NO RADIOHEAD AT OCCUPY WALL STREET TODAY

Sorry folks, No soap, No Radiohead. The band’s representative Steve Martin of Nasty Little Man said in an email “We can officially confirm this is NOT happening.”   Twitter rumors have been circulating of  a confirmed Radiohead  “surprise” show downtown for the Occupy Wall Street protest this afternoon at 4pm, but looks like this will not happen.  The band will however,  stick around NYC to play Jimmy Fallon’s late show Monday night, and has been rumored to play the All Tomorrow’s Party over the weekend.

THE PASS: LIVE AT PIANOS/FONTANAS

Kentucky is not the first place you would expect to find a dance rock band of the caliber of The Pass, but these Louisvillians aren’t one to let their geographics tie them down. Which is lucky for us, considering we had two opportunities to see them play this past weekend in New York. Selling out venues across the country (twice selling out NY’s Pianos and even the 700 person Headliners in their hometown of Louisville), The Pass are nevertheless one of the more underrated bands of the scene. That was, perhaps, until Friday night when the line to get into Pianos stretched around the corner of the block and dozens of people that we spoke to were unable to get into see the band. For a young band still out to prove itself, there are certainly worse problems to have.

Drawing influences from Justice and LCD Soundsystem (R.I.P.), The Pass create a basement party kind of sweaty dance rock that packs crowds in and keeps even the most rigid hipsters moving. Recently featured on the CMJ and SXSW websites, big things are coming for this band who have found their music in primetime television and several CW and MTV televisions.

The sets at Pianos and Fontanas navigated the usual hits with all of the songs for which videos have been produced (except Criminal) making their appearance, but we were fortunate to be treated to two brand new songs, “It’s Less Dangerous” and “Hologram,” both of which were written in the last few weeks with kinks still getting worked out. The first of the new records had the anthematic quality showing the promise of that truly great record the labels are always looking for and the second displayed a really interesting wah wah kind of sound showing an exploration and development of guitar leads in their sound. Perhaps the tweet from Bank Robber Music said it best when they said “Wow. Suspicions confirmed at Pianos. @ThePassTheBand can’t write a bad song.” While they didn’t have the birdmen look this time, they put on a great show as always. In their feature, CMJ said “The courageous quartet pours passionate lyrics into a whirlwind of synthesizers and upbeat rhythms, all while catering to the perfect dance party environment” and notes that “the Pass’ music draws inspiration from dance parties, relationships, making out, the power of positive thinking and whatever rests in between.” It couldn’t be clearer from this week’s performances how true those statements are.

The Pass are definitely a band to keep up with so that you can be the guy or girl who knew about them before they blow up, and we’ll definitely be at the next performance (if we can get in the door).

Q + A: SUCKERS

Discosalt’s Rachel Covert sat down with the band Suckers in their Brooklyn recording space to discuss their new album Wild Smile; the epic debut following up 2009’s self-titled EP produced by Yeasayer‘s Anand Wilder. The album, available on French Kiss Records, is a rowdy mix of indie art rock and synth. Equal parts experimental and accessible, at times echoing some of the glam grandeur of Bowie. The three singers/ multi-instrumentalists Austin Fisher, Quinn Walker (Fisher’s cousin), and the mysterious Pan share some insight into their music, David Bowie, touring with Menomena, stories from the road, albums in heavy rotation and “Labryth Rock”, a term coined by album producer Chris Zane (Passion Pit, The Walkmen, Les Savy Fav).

Shot back in August, a small camera crew “SNAFU” led us to believe the footage was completely lost, but eight months later, the tape has miraculously resurfaced…

And now, the lost Suckers interview:

LOCAL BAND TO WATCH: NEW NUMBERS

New Numbers is finally self-releasing their debut full length album Vacationland, today on their own label Musiques Primitives.

The Brooklynite indie band consisting of former singer/guitarist Josh Abbott and drummer Mike Fadem of Jealous Girlfriends recorded the album in 24 hours, completely out of  their pockets, tweaking the final tracks  in Josh’s Williamsburg living room.

The result is a sincere nine song EP that features two re-imagined tracks off the band’s first EP, Islands, and hones in on the bands emerging new sound and identity.  The album draws on a whole mix of influences;  plenty of fuzzed out guitar, catchy synth driven 80’s indie pop/rock hooks reminiscent of the Pixies and Smiths, hints of Psychedelia and Reggae and even some Brian Eno era Bowie-esc melodies. “This is a collection of dense and melodic songs that rewards multiple listens with it’s trove of sonic treats.”

Grab a digital copy of the album today on iTunes or most other digital stores. And for vinyl junkies, it’s also available on some really sick  hand screened, limited and very special edition clear vinyl! from our friends at These Are Not Records (www.thesearenotrecords.com).

WE LISTEN FOR YOU PRESENTS: THE PASS @ PIANOS

Our friends at We Listen For You put together such an incredible show back in September, that Pianos has asked them to curate a full day following CMJ. This time the guys have outdone themselves with an incredible lineup. Starting at 2pm and running through 1 am, they’ve got Indian Rebound, Caveman, Modern Rivals, Hip Hatchet, Bell, The Seedy Seeds, Slow Animal, SOARS, Radical Dads, The Pass, and Sunglasses. At the September 11th show for The Pass, Radical Dads and Slow Animal, the door was double sold and the place was packed.

The entire lineup for the night is going to be one of the best all CMJ weekend, but one of our personal favorite bands, The Pass (who is taking the 11pm spot just before Sunglasses) will be one of the most exciting to see. The Pass recently released their debut album on sonaBLAST! Records and in conjunction with the release they have put together a witty video for the song Vultures. The video, conceptualized and directed by Zach Hart pays homage to 39 other music blogs (although not DiscoSalt). The Pass have never left a dance floor dry, so be prepared to dance, to sweat, and to be able to tell all your friends you were there.

“Stunningly photographed and expertly constructed, Last Train Home features the work of a filmmaker who has immersed himself in the lives of his subjects . . . to explore the story of their fractured family. Many moments in this intimate movie are incredibly striking and ultimately symbolic of a much broader situation.”

ALL TOMORROWS PARTIES: MUSIC FESTIVAL AND DOCUMENTARY

Last year, Future Cinema in association with Warp Films presented a documentary film called All Tomorrow’s Parties, directed by All Tomorrow’s People and Jonathan Caouette. The film documents the history of the long running All Tomorrow’s Parties Music Festival, which is often described as a “post-punk DIY bricolage.” The film was created by both fans and musicians who attended the festivals, with  Super8, camcorders and even mobile phones.  There are some great performances from Grizzly Bear, Sonic Youth, Battles, Belle and Sebastian, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Les Savy Fav, Fuck Buttons, Iggy Pop, and the list goes on and on. Check out some trailers and don’t miss the next ATP festival this September in Monticello, NY. Details below:

WES ANDERSON’S SHORT FILM: HOTEL CHEVALIER

Posted in discosalt

So, we realize that it’s been more than a minute since Wes Anderson’s The Darjeeling Limited was released in theaters, but we came across the 13 minute film prequal Hotel Chevalier this week on vimeo and were reminded how entertaining it is…also, we were reminded that Natalie Portman bears more than her acting chops in it. Meow. If you haven’t seen the short in a while, or yet,  you can watch it in it’s entirety below, again…or for the first time. The entire short was shot in one hotel room in Paris where Jason Schwartzman’s character Jack Whitman and his x-girlfriend Natalie Portman break up in Wes’ signature style to Peter Sarstedt’s 1969 hit, “Where Do You Go My Lovely?”. The scene sets the tone and fills in some of the back story for Schwartzman’s character before he joins his older brothers on his spiritual journey to India in Darjeeling. Since we are rapping about movies, anyone seen this movie the Star Wars? Just caught it and I think it’s going to be huge too.

FREE MP3: SOFT LANDING SET TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM THIS FALL

Posted in Downloads, MUSIC

Soft Landing, the trio comprising Beirut’s Paul Collins & Perrin Cloutier, along with Mike Lawless, are self-described as “a bunch of Jorge Ben wannabees” and are releasing their first album this October. Soft Landing began as a recording project by Paul Collins. Between finishing school and touring the world with Beirut, he never really had time to focus on his project. After a month long tour in Brazil, Beirut took a break. It was then that he grabbed Perrin Cloutier (Beirut) and Michael Lawless (Paul’s college friend). Soft Landing, the band, was born. Knowing that free time like this never lasts, the band would practice almost everyday. In January, they drove out to Chicago, and recorded their debut record with Griffin Rodriguez (Icy Demons). The record is currently being mixed, and will be out soon. All of Paul’s songs seem to pull together multiple influences. From Jorge Ben to Arthur Russell, it’s all in there. The beats are huge, the electric guitar is liquid, and the acoustic relentlessly propels the rhythm. Yet, the bands ultimate goal is to make honest music that suits the players playing it.

MP3: SOFT LANDING- “BAPTISM”

MP3: SOFT LANDING- “MIC CHECK”

SOFT LANDING has a couple shows coming up at the end of July.

VISUAL ARTIST BOBBY HILL HIDES OVER $50,000 ON NYC STREETS AND TRAINS!

Posted in New Art

It seems as if there’s a grandiose game of hide n’ seek being played in NYC and no, I’m not talking about the kind played by grade school children in summer camp (although that’s fun too). Since July 2nd 2010, pedestrians and subway riders have been pleasantly surprised to find limited edition “Bobby Hill Multiple Original Art Prints” during their commute throughout the city. Each of these unique works of art is conservatively valued at $50 apiece (not considering prices increasing over time), which means Bobby Hill is dropping over a cool $50,000 in total on the unsuspecting folks of the 5 boroughs.

Internationally known visual artist Bobby Hill has created 1000 limited edition Multiple Original art prints to celebrate his one-man show, “BHILLBOARDS” (pronounced: billboards), which opens this upcoming 9/11, for two nights only in NYC during Fashion Week. The exact location will be announced August 31st via Resetuniverse.com and to those who RSVP. The original prints, which currently features images of Bob Dylan, Bob The Builder, and a special one of Muhammad Ali, were individually handcrafted by Mr. Hill on found corrugated cardboard. These pieces will continue to be strategically placed throughout NYC until September 10th, 2010.

The lucky few that find one, will have a unique work of art that lasts a lifetime and the opportunity to bring it to the Bhillboards Artshow to get it signed. In addition, the first 250 guests to the arrive at the show will receive a NYC 9/11 inspired “Bobby Hill Multiple Original Art Print.” For more info, visit www.resetuniverse.com or www.youtube.com/resetuniverse.

BHILLBOARDS is never resting on your laurels, never living off yesterday’s victories never taking anything for granted and always pushing the envelope by putting your best on display for the world to see. Bhillboards is determination multiplied by vision.  Bobby Hill, Resetuniverse.com, NYC… Bhillboards.
