FREE MP3: PHOSPHORESCENT: IT’S HARD TO BE HUMBLE (WHEN YOU’RE FROM ALABAMA)

Check out the new video from Phosphorescent for the southern honky tonk single ” It’s Hard To Be Humble (When You’re From Alabama)” off their most recent album Here’s To Taking It Easy.  Director Natalie Johns takes the band to New York and back below the Mason Dixon line for this Ala-f@kin-bama pride video with plenty of  uptempo horns, retro southern style and some sweet hogs that make for an equal part homesick /celebratory ode to Matthew Houck’s roots.

FREE MP3: BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE: FORCED TO LOVE

The new video from Broken Social Scene for “Forced to Love”employs some cutting edge 3D rendering and looks really unique. It was directed by MAKAPOON (Adam Makarenko & Alan Poon) and produced by Geoff McLean (Vision Entertainment).

“It’s an experimental 3D scanning technology that detects the displacement of a grid pattern of any object in front of it,” Poon explains.

“The data is then used to rebuild the object in three dimensions. Each band member’s performance was scanned using this technique and manipulated in the computer to create the effect you see in the final video.”

NEW MUSIC VIDEO FROM CLOGS: LAST SONG

Official music video for the experimental indie band Clog’s  “Last Song” (feat. Matt Berninger) from the album The Creatures In The Garden Of Lady Walton, a download-only single that pairs it with two unreleased B-Sides. Clogs are primarily an instrumental group formed by The National collaborators Bryce Desner and Padman Newsome, who actually formed pre-National.  (Hard to think The National was a side project) The video was created by Benjamin and Stefan Remirez-Perez, two twin brothers studying film and animation at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne, Germany and the Vancouver School of Digital Design.

We have also been hearing some buzz that the band is also working with Spike Jonze on a mysterious short film. But, while we wait for news on that front, check out a track for “Ready to Start” and a pretty sweet fan made music video. You can also stream the album in it’s entirety on NPR right HERE

GIRLS IN BIKINIS!…OH, AND MAYER HAWTHORNE: NEW VIDEO FOR “YOUR EASY LOVIN AINT PLEASIN NOTHIN”

Haven’t heard of eclectic Motown crooner Mayer Hawthorne yet? Well, you might remember him after watching his new video for “Your Easy Lovin’ Ain’t Pleasin’ Nothin'”. When I watched this the first time, I didn’t even realize I had my speakers off.  But it doesn’t really matter. He could sound like Justin Bieber, and I’ll keep watching, so long as he keeps making videos with these girls in bikinis.  This is sort of what goes on in my head on Friday afternoons…ok every afternoon, but now I can at least share it with other people.  Except, I’m not sure what this guy in the suit is doing here?  Respect to directors Jackson Perry & Henry DeMaio.

FREE MP3: N.A.S.A: I WANNA BE YOUR LOVER

This morning, musical collective N.A.S.A. (North America/South America) led by DJ and remixer Squeak E. Clean and Brazilian cutting edge DJ/pro-skateboarder DJ Zegon dropped a new video for “Strange Enough” feat. Ol’ Dirty Bastard (RIP), Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), and Fat Lip (Pharcyde). The video features all original artwork by Calma (aka Stephan Doitschinoff), was produced by Terence Teh and directed by Lorna T & Studio Giblets. Squeak E. Clean (aka Sam Spiegel) says:

“Calma, Terence and Lorna blew our mind with this new video. It’s a Dante’s Inferno of Brazilian art which fits the song perfectly.”

The duo recently released new album The Big Bang (Spectrophonic Sound/DashGo), which features two new tracks and dance floor interpretations of select songs from The Spirit of Apollo–their 2009 debut. A free MP3 of new track “I Wanna Be Your Lover” featuring Max Hedrum and Barbie Hatch is available now.

VIDEO REVIEW: BAND OF HORSES: LAREDO

“Laredo” is the second new song and the first official single from Band of Horses’ third album Infinite Arms which may redeem the band from the luke warm received last release “Compliments”. Inftinite Arms is an attempt to project the essence of different locales across America that became the setting for its recording and songwriting process. The rich musical heritage of Muscle Shoals, AL, the sublime beauty of Asheville’s Blue Ridge Mountains, the glamorous Hollywood Hills and the vast Mojave desert all influenced the sounds on this album. The serene woods of Northern Minnesota and the band’s native Carolina’s, all  inspired the songwriting, lending the compositions an air of comfort and familiarity. For their new video,”Laredo”, produced by Merge @Crossroads Films, they surprisingly didnt film in Laredo but Pioneertown, CA. Band of Horses “explansive country-rock feels custom-built for long drives through the wilderness.”(pitchfork) and the video features footage from an impromptu set the band played at local haunt Pappy & Harriet’s, mixed with some great desert road trip footage.  Anyone want to take a road trip?

FREE MP3: BLACK MOUNTAIN: OLD FANGS

For their first single “Old Fangs” off Black Mountain’s upcoming album Wilderness Heart, director Mike Bruce gives the 70’s throwback rockers everything you would come to expect from the Vancouver band. A retro feeling drug infused road trip with a sweet mustang, strange women, hallucinations, trippy owls, a skull-festooned motel room and plenty of aviator shades.  You can download a free MP3 of “Old Fangs” below.

VIDEO REVIEW: FOL CHEN: IN RUINS

LA sextet Fol Chen who is currently on tour with Liars, has a new video for the post-apocalyptic dance tune “In Ruins”off Part II: The New December. Whether or not you are getting sick of post apocalyptic videos, the new album promises to continue the narrative from Part I: John Shade, Your Fortune’s Made, picking up in a world “covered in ash, plagued by acid rain.”  Surprisingly not directed by Al Gore, director Chris Wilcha has created a world in ruin but one of new beginnings.

VIDEO REVIEW: PICTURE PLANE: TRUE RUIN LIGHT BODY

Kate Moross, Isomorph label head, lends her kaleidoscopic eye to Pictureplane’s new video for “True Ruin Light Body”. Paired with video producer Hans Lo and graphic designer Jack Featherstone the three create a trippy rotoscoped video flooded with some post-Led Zeppelin symbology, skulls and beats laid over some psychotropic colored flashing lights in the video’s background.

FREE MP3: INTERPOL: LIGHTS

After a long hiatus, Interpol is back with a beautiful and disturbing new video for “Lights”,which the band is currently distributing virally. The carefully choreographed video, directed by Charlie White, plays with timing, construction of movements and some really interesting editing to serve up a brilliantly themed video that leaves quite a bit open to interpretation. Deep within the chamber of the three horned rhinoceros beetle, a closely guarded pheromone harvesting ritual is about to begin.  A poor creature is lured to the light by some sexily body painted women, where she is groomed, injected and in her excitement she produces a milky drug that the other creatures want and need. But in the awkwardly abrupt ending, she seems to be disregarded as the others have no need for her. Or maybe as the songs lyrics suggest, the girl has just become lost to the darkness, part of a dark feeding cycle of pleasure addiction.

VIDEO REVIEW: WOODS: DEATH RATTLE

Woods’ video for “Death Rattle”  may match the song’s eerie mood perfectly and seem uber creepy but its director, Sophia Peer is surprisingly restrained in this Wicker Man-ish cult laden clip.  You can check out Peer’s work here.

VIDEO REVIEW: MYSTERY JETS: DREAMING OF ANOTHER WORLD

Stepping out of a 1960’s Esquire spread, the UK indie pop quintet,Mystery Jets, dress to impress a go-go girl, ignore her and take turns grooming themselves in thehighly stylish, cinematic video for “Dreaming of Another World” from director Yoann Lemoine.

ANIMAL COLLECTIVE: GUYS EYES

Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavillion must have topped everyone’s favorite album list last year and now the band has finally released a video for “Guys Eyes”.  A faded, nostalgic vintage home surf/skate vid oozing manifest destiny, that has me fighting the urge to get in a car and head west.

FANG ISLAND: CAREFUL CROSSERS

Fang Island may be the best basement show you’ll never see. Shining, flashing lights and shiny, flashy shirts pepper the bands new video for “Careful Crossers”, managing to capture the indie darlings at variable speeds in a lucky somebody’s basement. (Who said you can’t rock indie in a patriotic hoodie?)

ARIEL PINKS HAUNTED GRAFFITI: BRIGHT LIT BLUE SKIES

Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti has a new video for their cover of the 60’s Boston crew the Rockin Ramrods’ hit “Bright Lit Blue Skies”.  Great song and great video directed by Steve Hanft, who has the band using a makeshift cardboard Trojan Horse to break into the Saint Rincon School For Girls for some heavy petting.
