’s favorites from Brookes portfolio below:

GREAT MOMENTS IN MUSTACHE MUSIC HISTORY: 1979: BLOW AWAY

Posted in top story

With Mustache March sadly coming to a close, we want to thank all our mustachioed readers this month. We’d also like to leave you all with some positive mustache music vibes and another great moment in mustache music history – to leave a smile on your face, even if it’s hidden beneath some hair.

1979: George Harrison resurfaces from a three-year beard stint with the eponymous album release George Harrison. Sporting a very handsome classic chevron and feathered bangs, Harrison spreads an infectious, positive, up-tempo, stache-pop vibe into the disco wasteland of the late 1970s. He also provides a glimmer of light in dark times: a hostage crisis in Tehran, oil hitting $24 a barrel, Three Mile Island, the untimely death of Sid Vicious’, a gratuitous YMCA libel suit against the Village People, and Chic’s “Le Freak” going #1 on Cashbox. Enough was enough.  The world was in convulsions from, not one, but several sucker punches to its proverbial balls.

But the winds of stache-pop are about to blow away those dark clouds. The appearance of George Harrison’s philtrum-warmer – “the yang to [his] yin” – signals a change as well as a celebratory period of domestic happiness for the quiet Beatle – a time of integral vision, peace, jhana, or kwanthat often accompanies the liberation of face and body consciousness. Ten years later, the same fur pelt that saved the Beatles from disbanding in ’69, saves George from a period of personal strife: his album peaks at number 14 on U.S. billboard charts and goes gold with “Blow Away,” which many have interpreted as a lyrical love letter to his own crumb-catcher. George’s message in this ballad is simple: “all I’ve got to do is to, to love you. All I’ve got to be is, be happy.” In fact, the wisdom proffered in these lines is a recurring theme in George’s personal and professional life of the 1970s, as he explores eastern religions in his quest for personal contentment.

“Blow Away” becomes one of George’s most popular solo-stache career hits, solidifying the mouth mane as the true path to success. The simplistic, styled video is pioneering in mustache music videos, introducing the super-imposed, mirror-image profile mustache shot. At the end of the original Concert for Bangladesh vinyl, George sneaks in a subliminal message that, to this day, has yet to be deciphered. It is rumored to be a nod to the Beatles – perhaps some Krishna wisdom. There is, however, a strong case to be made that George’s cryptic message has always been the same:

Mustache consciousness is not something imposed on the mind. On the contrary, it’s already inside of each of us, waiting to come out, like fire in a match. Growing a mustache brings out that natural, pure state of mind. We’ll become happy, and our lives will become sublime. Wherever there is mustache, there will be everlasting prosperity, victory, happiness, and morality.

Discosalt could not agree more. Until next year, champange wishes and mustache dreams!
