SUCKERS: BLACK SHEEP
Brooklyn based synth and percussion quartet, Suckers sound like a mix between Yeasayer and Modest Mouse. Think experimental pop with lots of background harmonies, primal beats and hand claps. Their self-titled EP was actually produced by Yeasayer’s Anand Wilder, and they have a new video out for their single “Black Sheep” that you can check out below. Last week, the band played a sold out show with MGMT at Prospect Park, and you catch them all month long at their Pianos residency on the lower east side.

FREE MP3: JUKEBOX THE GHOST: EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN
Sophomore releases. They used to be a daunting obstacle for a band to overcome. Living up to the first impressions you left on your listeners ears and catching up with all the music that came out during the time that you “took off.” That is unless you are Philadelphia’s Jukebox the Ghost. Armed with their new record Everything Under the Sun produced by Peter Katis (Interpol, The National, Fanfarlo) and set for release on September 7th via Yep Roc the band combines their adept skills as individual musicians, tirelessly energetic live sets and pulsating catchy lyrics. The record’s debut track, “Empire” is best described by vocalist/keyboardist Ben Thornwell as: “ …an extended metaphor of the heart as a castle, A keep is defined as ‘The Stronghold of a Castle’ thus, ‘My heart, is my keep and you are threatening me.’ And the truth is that an empire, as is love, is hard to keep peaceful.“
Since their 2008 debut, Let Live and Let Ghosts, which SPIN called, “a refreshing reminder that the lighthearted electricity of a fantastic pop song is still filled with live wires,” the band has kept themselves busy. After playing over 300 shows with the likes of Ben Folds, Adam Green and Ra Ra Riot the band, which is made up of vocalist/pianist Ben Thornewill, vocalist/guitarist Tommy Siegel and drummer Jesse Kristin spent countless hours constructing and arranging songs until they reached their full potential. Whether they were touring, rehearsing in basements, houses, hotel rooms or hanging out in the studio the creative process never stopped, making Everything Under the Sun a record that not only showcases this band’s songwriting prowess but also their infectious energy.

THE STATIC JACKS: DEFEND ROSIE
Fresh off a string of dates with The Futureheads and We Were Promised Jetpacks, New Jersey’s The Static Jacks return home for a show at Piano’s this Wednesday, June 30th! If you haven’t already seen these guys performing for free in Union Square, you can watch a preview of the band’s trailer for “Defend Rosie” below. The band “blends Interpol’s tense guitar work and driven drum beats with a more “alt-rock” approach mostly traceable in their preference for epic, open melodies.” (The Deli) The Static Jacks are a rare and refreshing act of twenty-somethings with a solid reputation for writing entrancing songs that disregard the latest trends and defy simple labeling. Featuring stomp-clap beats, mesmerizing layers of guitar rhythm and deep sandpaper vocals, The Static Jacks cast off the computer-based trends of modern music makers. Their stripped-down sound resonates influences ranging from 1980s punk to current indie pop music.
RED WIRE BLACK WIRE: ROBOTS AND ROSES
Few bands let you go behind the scenes and see glimpses of their personal lives, especially their lives before the age of at least 17 or so…The beginning images of this intimate and unique video, the latest from Brooklyn-based Red Wire Black Wire features images from the childhood of lead singer Doug Walters and his brother and bandmate Greg. The video for “Roses and Robots” is composed of footage spliced with pieces of the band playing live. Doug explains the inspiration for “Roses and Robots” lyrics for us, “It’s a song describing a dream – so the found footage, old family footage, and current footage of the band evokes the surreal nostalgia of dreaming.“
Come see Red Wire Black Wire this Sunday! This weekend Northside Festival takes over the streets of Brooklyn with music pouring out of each bar, venue and taco stand you can find. Make sure to make time to go see Red Wire Black Wire on Sunday night at the Charleston at 10:30 PM Sharp.
