ALBUM STREAM: TWIN SHADOW: FORGET

Moody Morrissey-esc crooner George Lewis Jr., aka Twin Shadow may be skirting familiar musical territory on his debut album Forget, produced by Chris Taylor (Grizzly Bear). But while the nostalgic Brooklyn project strikes some comfortable chords your feet already know how to dance to, he masters the lush romantic 1980’s new wave synth landscape in a way that seems fresh and heartfelt. So if you are tired of spinning your Echo and the Bunnymen records and looking for some new fall sounds to soothe a broken heart, stream the new Twin Shadow album right here or download a free mp3 of standout track “Slow” below.

“Like the Wheel,” along with four other new songs, make up Sometimes The Blues is Just a Passing Bird, an EP written entirely after The Wild Hunt. ALBUM STREAM: SUCKERS: WILD SMILE

FREE MP3: THE WAR ON DRUGS: COMIN’ THROUGH

The War On Drugs debut release Wagonwheel Blues landed in our laps like a shimmering plate of all that is good in the world of American rock ‘n’ roll. We weren’t the only ones either as the album provoked words like “stunning,” “inspiring,” and “sublime” from Rolling Stone, Fader, Spin and more. Looking again at that space between the horizons, The War On Drugs makes another forecast, October 26 they bring you Future Weather. This album finds The War On Drugs once again at the blurred edges of American music: overexposing studio limitations, piling tape upon tape to maximum density, and then — with each song — they pull off the scaffolding to reveal what sticks, keeping only what’s absolutely necessary and dig into what sounds like the best kind of fucked up. As on their debut, Wagonwheel Blues, they take small moments occurring over multiple tapes and multiple song versions, and put every last drop of trust in their own instinct of momentum.
Future Weather is a provocative — sometimes playful, sometimes weighty — glimpse into The War On Drugs’ song-sculpting process, a process that remains a big mystery even to those on the inside. While some bands are content to merely pace the abyss, The War On Drugs coast through it.  And along the way, Future Weather sidesteps most every connotation associated with the EP format. There’s a true coalescence and symmetry here, one of wash and drone, of momentum and tone, but also of theme. Friendship, loyalty and keeping a group of spiritual brothers together are all themes that songwriter Adam Granduciel focuses in on for Future Weather. “Wondering where my friends are going / Wondering why they didn’t take me / Looking out the window of my room / Looking out where something once ran wild,” he sings on “Brothers” with a sense of soured peace, leaving out all the right things, leaving room in there for the shared experiences of your own friends. There are cues taken from our best American songwriters, yet The War On Drugs are wise enough to also implode or send themselves into outer space when the moment calls for it. The driving organ riff  that pushes “Baby Missiles” may be inspired by a fever dream of Springsteen or Dire Straits more than any particular jam. And the endless layers of guitar melody and atmospherics of “Comin’ Through,” rather than add weight to the vessel, only work to fill its sails with warmer and warmer winds. Future Weather will be available in stores October 26 (TBD in the UK). In the meantime, check out the first single “Comin’ Through” below. You can also catch The War On Drugs on tour this fall at select dates in the Eastern U.S. including an appearance at Hopscotch Festival in Raleigh, North Carolina September 9.

FREE MP3: COMMON GRACKLE: THE GREAT DEPRESSION

Welcome to the world of Common Grackle, the collaboration of two Canadian musical wiz kids – indie pop songwriter and mad-cap illustrator, Gregory Pepper and Saskatoon psych hip hop producer Factor. The Great Depression is what happens when Factor’s recognizable banging drums get enveloped in Gregory Pepper’s lush harmonies, hilariously cynical lyrics, and gorgeous instrumentation. The Great Depression blurs all sorts of lines and tears down all sorts of genre definitions and definitely requires your time. Think the somber confessionals of Elliott Smith, re-worked by Dangermouse!!

FREE MP3: PIERCED ARROW: THE DOORWAY

Pierced Arrow,  formed from the wreckage of Portland Oregon’s Dead Moon, an underground cult garage rock band from 1987 to 2006, embody a fiercely independent DIY ethos and rock and roll spirit that is unmatched by most musicians today. Band mates Fred Cole and real life sweetheart of 42 years, Toody stubbornly record everything in mono, press their own albums on vintage equipment and live out in the woods in a mansion they build for themselves.  Six grandkids later, they still play raw, ragged  straightforward rock ‘n’ roll, garage punk that comes from a musical culture spanning 30 years and sounds relevant despite the bands youngest member being 39. These guys are no joke.

The band has announced an upcoming North American tour that begins September 30 at legendary club 7th St. Entry in Minneapolis, MN.The ex-Dead Moon veterans will play 21 dates across the US before closing out the tour in Weed, CA on October 23rd.

The jaunt comes in the wake of Pierced Arrows’ recent split 7″ with label mates Black Lips, released in July via Scion A/V. In keeping with the other releases in the Vice-curated Scion Garage 7″ series, both bands debuted new songs on the single. Pierced Arrows’ offering, “The Doorway”, is a keen demonstration of the raw, unbridled rock that collaborators Fred and Toody Cole have honed over their 30+ year career. Scion A/V also recently released the band’s first proper music video for “This is the Day” from their most recent full length Descending Shadows.

FREE MP3: DOES IT OFFEND YOU YEAH?: WE ARE THE DEAD

Here’s a brand new shiny track and video from Does It Offend You, Yeah? titled We Are The Dead. The band tells us they have been writing their new album for nearly two years, while trying to fit in a tour. It’s been one big rollercoaster ride for the band with ups and downs (as well as lefts and rights) and the album has been through more re-writes than the “Ghostbusters 3” script. They are making some serious headway though and are in the final process of putting this beast to bed. As a treat to the fans who’ve supported them at clubs and festivals all over the world they are offering a free track + remix parts. (Just don’t tell their label). Pretty rad. Download it below:

FREE MP3: SMALL BLACK: PHOTOJOURNALIST

Brooklyn based band Small Black has a new single out from their first full length album New Chain, which officially hits your eardrums on October 26th. The single “Photojournalist” begins with a lilting sliding beat before dropping into a gorgeous moment of ambient wash. As the lyrics kick in with lead singer Josh Kolenik repeating the refrain “rise up again, like a ghost” the song does just that, growing more concrete in form as Josh’s vocals strengthen, are supported by a chorus, and drums come up in the mix. Layers are added until the song hits maximum velocity only to disappear even quicker than it began. Small Black are feverishly working to make sure your fall is full of surprises. Stay tuned for new songs, remixes, videos and more as well as fall tour dates including an appearance at the CMJ Music Festival in October. FREE MP3: HURRAY FOR THE RIFF RAFF: SLOW WALK

Hurray For The Riff Raff are a New Orleans based, three piece indie-folk/blues rock band. The band started when a teenaged Alynda Lee Segarra began hopping trains, traveling across the country while learning to play banjo. Eventually she settled in New Orleans, and allowed music to take hold of her life. She quickly embraced the city’s community of street musicians, who encouraged her to develop her banjo skills and sing old jazz songs. She was soon performing with traditional jazz bands on the sidewalks of the French Quarter, playing and singing while learning from the music of the city she loves.

They bring delicate wanderings of old souls and spirits from the past into the wide open spaces of consciousness. They are influenced by the sounds of classic country like Hank Williams Sr, 1960’s Rock n Roll, and master singer/songwriters like Townes Van Zandt and Neil Young.

VIDEO OF THE WEEK: TEEN DAZE: SHINE ON, YOU CRAZY WHITE CAP

Discosalt Video of the week 8/15/10: Ultra chilled out Vancouver band Teen Daze are bringing last summers “chillwave” back with their latest video for “Shine On, You Crazy White Cap”. Director ZJ Wong has put together a nostalgic blend of old vacation movies as a fitting backdrop to the bands hazy hypnotic harmonies, bleeding synths and dance conscious pop. FREE MP3: N.A.S.A.: CHASE THE DEVIL (MAX ROMEO AND THE UPSETTERS COVER)

To celebrate their 50th Anniversary Dr. Martens has asked 10 bands to record their version of cult classic tracks that represent the spirit of the brand over the past five decades. N.A.S.A. chose to re-interpret Max Romeo and The Upsetters classic reggae anthem “I Chase the Devil”– a fitting choice for the intergalactic duo.

After hours spent crunching real tape loops and experimenting with the dubbing to get exactly the right “stoned, spacey feel”, the production on the track sparkles. The animated video that accompanies is every inch as virtuoso with humor and imagination in excess. Director Don Letts has broken boundaries left, right and centre in his film work and this video continues that spirit of exploration with extra-powerful visuals.

Leland Sundries is the mostly solo project of New York based Nick Loss-Eaton. He is re-branding Nashville’s original blues Americana with a touch of indie rock sarcasm.

Although he isn’t the first person to use a resonator guitar (see “Bon Iver”), it is a refreshing sound in a landscape of bands utilizing the same 3 piece set over and over. Leland Sundries has also been known to use a 2 string Cigar Box Guitar made in Memphis, giving his New York audiences the chance to experience something that few city kids even realize exists. Loss-Eaton also uses a megaphone-harmonica set up which captures the vintage-recording-scratchy echo that defines the original Americana sound for modern audiences.

For me, the cigar box was a sound that I had heard many times, but could never actually identify. Played with some hefty slide and nice backing guitars by Dan Kaplan, the Cigar Box was definitely my favorite surprise at the show. The stand out Leland Sundries song was “Giving Up Redheads” which according to insider,s might just be Loss-Eaton’s favorite kind of lady. Touching on the classical theme of love-lost man, Leland Sundries takes the twang-y Americana sound and infuses it with a little bit of classic rock styling and extra energy.

Leland Sundries plays both solo and with Dan Kaplan’s back up guitar. I liked a little bit of back up guitar and vocals to both support and define Loss-Eaton’s intended sound. I also saw some of Dan Kaplan’s solo set (with some nice backing by Mr. Nick Loss-Eaton) and was struck by the charming quality to Kaplan’s voice. His acoustic guitar and sweet vocals are certainly a crowd pleaser.

Although I only stayed for a few songs, I felt there was real potential for a bigger collaboration between Loss-Eaton and Kaplan. They have very different sounds and very different strengths. I want some banjo/cigar box twang with Kaplan’s soft strumming and delicate vocals. I want some deep spoken word growls from Loss-Eaton on top of the soft strumming and delicate voice of Kaplan. There is a juxtaposition there that I think could be explored.

Leland Sundries is playing in October, but there are whispers of shows upcoming in the next few weeks, if we hear anything.
