THROUGH THE PAST, DARKLY: WILLIAMSBURG, CIRCA 1980’S

If you spend any time in Billyburg, you may, like me, ask yourself “what year is this?”. Take a walk down Bedford and avoid a pair of over-sized fake glasses, neon shades, ripped t’s or leggings circa the 80’s and you’ll find it’s easier to sneeze with your eyes open. At the Jelly pool party on Sunday, I saw a shirtless man-child, wearing a pair of aggressively loud spandex tights and capezios, that would make David Lee Roth weep; whether in tears of joy or misgiving, I’m not sure. And if you check out a show in Brooklyn, there’s is a solid chance the band you are seeing will throw a nod to an 80’s post punk or new wave hero. But is the Burg really regressing? You might want to check out this photos we came across this week at Free Williamsburg: the Williamsburg Bridge Bike lane back in the 1980’s, which looks more like a scouting locale from The Warriors.Β  More New York through the past, darkly to come….
