QUASI: REPULSION

You might not be completely familiar with Quasi unless you are from the Northwest, but the under-rated Portland, OR indie band has been around since ’93.  Band members Coomes and Weiss have an interesting music history; they have been married to each other, divorced, Coomes has played bass with Elliott Smith and Weiss formerly drummed for Sleater-Kinney. Together, the couple has released eight full length albums, a live CD and several singles, even a cover of the Rolling Stones “Paint It Black” backed by Elliot Smith.  Their new guitar heavy sludge pop album American Gong was released this past February on Kill Rock Stars label and the single “Repulsion” has an early Dinosaur Jr. feel to it. A bit messy and dark overlapped with some really awesome vocal harmonies.  Check out the bands low-budget video for “Repulsion” below:

BBU: CHI DONT DANCE

Chi town  is churning out some seriously good new school hip-hop these days. If you are a fan of Cool Kids , you are going to dig the Windy City’s newest talent about to blow up, BBU (aka. the less than PC, Bin Ladens Blowin’ Up or Black, Brown and Ugly). Their new single, “Chi Don’t Dance” could be, as the band suggests, the first bona fide summer jam to get at us this year.  While it does carry the cadence of a regional hit, BBU has taken ” a simple idea, and spun it into something heartening and communal, a flavorful medley of call-and-response, spitfire rhymes (“MTV gave me ADD, BET taught me to hate me”) and beat structures so primal that even the shyest of partygoers will be forced to show us what they got.” So check it out, Juke, shimmy, rock , bounce, do whatever the fuck feels good.

APPLES IN STEREO: DANCE FLOOR (WITH ELIJAH WOOD)

New video from Apples in Stereo for the uber catchy synthy single, “Dance Floor”  featuring the  hobbit star power of Elijah Wood. Apples in Stereo’s new album  Traveller’s in Space and Time will be officially released on April 20th and according to the band sounds “like there’s a party on a UFO, and everybody’s invited to come in.” The video for “Dance Floor” might not involve UFO’s but does involve a time-travel caper involving Wood as a middle school physical science and gym teacher along side Apples lead Schneider, as a scientist/ disco singer who uses the electromagnetic properties of fruit and vegetables to make beats.  Seems like strange bed fellows, but Frodo actually owns the label, Simian Records, that’s releasing the new Apples In Stereo album and directed the band in their video for “Energy”. Check out the video for “Dance Floor” and the teaser below.

TWIN TIGERS: CURIOUS FACES VIOLET FUTURE

Athens, Georgia band Twin Tigers have been creating a serious buzz down south. Their self-released EP, Curious Faces Violet Future is a dark collection of neo-psychedelic songs with plenty of distortion in the vein of Jesus and Mary Chain, Sonic Youth, and The Black Angels.  They are, according to Future Sounds, “the kind of band that could dismantle SilverSun Pickups from their perch on top of the Smashing Pumpkins/Primal Scream/Sonic Youth post.”  They play really raw noisy tunes with plenty of guitar feed back and reverb to create trance-like layers to the melodies hidden beneath.  The band is currently on tour with the Hold Steady, touching down in New York on May 3rd at Cameo Gallery in Brooklyn and Pianos on May 4th.

You can also download the track “Passive Idol”, or watch the bands trippy new video for “Red Fox Run”, directed by Robert U. Thomason.

SOFT LANDING: CHANNELING THE CRAZY WITHOUT GETTING MATH-Y

Soft Landing began as a recording project by Paul Collins. Between finishing school and touring the world with Beirut, he never really had time to focus on his project. After a month long tour in Brazil, Beirut took a break. It was then that he grabbed Perrin Cloutier (Beirut) and Michael Lawless (Paul’s college friend). Soft Landing, the band, was born. Knowing that free time like this never lasts, the band would practice almost everyday. In January, they drove out to Chicago, and recorded their debut record with Griffin Rodriguez (Icy Demons). The record is currently being mixed, and will be out soon. All of Paul’s songs seem to pull together multiple influences. From Jorge Ben to Arthur Russell, it’s all in there. The beats are huge, the electric guitar is liquid, and the acoustic relentlessly propels the rhythm. Yet, the bands ultimate goal is to make honest music that suits the players playing it. Channeling the crazy without getting math-y.

Their record isn’t done yet, but you can check out some frees unmastered tracks, courtesy of the band and Discosalt below:

DJANGO DJANGO: SKIES OVER CAIRO

The new Django Django single “Skies Over Cairo” is now available for free download, and can be found lurking on the B-side of their new single “WOR”. The UK quartet, who has been described by NME as sounding like Hot Chip crossed with Neil Young /Devo with Arthur Russell/ Meat Beat Manifesto with Moondog, is resting their mantra of “Booze, broads and barbershop chords” and embarking instead upon an instrumental Saharan sojourn that takes in snake-charmer synths and the same polyrhythms that weave through the music of The Beta Band, whose John Maclean is the brother of Django man Dave, not incidentally. “Wor” is out now through The Bonjour Branch.

REN ROX PHOTOGRAPHY

Lately, I’ve been really digging London based photographer/artist Ren Rox. She has a serious CV under her belt, being featured in publications like The Face, Dazed & Confused, Dazed Digital, BlackBook, Oyster, Neo2, Fader, NME, Clash, Stella (The Telegraph), DAMn, Magnificent, Artrocker, Calle 20, LaMilk, Lamono, Dirrty Glam, Prim, Soko, etc. But what’s more impressive, her photos have this really recognizable cool dreamlike psychedelia to them that we love.  While, Ren’s online portfolio is fashion minded, she also documents art, music, travel, and herself. And if she ever gets bored with photography, her self-portraits show she is just as good in front of the camera as behind it.  A great mix of personal, high fashion and rock n’ roll and in her music collection, Ren has had the amazing fortune to work with a solid crop of some of Discosalt’s favorite musicians like: Crystal Castles, The Kills,  Peaches, The XX, Art Brut, Von Bondies, Late of the Pier, Camera Obscura, Lightspeed Champion, Be Your Own pet, The Datsuns, and Vivian Girls, to name a few. You can check out the Complete list below. We are really looking to seeing more of what Ren has in store in the coming future.

So many great photos to choose from, but here are some of Discosalt’s favorites:

DR. DOG: SHAME SHAME

(courtesy of Dr. Dog)

Some last minute, but breaking news for Dr. Dog fans.  Dr. Dog will be performing songs from their recently released “Shame, Shame” tonight at 7pm at the Apple Store in Soho, New York.  I last saw Dr. Dog at the Forecastle Festival where they put on a fantastic show, so this is well worth checking out.  The album was released on April 2nd and has much more of a 60s & 70s pop feel to it, recalling The Beach Boys to the Beatles to Bowie. The show is free, so Discosalt suggests getting there early! See ya there.

You can also stream the album “Shame, Shame” it in its entirety right HERE, courtesy of NPR. just click and enjoy!

EVERYBODY KNOWS THIS IS NOWHERE

Everybody knows this is nowhere, is the latest gallery exhibition from American photographer Ryan McGinley at Team Gallery in New York. The show runs only until April 17, 2010, so get over there before its gone. McGinley’s last exhibit featured a photo series of carefree teenagers playing in the American desert but for this new exhibit, he has taken an extensive series of nude black and white studio portraits of 150 hand selected subjects.  While Neil Young’s album by the same name took 2 weeks to record,  McGinley, has spent the last 2 years composing this exhibit. “The result is a surprisingly restrained, open-ended study of black and white portraiture. Here we see McGinley not as a chronicler of youthful adventure, but as an engine for an almost scientific cataloguing of a kind of emotional optimism.” They kind of remind us a little of Hedi Slimane’s photo diaries.  Check out some of the images from the exhibit below:

Team is open from Tuesday through Saturday, 10am to 6pm and located at 83 Grand Street, cross streets Wooster and Greene, on the ground floor.

FUCK BUTTONS: OLYMPIANS

Discosalt Video of the Week 5/4/10: On April 12th, experimental, dance minded noise group  Fuck Buttons will digitally release their new single “Olympians“,  as well as release the song on limited edition 12” vinyl  in five different colors (one for each Olympic ring). While “Olympians” first appeared as a 10-minute track on 2009’s Tarot Sport, the vinyl will feature remixes from Spiritualized’s J. Spaceman and Suicide’s Alan Vega. There is also a  trippy 3D hidden-image sleeve designed by the band. For more info and to order check out atprecordings.com. For a noise group, Fuck Buttons are surprisingly accessible, dropping a dreamy mix of sheen melodic undercurrents and abrasive climaxes.  A style that hints less towards unwelcome noise and more towards Yo La Tengo, My Bloody Valentine, Purient, and Black Dice. The bands new low-budget kung-fu video for Olympians is out now and you can check it out below.

FAN DEATH: REUNITED

Disco may have died in 1979, but it has been reborn in the Vancouver girl disco duo Fan Death. Not quite nu rave, indie dance, or guitar rock disguised by funk undercarriage, these women are straight up downcast, sad symphonic disco with some synth pop sensibility. They started out as the protégés of glam-trash DJ Erol Alkan and in a press release they declare their intention to  “make music that recalls the greatest era of electronic pop: Depeche Mode, OMD, New Order, Human League, Soft Cell and Pet Shop Boys. Great songs that happened to be electronic, not soulless, repetitious club music that seems to dominate these days.” Their new video, conceived and directed by Dandilion Wind Opaine,  features a special extended mix of “Reunited” from their new EP  A Coin for the Well. Love it! Make sure you watch it to the end. There might be some things you wouldn’t understand. Things you couldn’t understand. Things you shouldn’t understand. The mind plays tricks on you. You play tricks back! It’s like you’re unraveling a big cable-knit sweater that someone keeps knitting and knitting and knitting and knitting and knitting and knitting…

also make sure to check out the girls next month at NYC’s Webster Hall on May 7th.

CARY ANN HEARST: ARE YOU READY TO DIE

We don’t normally post about Country music here, but, I’m a sucker for country women. South Carolina crooner Cary Ann Hearst is no exception. She has a big mouth, a sparkle in her eye and a simple sense of melody and primeval sense of guitar rhythm that is a direct result of her Nashville upbringing. She cried when she woke up in Jackson, MS on her first tour bus ride with Butch Walker because she wanted to see her Grandfather’s grave. She is a small and powerful piece of artillery and she sings like Jesus’ little probate. Those who hate country music hate her especially for forcing them to like country music, but she doesn’t give a shit about what people like!  Cary plays lo-fi, no frills barebone guitar, and with raw lyrics about theives, priests and prostitutes like “fucked to bits/all ass and tits”, her music never pretends to hide behind anything. This is music that harks back to the golden era of country music and sounds even better out in the backwoods, laying on the hood of a car, drinking whiskey, smoking cigs and telling ghost stories. If you are a fan of Lucinda WilliamsHolly Golightly, Neko Case, Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn or The White Stripes, you should check out some free MP3 downloads of of Cary’s music below:

Her EP Are You Ready To Die is also out now, via FILTER US Recordings.

OH MERCY: PRIVILEGED WOES

Oh Mercy is an indie band out of Melbourne, Australia you will probably be hearing a lot more about this year.  The band, originally formed back in 2006, is made up of Alexander Gow on vocals and guitar; Thomas Savage on piano, guitar and vocals;  Eliza Lam on bass and vocals and Rohan Sforcinaon on drums and carriage robbery.  Oh Mercy is the kind of indie rock band that flirts with your emotions; one minute their songs are jovial, full of rhythm and layers of pop friendly lyrics—and the next they are edged with salty salutations and moody stoicism. Adept and sincere this foursome harmonizes into one and is both bold and memorable. Before you know it you will find yourself hearing the bass line to “Lay Everything On Me” before you have opened your eyes in the morning until you lay down at night. There is a reason Ben Folds HAND PICKED this band to perform at the Sydney Opera House.

With Privileged Woes, their DEBUT album, Oh Mercy steps out of Melbourne’s spotlight and into the global musical arena. Mixed by Matt Voigt (Cat Power, The Dirty Three, Paul Kelly) and Mastered by Steve Fallone (TV on The Radio, The Strokes) at Sterling Sound in New York City the album, Privileged Woes is out everywhere NOW.

TEENGIRL FANTASY: PORTOFINO

Teengirl Fantasy is the dreamy electronic love child of two Oberlin College students, Logan Takahashi and Nick Weiss. The duo create electro clicks and beeps with some Booty-Pop drone that is danceable… in slow motion, for the indie rocker dance challenged (think Fuck Buttons, Neon Indian, Beach Fossils). They have had a few small releases in the past year, including a Telepathe remix, the single “Hollywood Hills” , a digital download TGIF EP and, “Portofino”. They recently signed onto True Panther records with the plan to release a full LP this year. Check out the video for “Portofino” or download some tracks below:

BAND OF HORSES: COMPLIMENTS

Produced by Band of Horses with additional production from Phil Ek and mixed by Dave Sardy,   the songs on Infinite Arms project the essence of the different locales across America that became the setting for the recording and songwriting process behind the album. The rich musical heritage of Muscle Shoals, AL, the sublime beauty of Asheville’s Blue Ridge Mountains, the glamorous Hollywood Hills and the vast Mojave desert all influenced the sounds on Infinite Arms and helped yield the group’s most focused and dynamic recordings to date. The serene woods of Northern Minnesota and the band’s native Carolinas inspired the songwriting, lending the compositions an air of comfort and familiarity. Band of Horses is Ben Bridwell, Creighton Barrett, Ryan Monroe, Tyler Ramsey and Bill Reynolds. Long time touring members of the group, Infinite Arms marks the recording debut of Ramsey and Reynolds, while Barrett and Monroe graced the last album, Cease to Begin. Through touring together in support of Cease to Begin and during breaks in the Infinite Arms recording process, the band have become a cohesive force with all members making invaluable contributions to the unmistakable sound that founder Bridwell has crafted since the band’s inception.
