SUPERHERO PUNKS: PHOTOGRAPHY FROM NIALL O’BRIEN
Our friends at Sick Of The Radio have posted another great photo blog that reminds us of the Penelope Spheeris ’84 cult classic Suburbia. Three years after her groundbreaking doc The Decline Of Western Civilization, and pre-dating Wayne’s World, Spheeris traced a bunch of suburban punk runaways, including a very young, and then unknown Flea from The Chili Peppers, who squat out a minimalist, punk lifestyle in an abandoned tract home and display some, well, “DIY” after school special acting chops. Worth dropping in the netflix queue for the live footage of D.I. performing “Richard Hung Himself” and True sounds of liberty performing “darker my love”…and of course mini Flea putting a rat in his mouth.
In a similar vein of Suburbia, “Irish Photographer and filmmaker Niall O’Brien followed around an photographed south-west London punks for four years compiling his “Superhero” series which showed a few months back entitled “Good Rats”. In a quote from a recent interview Niall said,”I walk around with these kids and the noses that are turned up are unbelievable, people are disgusted by the kids and they think of them as rats, people think they’re despicable, but I feel, in my heart of hearts that they are good kids. Hanging the show has been easy, Art Works Space is a really beautiful gallery, I saw it and just thought yeah, perfect. It’s a massive space and I’ve had to fill it, I’ve never done things by halves, (laughs).” (sickoftheradio.com)

And here are some scenes from Suburbia. Seriously, check out mini Flea:

FREE MP3: COMMON GRACKLE: THE GREAT DEPRESSION
Welcome to the world of Common Grackle, the collaboration of two Canadian musical wiz kids – indie pop songwriter and mad-cap illustrator, Gregory Pepper and Saskatoon psych hip hop producer Factor. The Great Depression is what happens when Factor’s recognizable banging drums get enveloped in Gregory Pepper’s lush harmonies, hilariously cynical lyrics, and gorgeous instrumentation. The Great Depression blurs all sorts of lines and tears down all sorts of genre definitions and definitely requires your time. Think the somber confessionals of Elliott Smith, re-worked by Dangermouse!!

NEW VIDEO FROM DEAD MANS BONES: PA PA POWER
Is there anything more frustrating than when an actor turns out to be a good musician too? Dead Man’s Bones is just one more reason to hate or secretly become facebook fans of Ryan Gosling (Half Nelson, The Notebook). Formed between “the Gos” and his buddy Zach Shields, Dead Man Bones released an unexpectedly solid debut album last year, A Never Let a Lack of Talent Get You Down on their own label, Werewolf Heart. The band collaborated with the Silverlake Conservatory Children’s Choir in an elderly residents home to create their new, touching, self-made and not so surprisingly very cinematic video for ” Pa Pa Power”. This is like a really solid short film filled with melancholy sweetness touching on darker elements that all gets reconciled into an upbeat dance party and new gospel choir version of “Pa Pa Power”. Watch the full 13 minute video below:

NEW VIDEO FROM WAVVES: POST ACID
Southern Cali’s garage rock punk band Wavves have teamed up with Green Label Sound for a drugged/spaced out new video for “Post Acid”. Aliens, skateboarding, raging, MTV VJ John Norris, and the guys clearly tripping hard…check. Is this “post” acid?

FREE MP3: PIERCED ARROW: THE DOORWAY
Pierced Arrow, formed from the wreckage of Portland Oregon’s Dead Moon, an underground cult garage rock band from 1987 to 2006, embody a fiercely independent DIY ethos and rock and roll spirit that is unmatched by most musicians today. Band mates Fred Cole and real life sweetheart of 42 years, Toody stubbornly record everything in mono, press their own albums on vintage equipment and live out in the woods in a mansion they build for themselves. Six grandkids later, they still play raw, ragged straightforward rock ‘n’ roll, garage punk that comes from a musical culture spanning 30 years and sounds relevant despite the bands youngest member being 39. These guys are no joke.
The band has announced an upcoming North American tour that begins September 30 at legendary club 7th St. Entry in Minneapolis, MN.The ex-Dead Moon veterans will play 21 dates across the US before closing out the tour in Weed, CA on October 23rd.
The jaunt comes in the wake of Pierced Arrows’ recent split 7″ with label mates Black Lips, released in July via Scion A/V. In keeping with the other releases in the Vice-curated Scion Garage 7″ series, both bands debuted new songs on the single. Pierced Arrows’ offering, “The Doorway”, is a keen demonstration of the raw, unbridled rock that collaborators Fred and Toody Cole have honed over their 30+ year career. Scion A/V also recently released the band’s first proper music video for “This is the Day” from their most recent full length Descending Shadows.
