Two expatriate Iranian comic book artists, who have concealed their identities, have reworked Marjane Satrapi’s award winning graphic novel “Persepolis” to reflect the recent election controversies in their home country. The original “Persepolis” which has since been made into an Oscar nominated animated film, is a black comedy based on the authors early life in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. Persepolis 2.0: Hopes and Fears Revealed, created with the original authors blessing, is a 10 page story using some new images plus images from the original book but reshuffled in a way to depict the mass protests in Tehran following the June 12 election. “It’s already a lot to inform people a little bit. Our work can only have a tiny impact. It would take billions for it to change things,” said the writer, who has denounced Ahmadinejad’s re-election as a coup d’etat. In both the end of the original and the new Persepolis, whether it’s 2009 or 1979, the main character, like all of us, still lies in bed at night dreaming of a better future.
