MP3- A PLACE TO BURY STRANGERS: YOU ARE THE ONE

Guitars as jet engines; guitars as haunted electronics; guitars as filling-melting white heat: A Place To Bury Strangers’ new album Worship is explosive, visceral, and dark.
The DIY-braintrust of Death By Audio wizard Oliver Ackerman and bassist Dion Lunadon continue the evolution of songwriting that began with Onwards to the Wall, interweaving threads of krautrock, dream-pop, and 80s goth without ever losing the edge that is quintessentially Strangers. There are ambitious, trend-bucking choices at every turn.

TORONTO NOISE MAKERS ODONIS ODONIS DEBUT NEW SINGLE: BUSTED LIP

Taken from the debut album ‘Hollandaze’ – a grimy, gum-splattered ménage of surf-gaze, punk and lo-fi – ‘Busted Lip’ is the latest single from noisy Canadian’s Odonis Odonis.  Originally a solo project for prolific songwriter/ bandleader Dean Tzenos, Odonis Odonis has in the last year also become a formidable live concern. Based in Toronto, Odonis Odonis make killer hook-driven tunes that hark back to the classic ‘80s sounds of The Jesus & Mary Chain, Pixies, Big Black and The Cure. Like a good post-modernist, however, these influences colour but do not define Odonis Odonis.

Compiled from a wealth of material written and home-recorded between January 2009 and September 2010, Dean recorded virtually all of ‘Hollandaze’ alone in a tiny home studio, writing two or three songs a day – generally starting with drum programming – before adding bass then guitar and vocals, experimenting with a host of different styles.

PORTLAND DREAM POP: RADIATION CITY DEBUT NEW TRACK AND NEW VIDEO

Portland, OR-based Radiation City has debuted a brand new single ‘Eye of Yours‘, off their forthcoming Cool Nightmare EP, set for release on April 10.The emotion for the release stems from an old piano the band thoroughly used to record the EP on, just before smashing it to pieces on their “Find It Of Use” video, directed by Andrew Sloan.
The dream-pop quintet (now with the addition of vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Patti King) will be selling the EP digitally and on USB sticks attached to collected piano keys as they embark on their first trip to SXSW as part of a tour through the West Coast and the Midwest (image below). Cool Nightmareis available for preorder here.

HobNob Wines’ INNER CIRCLE is featuring the new track,  “Summerlong” (mixed by Abe Seiferth of DFA), as a free download.  The track is live now on HobNob Wines’ INNER CIRCLE on Facebook.

NEW TRACK FROM THE ROCKETBOYS: BLOODLESS

In anticipation of their upcoming performances at SXSW, Austin based indie rock trio The Rocketboys have debuted a brand new song, “Bloodless,” from their long-awaited new full-length album, Build Anyway, which is scheduled for release on June 5.  The band is set to perform seven shows at SXSW this month.
Stream “Bloodless”:
Recorded in their home studio and mixed by CK Eiriksson (U2, Live, Phish), Build Anyway chronicles the emotions that surface through the brokenness in abandonment to the search for peace and closure, both personally and musically.  Frontman Brandon Kinder conveys the feelings dreamily as he paints a haunting, yet heartfelt picture with his rich crooning vocals on the album’s debut track, “Bloodless,” giving fans a preview of what’s to come on Build Anyway.

NEW VIDEO FROM TEARIST: UNARMED

Watch the new video from Tearist for the single “Unarmed” directed by Sean Stout.

Over the last two years Tearist has become one of the most notorious and vital bands in the new underground pulsing through Los Angeles. Building on songs driven by intense vocals and synths, the duo’s performances are known for being deeply physical and direct events. Yasmine Kittles sings from the depths of her body/soul and moves in a near-transfixed state, using scrap metals to scrape rhythm from the ground beneath her. All the while, as if telepathically linked, William Strangeland uses sputtering, cracked synthesizers to create shimmering melodic lines along rumbling interlocked beats and rhythms. Their songs flow and surge, building thick layers of analog sound and noise, often leaving wrecked PA’s in their wake.

BAND RADAR: HOWLER

Based in Minneapolis, Howler are Jordan Gatesmith (vocals / guitar), Ian Nygaard (guitar), France Camp (bass), Max Petrek (keyboard) and Brent Mayes (drums). The five-piece have released their debut album, America Give Up via Rough Trade Records on MP3 & LP and will be supporting The Vaccines’ full UK tour later this year.

The debut EP ‘This One’s Different’ is also available now.

DOWNLOAD STARFAWN: GREENLIGHT [TEEEL REMIX]

Check out this dark disco remix of Starfawn’s “Greenlight” from Teeel.

Download a copy of Starfawn’s EP – available digitally now through Moodgadget, more info at moodgadget.com/starfawn/

Starfawn is a collaboration between Producer Misha Mross and Vocalist Amber Schaefer that began in early 2011. The two met through mutual friends and connected over a shared love for synthesizers and electronic music.

Misha Mross currently lives in Brattleboro Vermont and splits his time between his day job as an electro-optical engineer, writing music, and his musical engineering projects, which include building custom MIDI controllers and interfaces, and programming synthesis software. Influenced by both the organic (Vermont woods, classical music, physics, math) and the technological (NES/SNES, electrical engineering, synthesizer music), his production style, while heavily synth based, has natural motion and melody.

While Misha Mross is the technical expert of the duo, Brooklyn resident Amber Schaefer brings her natural charisma and song-writing abilities to the project. Amber tangibly brings her acting and improv background to their performances, cooing as she nonchalantly rolls around on the stage.

Together as Starfawn, they craft highly personalized electronic music that has been described as “an instantly recognizably retro, yet strange and otherworldly soundscape … that revels in experimentation while still understanding the importance of actually having a song amongst the indulgence.”

TEEEL SHOW THIS WEEK + NEW ALBUM COMING THIS MONTH

Inspired by italo, electro and the 80s new wave movement, Teeel aka Jim Smith credits his sound to marathon movie watching and being an obsessive gear head. Creating music in a 10×10 teal painted room, stacked with vintage synthesizers and guitars, TEEEL creates music that ranges from hypnotic synthpop to dreamy disco and dark electronica. Although TEEEL is a fairly new solo project, Jim Smith is no rookie in the music industry. He’s been producing a wide range of music, performing with bands and DJing in clubs since the late 90s. His debut album, AMULET (Moodgadget Records) has generated quite the buzz in the blog world as well as being featured on KEXP radio. “Dark Passenger” was featured as “Song of the Day”.

You can check out a night of electronic bliss this Thursday at 11:15 at Lit Lounge in New York City with Teeel performing along with Starfawn, Jacob 2-2, and Crozet. Doors open at 8:30pm.  Lit Lounge is 93 2nd Ave. (btwn. E5/E6th St). Click HERE for more details.

NEW MUSIC FROM LELAND SUNDRIES: APPARITION

Brooklyn’s indie strummers Leland Sundries’ 2nd release The Foundry EP is out Feb 21, 2012 on L’Echiquier Records. Led by Nick Loss-Eaton the EP was recorded in Greenpoint, Brooklyn in an old creamery building with Loss-Eaton on resonator guitar, banjo, harmonium, harmonica, and vocals.

The lead single “Apparition” is now available for free download.

NEW VIDEO FROM BIG DEAL: TALK

Kacey Underwood and Brit Alice Costelloe aka Big Deal just released a new video for “Talk”, off their most recent album Lights Out.  Directed by the talented, Brooklyn director Yoonha Park (Washed Out, Deerhoof and Beach House) the video  captures the bands innate ability to tap into the innocence, insecurity, wonder and (sometimes unrequited) love and lust of relationships. With a combination of sparse interweaving lo-fi guitars, emotive lyrics, set against the fuzzed out chords of an electric guitar and the tones of a boy / girl vocal create a sound that is sweet and seductive. Understated and discreet, it feels like a love note passed between classes.

Big Deal will be coming to the US in March for SXSW, including two special shows in New York and a show in Los Angeles, marking the band’s live debut in the US.
