The new video from Broken Social Scene for “Forced to Love”employs some cutting edge 3D rendering and looks really unique. It was directed by MAKAPOON (Adam Makarenko & Alan Poon) and produced by Geoff McLean (Vision Entertainment).
“It’s an experimental 3D scanning technology that detects the displacement of a grid pattern of any object in front of it,” Poon explains.
“The data is then used to rebuild the object in three dimensions. Each band member’s performance was scanned using this technique and manipulated in the computer to create the effect you see in the final video.”

FREE MP3: SOFT LANDING SET TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM THIS FALL
Soft Landing, the trio comprising Beirut’s Paul Collins & Perrin Cloutier, along with Mike Lawless, are self-described as “a bunch of Jorge Ben wannabees” and are releasing their first album this October. Soft Landing began as a recording project by Paul Collins. Between finishing school and touring the world with Beirut, he never really had time to focus on his project. After a month long tour in Brazil, Beirut took a break. It was then that he grabbed Perrin Cloutier (Beirut) and Michael Lawless (Paul’s college friend). Soft Landing, the band, was born. Knowing that free time like this never lasts, the band would practice almost everyday. In January, they drove out to Chicago, and recorded their debut record with Griffin Rodriguez (Icy Demons). The record is currently being mixed, and will be out soon. All of Paul’s songs seem to pull together multiple influences. From Jorge Ben to Arthur Russell, it’s all in there. The beats are huge, the electric guitar is liquid, and the acoustic relentlessly propels the rhythm. Yet, the bands ultimate goal is to make honest music that suits the players playing it.

Sean Moore, best known for his work with Florida dream-pop duo Viernes, has released a lazy summer, late Beach Boys sounding solo chamber-pop cover of “I’ve Begun to Fall in Love”, originally recorded by R. Stevie Moore (no relation). The song is featured on an album you can download called Sick of the Radio, an R. Stevie Moore tribute series that will also feature tracks from Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti. Don’t hurt yourself on this album art.

This morning, musical collective N.A.S.A. (North America/South America) led by DJ and remixer Squeak E. Clean and Brazilian cutting edge DJ/pro-skateboarder DJ Zegon dropped a new video for “Strange Enough” feat. Ol’ Dirty Bastard (RIP), Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), and Fat Lip (Pharcyde). The video features all original artwork by Calma (aka Stephan Doitschinoff), was produced by Terence Teh and directed by Lorna T & Studio Giblets. Squeak E. Clean (aka Sam Spiegel) says:
“Calma, Terence and Lorna blew our mind with this new video. It’s a Dante’s Inferno of Brazilian art which fits the song perfectly.”
The duo recently released new album The Big Bang (Spectrophonic Sound/DashGo), which features two new tracks and dance floor interpretations of select songs from The Spirit of Apollo–their 2009 debut. After a long hiatus, Interpol is back with a beautiful and disturbing new video for “Lights”,which the band is currently distributing virally. The carefully choreographed video, directed by Charlie White, plays with timing, construction of movements and some really interesting editing to serve up a brilliantly themed video that leaves quite a bit open to interpretation. Deep within the chamber of the three horned rhinoceros beetle, a closely guarded pheromone harvesting ritual is about to begin. A poor creature is lured to the light by some sexily body painted women, where she is groomed, injected and in her excitement she produces a milky drug that the other creatures want and need. But in the awkwardly abrupt ending, she seems to be disregarded as the others have no need for her. Or maybe as the songs lyrics suggest, the girl has just become lost to the darkness, part of a dark feeding cycle of pleasure addiction.

FREE MP3: THE CINNAMON BAND: I’M ASKING YOU
Songwriter/guitarist John Harouff and Drummer Neil Campbell are the two heavy-hitting henchmen behind The Cinnamon Band who make one hell of a first impression. Growing up in Staunton, VA and playing in bands together since age twelve, the two first won attention as high school students comprising two-thirds of the shapeshifting noise-pop act The Union of a Man and a Woman, including from Darius Van Arman who signed the group to Jagjauar. Fast forward to 2010, we find the duo have expanded and matured their music pallet, trading angular riffs and odd time signatures for hummable melodies and aural clarity. The Cinnamon Bands is a vehicle that allows Harouff’s refined song crafting to really shine, showcasing his knack for creating succinct pop songs in a rock band context. “It’s the most honest combination of things that we’ve done- for years, we played loud, bombastic ‘experimental’ music and I liked that,” says Harouff. “But I’ve always loved ‘pretty’ music, and was never able to make it myself. Suddenly I started combining the two ends of that spectrum, which isn’t unusual- they work together.”
Harouff’s warm and resonant vocals have often been compared to Bruce Springsteen while the band’s powerful sound, thanks largely to Campbell’s ferocious drumming, have merited a wide range of comparisons from U2 to Mogwai to Wilco. And like Wilco or say, The Walkmen or Band of Horses, The Cinnamon Band mixes up progressive leaning indie rock on one hand with classic arena rock and even country on the other.
After opening for Sub Pop duo Handsome Furs at a local show, they once again made a strong and lasting impression, this time with the Fur’s Dan Boekner (also of Wolf Parade), who invited the band out on a 30 date tour across States. But the good fortune and Canadian hospitality did not end with the tour, as they were then invited up to record at Wolf Parade’s studio Mt. Zoomer in Montreal with Wolf Parade’s Arlen Thompson. The stunning result of the session is their debut EP All Dressed – four tight songs of close harmony vocals and incredibly catchy melody.

Sophomore releases. They used to be a daunting obstacle for a band to overcome. Living up to the first impressions you left on your listeners ears and catching up with all the music that came out during the time that you “took off.” That is unless you are Philadelphia’s Jukebox the Ghost. Armed with their new record Everything Under the Sun produced by Peter Katis (Interpol, The National, Fanfarlo) and set for release on September 7th via Yep Roc the band combines their adept skills as individual musicians, tirelessly energetic live sets and pulsating catchy lyrics. The record’s debut track, “Empire” is best described by vocalist/keyboardist Ben Thornwell as: “ …an extended metaphor of the heart as a castle, A keep is defined as ‘The Stronghold of a Castle’ thus, ‘My heart, is my keep and you are threatening me.’ And the truth is that an empire, as is love, is hard to keep peaceful.“
Since their 2008 debut, Let Live and Let Ghosts, which SPIN called, “a refreshing reminder that the lighthearted electricity of a fantastic pop song is still filled with live wires,” the band has kept themselves busy. After playing over 300 shows with the likes of Ben Folds, Adam Green and Ra Ra Riot the band, which is made up of vocalist/pianist Ben Thornewill, vocalist/guitarist Tommy Siegel and drummer Jesse Kristin spent countless hours constructing and arranging songs until they reached their full potential. Whether they were touring, rehearsing in basements, houses, hotel rooms or hanging out in the studio the creative process never stopped, making Everything Under the Sun a record that not only showcases this band’s songwriting prowess but also their infectious energy.

Think of Niia as Sade meets Portishead, a mix of of the classical old updated through the use of minimalist down-tempo synth pop, murder guitar and joy divisionesque drums. It makes for a combination that has never failed to impress. Looking like Giselle, Niia’s not exactly hard on the eyes either. Niia garnered a lot of attention early on after meeting Wyclef and appearing on his track “Sweest Girl (Dollar Bill)” which spent several weeks on the Billboard charts. From there, Perez Hilton went on to say she had a “voice as sultry as she looks” for her cover of the Cher classic “Bang Bang”. You’ll hear mostly covers on her MySpace page, but trust me when I say it’s her originals that are going to really draw you to her and you’ll be singing Libertine Hero to yourself for days on end. In the meantime, give “Last Man” a listen below.

Cool Runnings, the band out of Knoxville, not the Doug E. Doug vehicle, is the brainchild of Brandon Biondo (Royal Bangs) and Forrest Ferguson: a collaborative project between two front men that benefits from the creative contributions of all eight members of the band. On their new EP, Babes Forever, they drop their southern roots and bring a real west coast vibe with some “tasteful” California alt-nudity cover art. Clinching the lead for best album art of the summer.

DANGERMOUSE, SPARKLEHORSE AND DAVID LYNCH: DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL
Dark Night of the Soul, the treatise written by Spanish poet and Roman Catholic Mystic Saint John of the Cross has become an expression used to describe a phase in a person’s spiritual life, a metaphor for a certain loneliness and desolation. The other “Dark Night of the Soul”, the mysterious multi-media project/album involving Danger Mouse , Mark Linkous , and David Lynch has proven just as cryptic. While the unreleased album featuring Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse, the Flaming Lips, Iggy Pop, Frank Black, Julian Casablancas, Jason Lytle, and James Mercer of the Shins, remains on “indefinite hiatus” after a dispute with the record label EMI, the book is available for sale on new interactive website for Dark Night of the Soul along with a blank CD. Its a shame because it’s a great album that everyone should hear. Luckily, it has made its way onto the webs, youtube and some select record shops in New York if you can find it. Discosalt Video of the Week 20/6/10: Aussie buzz band Tame Impala have released a new stoner friendly video for “Why don’t you make up your mind” off Innerspeaker, out this month. Taking a slightly different visual cue from the cinematic “Solitude is Bliss” video, which featured a post-apocalyptic anti-dog world, the trio perform their warm psychedelic hypno-groove melodic rock in a field of grass, which clearly the band is familiar with.
