Last year, Future Cinema in association with Warp Films presented a documentary film called All Tomorrow’s Parties, directed by All Tomorrow’s People and Jonathan Caouette. The film documents the history of the long running All Tomorrow’s Parties Music Festival, which is often described as a “post-punk DIY bricolage.” The film was created by both fans and musicians who attended the festivals, with  Super8, camcorders and even mobile phones.  There are some great performances from Grizzly Bear, Sonic Youth, Battles, Belle and Sebastian, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Les Savy Fav, Fuck Buttons, Iggy Pop, and the list goes on and on. GIRLS IN BIKINIS!…OH, AND MAYER HAWTHORNE: NEW VIDEO FOR “YOUR EASY LOVIN AINT PLEASIN NOTHIN”

Haven’t heard of eclectic Motown crooner Mayer Hawthorne yet? Well, you might remember him after watching his new video for “Your Easy Lovin’ Ain’t Pleasin’ Nothin'”. When I watched this the first time, I didn’t even realize I had my speakers off.  But it doesn’t really matter. He could sound like Justin Bieber, and I’ll keep watching, so long as he keeps making videos with these girls in bikinis.  This is sort of what goes on in my head on Friday afternoons…ok every afternoon, but now I can at least share it with other people.  Except, I’m not sure what this guy in the suit is doing here?  Respect to directors Jackson Perry & Henry DeMaio.

UPCOMING INDIE DOCUMENTARY: WELCOME TO DAYTROTTER

Posted in discosalt

MFR (minneapolis fucking rocks) turned us onto this trailer for Welcome to Daytrotter, a feature documentary about the music blog / studio daytrotter.com.

“This film is the story of a small group of people and a singular idea: To build a website and recording studio right where they were, in Rock Island, IL, and invite bands to stop in to record a session. Over the last four years, more than 1,000 bands have passed through that little studio and recorded four songs to be given away free online, from then-emerging artists like Vampire Weekend and Blitzen Trapper, to veterans like Death Cab for Cutie and Kris Kristoffersen.”(daytrotter)

This is a real passion project that is still in the production phase and is being funded entirely out of pocket, so help get the word out and  Donate here.

WES ANDERSON’S SHORT FILM: HOTEL CHEVALIER

Posted in discosalt

So, we realize that it’s been more than a minute since Wes Anderson’s The Darjeeling Limited was released in theaters, but we came across the 13 minute film prequal Hotel Chevalier this week on vimeo and were reminded how entertaining it is…also, we were reminded that Natalie Portman bears more than her acting chops in it. Meow. If you haven’t seen the short in a while, or yet,  you can watch it in it’s entirety below, again…or for the first time. The entire short was shot in one hotel room in Paris where Jason Schwartzman’s character Jack Whitman and his x-girlfriend Natalie Portman break up in Wes’ signature style to Peter Sarstedt’s 1969 hit, “Where Do You Go My Lovely?”. The scene sets the tone and fills in some of the back story for Schwartzman’s character before he joins his older brothers on his spiritual journey to India in Darjeeling. Since we are rapping about movies, anyone seen this movie the Star Wars? Just caught it and I think it’s going to be huge too.

FILM SCREENING FROM BRAZILIAN DIRECTOR SERGIO BIANCHI: THE TENENTS (DON’T LIKE IT, LEAVE)

Posted in discosalt

No plans for tomorrow night? July 24th, at 8 pm, why not head over to the MOMA to check out a film screening of  the 9 minute Short The Island from Brazillian director Alê Camargo, followed by the full length picture The Tenants(Don’t Like it, Leave) from edgey Brazilian director Sergio Bianchi, starring Fernando Alves Pinto, Zezeh Barbosa and Caio Blat.

Bianchi’s richly detailed excavation of society’s fear of and fascination with violence—from television’s constant stream of near pornographic mayhem to venomous suspicion between neighbors, petty feuds within married couples, and quarreling among children—is an indictment of the lowest human impulses. In Portuguese; English subtitles. 103 min. (moma)

AUTUMN DE WILDE SHORT: LES ENFANTS S’ENNUIENT LE DIMANCHE ( THE CHILDREN ARE BORED ON SUNDAYS) WITH ELIJAH WOOD AND SHIRLEY MANSON

Posted in discosalt

Ever since the Apples in Stereo video for “Dance Floor”, Elijah Wood keeps sneaking turning up wherever I look.  Like when I am trying to buy new eyeglasses online or sometimes when I close my eyes at night, his beady hobbit eyes haunt my dreams . Is that weird? Well, most recently, Froto and sexy ginger starlet, Shirley Manson joined photographer and director Autumn De Wilde, to shoot a short film for Oliver Peoples 2010 campaign called  “les enfants s’ennuient le dimanche (the children are bored on sundays)”.  Lord of the Rings meets Garbage but with retro-inspired  sunglasses, 1960’s “Mad Men” flair and a pretentiously long french title. Can’t picture it, just watch. Actually, Wood is pretty entertaining here and he gets to make out with Shirley Manson. He should always play Fred.

If this video has a bit of an indie music video feel to it, that’s probably because Autumn has been working with musicians for most of her career. She  is most known for her portraits of Sonic Youth, Wolfmother, Willie Nelson and Ryan Adams, which have graced the pages of Spin magazine, Rolling Stone, Filter and Nylon. She has also photographed CD covers for Elliot Smith, Jenny Lewis, The Raconteurs, The White Stripes, Beck and  Wilco, directed music videos for Elliot Smith, Spoon, Rilo Kiley, The Raconteurs and Death Cab and directed three live concert documentaries for the Flaming Lips, Spoon and Arcade Fire.

Last year, Autumn directed another short for Oliver Peoples called  “Catch a Tuesday” featuring another celeb who haunts my dreams (but in a different way) Zooey  Deschanel (call me) , oh and some guy, Matt Costa.  (Jack Johnson label? dreamin’) Watch it below:

IS THIS FILM OKAY?: GIA COPPOLA’S SHORT FILM STARRING JASON SCHWARTZMAN AND KIRSTEN DUNST

Posted in discosalt

So, it’s no Godfather epic here, but Gia Coppola (Francis Ford’s granddaughter, Sophia’s niece) joined the Coppola clan behind the camera to direct a short film with Tracy Antonopoulos back in February called Non Plus One. Its a simple five minute boy meets girl story here to promote Opening Ceremony, set to the song “Is this Sound Okay” by cousin, Jason Schwartzman’s band Coconut Records, which also stars Jason, along side a very cute Kirsten Dunst. Taking cue’s from Goddard, this is sort of a low budget French new wave tribute. Not too much to sink into here, but it does leave us curious as to what Gia and Tracy will churn out next.

Tracy has some other work on vimeo including aother boy meets girl story called “The Corner” starring Sara Goldstein and John Eatherly which you can  also check out below:

THE FILM:
THE APE (APAN) (Jesper Ganslandt | Sweden | 77 min.)
Rooftop and the Swedish Film Institute partner to present The Ape, an intense and riveting psychological thriller from one of Europe’s most daring new filmmakers. To convey a sense of perpetual disorientation, director Jesper Ganslandt used an unconventional method: the lead actor, Olle Sarri, was never allowed to read the script. Instead he was led to locations and given a set of instructions before the filming of each scene, unaware of the full plot until filming was completed. The result is at turns mesmerizing, disquieting and genuinely harrowing, but never is the film anything less than unique.

To describe the plot of The Ape much further would diminish the extraordinary experience of watching it for the first time. For stretches of the film the audience is unsure of what has unfolded prior, but as the film moves along and the backstory becomes more clear there is still a tantalizing indefinable sense that something is terribly wrong – not just with Sarri’s protagonist, but with the entire world into which we have entered. We are made to feel that we are following-perhaps even chasing – a man who acts without motivation or a sense of self. But as his story continues to move forward, Ganslandt seems to be suggesting that he is not necessarily an exceptionally damaged man, but might instead be all too typical.

THE FILM:
GREETINGS FROM THE WOODS (Mikel Cee Karlsson | Sweden | 75 min.)
Impeccably composed and entrancing from start to finish, Mikel Cee Karlsson’s Greetings from the Woods is a masterful documentary about the town of Varberg, a beautiful little hamlet located deep within the Swedish forest. A former professional skateboarder and now a successful music video director, the filmmaker returned to Varberg to spend three years capturing the lovely charm and the magical and mundane habits of the longtime denizens of his boyhood home. His impressionistic portrait is filled with lovingly captured little moments: an eccentric local dressed as a Viking shops at a local strip mall; a tiny dog faces off against a herd of curious cattle; a seemingly endless parade of mopeds shoot down the road; a local photographer wanders through fairgrounds and local parks, capturing thousands of snapshots of the locals. Even the routine household rituals of Karlsson’s parents–his father playing with the cat and salting slugs in the yard, his mother vacuuming the house and falling asleep in the living room–are assembled to create a delicate, intimate, yet exhilaratingly engaging ballet of motion and stillness.

Since departing hometown years ago, Karlsson has achieved a great deal of success shooting and directing videos for many of Scandinavia’s biggest stars – most notably Fever Ray. His videos show a keen eye and inventive imagination, and have won countless awards across Europe. Nonetheless, Greetings From the Woods shows a breadth of vision and a dedication to the art of verite documentary filmmaking that signals a great leap forward for Karlsson.

One unforgettable montage starts in the waiting area of a maternity ward, with an expectant mother sitting, listening patiently–but with an unmistakable look of concern–as she listens to the almost comically pained wailing of another mother giving birth down the hall. We enter the delivery room to see the moment of birth, and the tormented cries of the mother suddenly give way to the quiet–but unmistakably messy–beauty of the mother holding her newborn in her arms for the first time; the infant is still fresh, wet and purple from the womb. A moment later the child is washed and dried by a nurse, and his screams mirror the panic his mother felt just moments earlier. Next we see the swaddled baby in his mother’s arms, sleeping peacefully, as his grandfather looks over them with a smile on his face that is at once childlike, gleeful, and serene. This sequence segues into old archival super 8 footage of the town from long ago: runners race off into the hills at a local marathon, a farmer doffs his cap, an elk stares into the camera, a sunflower towers over us, two stories in the air. The sequence ends as we discover that the footage was shot by the local photographer, and we seem him sitting in his dark living room watching these childhood home movies on an old projector. Stretched across his face is a smile that is at once childlike, gleeful, and serene.

Sequences such as these make Greetings much more than a series of beautiful images or a sentimental homage to a town. Karlsson’s film captures the distinctly Swedish character of the people of Varberg, while simultaneously communicating subtly transcendent truths about love, life, humanity, nature, and, most of all, the passage of time. Karlsson’s inspired eye behind the camera and subtly clever touch as an editor are given a perfect showcase in this extraordinary film, and Greetings From the Woods signals the emergence of a unique new talent in world cinema.

SHREDDING GUITAR AND RIPPING ASS: MONOTONIX KICKS OFF SIREN FESTIVAL

Monotonix, the bare bones (and ass) garage-rockers out of Tel Aviv, Israel played a rowdy set at the Siren Music Festival kickoff party on Friday night, once again saying yes! to crack. In case you missed it, our friends at Backseatsandbar were there to document the spectacle. With a drum set rigged up right in the middle of the crowd, wielding mic in ass, animal like front man and international butt beat maker extraordinaire Ami Shalev tore into his set and a sea of sweat soaked bodies, shredding guitar and ripping farts. Check out the video below, completely shot and edited with an iPhone 4. Is that a garbage can on the drummers head? You bet.

Oh no, wait, sorry, wrong vid. The real one is below:

THROUGH THE PAST, DARKLY: WILLIAMSBURG, CIRCA 1980’S

Posted in discosalt

If you spend any time in Billyburg, you may, like me, ask yourself “what year is this?”. Take a walk down Bedford and avoid a pair of over-sized fake glasses, neon shades, ripped t’s or leggings circa the 80’s and you’ll find it’s easier to sneeze with your eyes open. At the Jelly pool party on Sunday, I saw a shirtless man-child, wearing a pair of aggressively loud spandex tights and capezios, that would make David Lee Roth weep; whether in tears of joy or misgiving, I’m not sure. And if you check out a show in Brooklyn, there’s is a solid chance the band you are seeing will throw a nod to an 80’s post punk or new wave hero. But is the Burg really regressing? You might want to check out this photos we came across this week at Free Williamsburg: the Williamsburg Bridge Bike lane back in the 1980’s, which looks more like a scouting locale from The Warriors.  More New York through the past, darkly to come….

Posted in discosalt, New Art

This Wednesday, July 21 at 6PM, Cuchifritos gallery and project space is pleased to present an artists talk followed by Q & A with renowned artist Susan Stockwell who will discuss her recent projects in China, Taiwan and the US. Susan will touch upon her experiences of creating large scale installations made with recycled materials. She will also talk about the management of these projects, her collaborations with industry, how they see their role and how this varies in different countries.

Susan Stockwell lives and work in London, England. She exhibits in galleries and museums all over the world, including the V&A, London, The Neuberger Museum, New York and The National Museum of China, Beijing. She has taught extensively and taken part in residencies and projects in Europe, America and Asia. She was trained at Sheffield University and the Royal College of Art in London. Susan Stockwell’s work takes many forms from small intricate studies to large-scale installations, sculpture, drawings and collage. She is concerned with issues of ecology, geo-politics, mapping, trade and global commerce.
