FREE MP3: DVAS: CONSENTING ADULTS + QUESTIONS

Toronto’s DVAS recently popped up on our radar. Their synth heavy album Society already hit #1 on the Canadian College Radio RPM Chart and VAS recently inked a deal with Toronto’s Upper Class Recordings to relaease the album in the US on November 16th.   DVAS are known and loved for their funky synth-based dance floor jams  and do not disappoint with their full-length debut.

Enjoy: Dvas – Consenting Adults

Download: Dvas – Questions

On “Society,” the lead single from Toronto dance revivalists DVAS’s album Society(Upper Class Recordings, November 16), singer Jered Stuffco sings, “Isn’t it nice to break free from the VIPs tonight.” “Society”’s synthesizer and slap bass could easily have been lifted off Marcia Griffith’s “Electric Boogie” (that’s the “Electric Slide” song from those middle school dances). But DVAS also comes off like a modern group, something akin to Cut Copy, with less grittiness. There’s a Cut Copy-esque crunch on “Consenting Adults” and midway through the instrumental “Inner Sanctum” the entire mix is sent through a harsh, Daft Punk-like compression. Elsewhere on Society, DVAS are shameless purveyors of yacht rock and ’90s adult-contemporary, at once jokey and quite serious. That irony may be lost on Stuffco, who recently mouthed off to AOL’s Spinner with his thoughts on hipster culture. But if DVAS just let the music speak for itself, they may find that Chromeo sweet spot of irony and awesome that they’re reaching for.

FREE MP3: ACRYLICS: NIGHTWATCH

Download the first new track “Nightwatch” from NYC indie pop band Acrylics‘ forthcoming LP Lives and Treasure below. Acrylics conjure a real crystallized 70’s  pop infused sound (think Linda Ronstadt/Fleetwood Mac), formed around songwriters Molly Shea and Jason Klauber‘s vocal combo and layered in between some gentle synths and  sweet lap slide guitar. NEW VIDEO FROM THE TALLEST MAN ON EARTH: LOVE IS ALL

The new video for “Love is All” (from the album The Wild Hunt), features vintage Super 8 footage compiled by director Johan Stolpe. So often The Tallest Man on Earth’s music is said to be informed by the American landscape, but to watch the video for “Love is All” is to look deeply into those preconceptions and have the images display another side of Kristian Matsson’s origin.

The new five-song EP by The Tallest Man on Earth, Sometimes the Blues Is Just a Passing Bird, will be available at all digital and retail outlets this coming Tuesday, November 9th, in North America (8th in the UK). You can download the single “Like the Wheel” here.

YEASAYER REMIX FROM HERMANOS INGLESOS

Hermanos Inglesos have sent over a little post Halloween treat for you. They’ve remixed one of my favourite Yeasayer songs ‘Madder Red’. It has all the greatness of the original with the added bonus the Hermanos Inglesos injection of fun. There are a few noises in there that wouldn’t sound out of place on Rip it Up and Start Again by Orange Juice. That might seem like a bold claim but that’s kind of what it reminded me of. Check it out below:

nihiti: OTHER PEOPLE’S MEMORIES

[rating:4]

nihiti: other people’s memories
Label: lo bit landscapes
Release Date: October 10, 2010

New York based musical duo nihiti is a jazz-infused psychedelic dark pop/electronica band made up of The Surveyor and Dragan. The diverse, at times unclassifiable musical project, is notorious for their mysterious and surreal live performances  intensified by the bands dramatic light shows, which seemingly meld their sound into the visual.

Here are two free downloads from the album:
Download:Return of Kind Rope

Download:Black Cars
On their new album Other People’s Memories, nihiti delivers the same mysterious and surreal element they bring to their live performances but on record; taking listeners on a strange sonic journey between gentle low-fi acoustic valleys reminiscent of Elliot Smith to more extreme sonic peaks of noise more in stride with Fuck Buttons.

The first track vulture mentality sets an apocalyptic tone for the album which at times, almost lends itself more towards a film score.  Imbibed with subtle yet distinct transitions from track to track, its easy to get lost in the dense complicated layers of music that often bounce back and forth between seemingly structure-less noise to insisting percussion, both interlaced my evocative melodic overtones. Throughout the album, lyrics are rarely used as a constant or driving force behind songs, rather, vocals appear scattered here and there, as yet another instrument, often without distinction from other elements.

Tracks like “the return of kind ropes (laku noc, dusan k)” offers up a beautiful combination of keys, strings and clean guitar riffs with a tone of uncertainty. While, “black cars (a sinistra)”  – perhaps my favourite track on the album – is a loopy beat driven vocal-less anthem, heavy on bass shifting the album mood into more electronic terrain.

On the surface, Other People’s Memories is an album seemingly at conflict with itself; trying to find a cosmic balance between digital beats and organic homilies.  But keep the headphones on, turn up the bass and listen deeper. Other People’s Memories challenges listeners to experience emotion through the complex juxtapositions of these dissonant sounds, creating something that is both abstract and profoundly moving out of its own diversity.

We recently posted a write-up on Viktor Timofeev and his collaboration with nihiti. You may recognize the cover art for Other People’s Memories from Viktor’s work. Below is an image of the cover art poster that comes with the purchase of the album:

POMEGRANATES MADE YOU A MIX TAPE

Cincinnati’s Pomegranates started out as a fun project between friends Jacob Merritt and Isaac Karns, but it grew with staggering speed, releasing an EP within just months and signing a record deal soon after. Fast-forward four years to present day, and Pomegranates is now a quartet set to release its third album, One Of Us, on October 26 on Afternoon Records. The band is currently on an extensive U.S. tour in support of the release, but the guys were nice enough to take the time to make MAGNET magazine this mix tape below—and even make an ordered playlist on YouTube for your viewing pleasure, which can be found here.

“50′s” (download):

Rolling Stones “I Am Waiting”
Joey: This is one of the first Stones songs I remember hearing. It has strong nostalgia for me, and the chorus feels so epic and beautiful. Video

T.Rex “20th Century Boy”
Daniel: What’s not to like? There is something about Marc Bolan that is so cool and makes you feel like putting on sunglasses and riding a motorcycle. “I move like a cat/Charge like a ram.” Nothing cooler than that and super-heavy guitars. Video

Sam Amidon “Climbing High Mountains”
Isaac: One of my favorite new artists. He’s prompted me to explore a lot of traditional-folk and spiritual songs. I recently learned to play this song on guitar, too. Video

Harry Nilsson & Shelly Duvall “He Needs Me”
Joey: Every time I’ve seen Popeye, it’s felt really surreal. This song has always felt like a beautiful dream to me. I love the sort of lazy vibe with the gorgeous arrangements, all with Shelly Duvall’s voice. I would probably put this song on every mix if I could. Video

Enlou “Ghost of Peace”
Daniel: These are friends/brothers of ours from Cincinnati, who continue to make exceptional, thought-provoking music. Listening to their new Body Of Water, Body Of Friends EP on repeat and finding new things every time. It was also mixed/mastered by TJ Lipple, who worked on our record, so we are big fans of all aspects of this project. This EP has such a good vibe to it. I cannot stress how important it is that you get this EP. Video

Violet Burning “Undone”
Isaac: I put this album on every night I went to bed for probably more than a year. This is the first track. A beautiful song about being in love, with plenty of spacey guitars. Video

George Harrison “I’d Have You Anytime”
Joey: I’ve been kind of obsessed with this album lately. I particularly love the chord progression and feel of this song. Video

Air “Dead Bodies”
Daniel: This is a frequent “pump-up jam” for me. The build up in the first half always has me bobbing my head and air drumming. The keyboard choir sound always gives me chills, leading to that drum fill. This is a perfect night drive song. Well, Air in general is a good night-drive listen.Video

Larry Norman “UFO”
Isaac: I grew up hearing Larry Norman from my dad playing his records. A pretty song about the end of the world. Video

Ben Burroughs “Fish Out of Water”
Joey: Ben has been a friend of mine for a few years now, and he is one of my favorite songwriters. He’s been a big inspiration for me as far as layering sounds and textures and creating moods. This is just one of 10 amazing songs from his third album, Into The LakeVideo

Pedro The Lion “Indian Summer”
Daniel: This is part of the proof that no matter how happy sounding David Bazan writes a song, he can usually find a way to make it depressing in a sarcastic way. Ha. What I love most is his honesty in songwriting, that I feel like had a big part of how I grew up. Video

Aradhna “Amrit Vani”
Isaac: When I hear this album, I immediately feel at peace and sense the presence of God. This album was also the soundtrack for when I got my most recent tattoo. Video

The Waterboys “This is the Sea”
Isaac: One of the most epic songs I think any of us have ever heard. Video

FREE MP3: THE POISON TREE: COME ON COME ON

The Poison Tree is the new project by The King of France frontman Steve Salett. This record could easily have been found on an old reel of 1/2″ tape buried under a mattress in the Chelsea hotel. With songs that walk comfortably alongside Leonard Cohen, Fred Neil, the The Poison Tree shines new light on the salad days of the singer-songwriter.

Carefully crafted, The Poison Tree‘s songs were developed with the help of a rotating cast of collaborators culled from the Elephant 6 styled Saltlands music collective Salett co-founded, including musicians Thomas Bartlett (Doveman) and Dawn Landes.

FREE MP3: VOLTAIRE TWINS: D.I.L.

2010 is shaping up to be a colorful year for Australian synth-pop duo Voltaire Twins. The brother-sister combo recently caught the eye of French tastemaker label Kitsuné, who released their single D.I.L. (JBAG remix) worldwide on the Kitsuné x Ponystep worldwide release.

With iTunes adding the duo to their Hotly Tipped For 2010 compilation, the pair, who are already regular features in the blogosphere, have exploded in a swarm of internet hype. Having performed at a slew of summer festivals, the duo recently completed their first Australian national tour and are currently busy writing and producing a full-length follow up to their critically acclaimed Cabin Fever EP, released online in June 2010.

Voltaire Twins have supported Ladytron, Maximo Park, Art vs Science and Lost Valentinos on recent tours and have also played on bigger bills with Vampire Weekend, Florence and The Machine, The XX, Peaches, Tegan & Sara, Goldfrapp, Yelle and Metronomy. Onstage, Voltaire Twins sing, dance, hit things and play a range of synths. Along with friend Matt on the drums, the twins create a spectacular scene, bursting with frenzied vigor, rendering audiences everywhere incapable of standing still.

FREE MP3: FuzZ: MARSHMALLOW BAZOOKA

FuzZ , aka David Streit is the first new artist signed to Spectrophonic Sound, the label owned and ran by Squeak E. Clean, music producer and one half of the critically-acclaimed group N.A.S.A. Streit is one third of the LA-based production company, Greenlab Cinema. His new album, Sparkle Vision is a 23- minute collection of delightfully evil, and strangely sparkly music. Meshing distorted funk riffs with 80’s inspired synthesis and heavy psychedelic interludes, Sparkle Vision fuses several musical influences into a cohesive and enjoyable wall of sound. Think Major Lazer on acid.

The good folks over at Urb.com premiered the new single, Marshmallow Bazooka and had this to say: “Up-and-coming electronic producer FuzZ brings multitudes of shimmering darkness.”

FREE MP3: THE WAR ON DRUGS: THE HISTORY OF PLASTIC

In just under two short weeks on October 26 The War On Drugs new EP Future Weather will be available in stores in the U.S. (and early 2011 in the U.K.). However, you can pre-order the album today and you’ll get an instant download of the record. In celebration the band is releasing a second single from Future Weather, the closing track “The History of Plastic.”
Unlike previous Drugs singles— like the lyrically-driven first single from Future Weather “Comin’ Through” —”The History of Plastic” is the quintessential deep cut. Of course, a great single is where a lot of bands are introduced to the world (and the Drugs have plenty of gems to go around), but it is the B-Side, the sixth or seventh track, the tune that clocks in over eight minutes that give bands their flavor, their depth. This is where The War On Drugs are unparralleled— that place where they have all the room in the world to stretch out in a meditative musical exploration.

The War On Drugs’ songwriting process often involves many, many, many versions of an individual song— some long, some short, some with guitar as the focus, others with organ, and still others with that weirded out space echo pushed up in the mix. “The History of Plastic” is a great example of how the band can find— or stumble on— moments of genius through this method. Go find that moment about three-and-a-half minutes in, where lead singer/songwriter Adam Granduciel repeats the line “You put a curse on me, babe.” On the last time through his voice just trails off into the abyss, like it is being pulled by a certain intangible gravity. Moments like these are what takes The War On Drugs’ music to that level of heart-stopping beauty only found on that other side of the record.

LATEST INSTALLMENT IN ONGOING SCION A/V REMIX SERIES: MOBRODER- RUSH (THE REMIXES)

Scion has announced their latest foray into the wide world of remix culture, offering up a free EP by Mobroder, the house music side project of Naeem Hanks, Blu Jemz, and DJ Hoff. On Scion A/V Remix: Mobroder-Rush (The Remixes), they take the track “Rush” and leave it to a slew of creative minds to reinterpret the results.

Nile Delta approaches “Rush” with a particular disco sensibility, filtering the vocals and pushing the synth progression to center stage. The driving cowbell of In Flagranti‘s interpretation sets the pace for a searing take, after which Turbotito presents a wholly different and no less danceable rendition. A pervasive, end-of-days darkness characterizes the Hardy Boyz cataclysmic remix and the collection is rounded out by a Shazam remix of “Love Duet” which features a saucy verse from Amanda Blank.

In its continual effort to show support for the arts, Scion covers all production, licensing and distribution costs for the A/V projects, and all proceeds go directly back to the label and artists involved.

Scion A/V Remix: Mobroder-Rush (The Remixes) is also available for streaming on Scion’s new lifestyle portal, ScionAV.com and via the Scion AV Radio App for the iPhone ®, iPod Touch ®, and iPad ®.

TING TINGS PERFORM HANDS LIVE ON LATER WITH JOOLS HOLLAND

Check out The Ting Tings performing “Hands,” the first single from their upcoming 2011 release, on Later with Jools Holland:

Rolling Stone gave the track 4-stars calling it, “flaming hot new wave,” and Billboard raved about the tracks infectious “chorus that just begs to be chanted en masse.” The single is out now in the UK and will be available this November in the U.S.

In other news, The Ting Tings announced a collaboration with Tommy Hilfiger which the band designed a campaign for their new signature scent LOUD. For more details on the LOUD campaign tune in here: Tommy.com/LOUD

After a whirlwind of touring non-stop for the last two years, The Ting Tings settled in Berlin where they completed their sophomore album in a disused basement jazz club that they turned it into their own studio in East Berlin’s Freidrichshain District. Spending the winter of 2009 with their music equipment, fairy-lights, pens and gaffer tape and with no TV, no visiting friends, no distractions at all, they wrote, recorded and produced their next album which is yet to be titled as the band explained in a post to fans on their Facebook this week.
