I’ve been a huge fan of Deertick since I discovered their first EP “War Elephant” in 2007. Lucky enough to catch the band rock out the sold out last show of the Knitting Factory in Manhattan last New Years Eve and again this summer, they have yet to disappoint. With an even stronger second album “Born on Flag Day”, these guys have solidified themselves as a band to watch. Originally from Providence, a city associated with experimental and noise rock, singer-songwriter John McCauley’s soulful raspy voice and guitar, echo more grunge with old school country blues roots. “It’s the sound of a young man who rocked out to Nirvana at 13 but then was floored by Hank Williams and Townes Van Zandt a few years later…minus the ironic detachment and lack of sentimentality or connection to the roots of our country and its music.” Cory W. Lovell, a film student at Burlington College, spent three months on the road with the band and has put together a new documentary of their tour: “Deer Tick: To the City of Sin!” I am excited to check this out and come back soon to check out Discosalt’s “Born on Flag Day” review coming shortly.
