STREAM THE HORROR’S NEW ALBUM: SKYING

The Horrors new self-produced third album Skying leaked over the weekend, so XL decided to stream the album in full before the official release on July 11th.  This is by far one of the most solid efforts to follow-up the hugely acclaimed Primary Colours, and maybe a sleeper best album of 2011.  Check out the track “Still Life”, a catchy shoegaze drenched Echo & The Bunnymen reminiscent track that is sure to be the psychedelic jam of the summer.

BAND RADAR: BUZZWORTHY SOUTH FLORIDA DUO: THE BAND IN HEAVEN

Stream the digitial album demos from The Band in Heaven; the latest noise duo making a name in the South Florida Music scene.

“The Band In Heaven sports a strong pop sensibility, and they make sure you hear it. It’s a trophy standing on a pedestal of guitar distortion and feedback. The sounds can be pretty punishing, but there’s a blissful, mind-numbing quality to their music, too. It could be likened to dream pop, but sleep is the last thing on my mind when this is on.” –theneedledrop.com

“If you dig the spacey, droning haze of NYC’s seminal Velvet Underground, Tx.’s primordial psych-pioneers the 13th Floor Elevators or even the dreamy revivalist mantras of such modern-day revisionists as Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Brian Jonestown Massacre or The Warlocks, this buzzworthy Orlando duo will make you smile, nod out and fumble for a massive glass of freshly squeezed orange juice. Their informed, crate-digger take on a genre which seems on the cusp of a major resurgence has all the lazy bombast of The Jesus & March Chain at their least “mature”: it’s a numbing wall of fuzzed-out bass, distorted guitar, combo organ and hypnotic, pounding drums drenched in echo and insouciantly bedraggled.” – Savannah’s Connect

THE STROKES: ANGLES

[rating:4.0]

The Strokes: Angles

Label: Rough Trade

Release Date: March 22, 2011

The Strokes officially release their fourth studio album, Angles tomorrow on Rough Trade.  After such a long hiatus and hyped as the first Strokes album with creative input from all five members, we were not quite sure what to expect from this album. But despite this albums diverse collaborative input and attempt to rebuild the band from the ground up, this is definitely still a “Strokes album”.  If you are expecting an ambitious statement from the band that will push the musical landscape in a new direction, you will no doubt be disappointed with this album. What you can expect is a collection of new songs from a continually evolving band, with a new sound that is refreshing but also familiar, maintaining their signature sound; catchy hooks, punchy guitars , Juliens droning monotone croon, subtle hints at reggae and 80’s rock.  After heavy rotation, this album proves itself a highly redeemable work, one of the bands most interesting, if uneven EP’s that is better and better with each listen. Like 2001’s overly hyped/ mis-represented Is This It, Angles is just straightforward catchy pop rock, meant to be enjoyed as just that. Pitchfork might want these guys to “quit while they’re ahead”, but if anything, Angles proves the Strokes are a band forging forward,  and we are glad they keep on, keeping on.

Read a more in depth album review from Discosalt contributing writer Andrew Bailey below:

Angles frequently sounds more like an album heavily influenced by The Strokes than actually by The Strokes. There seems to be a lot less attention to detail in the songwriting, the track-for-track reliance on big garage rock guitar riffs isn’t so aggressive, and the 1980′s have clearly left a very palpable impression. Even some alien reggae influences have seeped in on “Machu Picchu”, easily one of the record’s best tracks. Above all else though, what really stands out here is the quality of production (at last). The rugged garage aesthetic made sense on Is This It and even to some extent on Room on Fire. But by the time the band reached First Impressions — where they finally started trying to merge the old with the new — it started feeling overly manufactured. The Strokes are, after all, a big time rock group now. And they aren’t in their early-20′s anymore, either. Clinging to the same old lackluster production quality might have coddled a few old fans still starstruck by the sound they broke in with, but it wouldn’t have done anything for the band’s progression. All these changes might be big splashes of cold water to the face, but they’re all incredibly welcome ones. (Read More HERE)

ALBUM STREAM FROM WILDLIFE: BUCK UP

Switzerland’s entfant terrible, WILDLIFE! first gained public attention for his unanimously praised musical productions on Terry Lynn’s debut album “Kingstonlogic 2.0“. He continued making waves with his signature dancehall influenced take on contemporary electronic music with remixes for the likes of The Very BestPoirierMarina & The DiamondsThe Do, and released his debut EP “Jumbie” in Fall 2009 getting dancefloors bubbling with mad love from many a key player around the globe, with remixes from SchlachthofbronxMixhellEdu K, and Beware & Motorpitch. After hitting hard with his uptempo club material like “Jumbie” or his recent 135 bpm smasher “Metazoa“, released on Buraka Som Sistema’s Enchufada label in early fall 2010, WILDLIFE! now hits back with a fresh dancehall soaked project.  BUCKUP! The new EP rolls across dancehall’s golden eras, with Sammy Dread and Major Mackerel re-licking some of their biggest tunes that had the scenes on lock in the 80’s and 90’s. Alongside these two legends we have new era vanguard Terry Lynn paying tribute to the times by flipping a touch of Ini Kamoze’s “How You Living” into her own contemporary genre-bending monster with a double jeopardy attack.

“Buck UP” is officially released on the 22nd November but is exclusively available now via Bandcamp with a rather flexible price tag. He’s asking you to name your own price, with no minimum for a limited time!

ALBUM STREAM: TWIN SHADOW: FORGET

Moody Morrissey-esc crooner George Lewis Jr., aka Twin Shadow may be skirting familiar musical territory on his debut album Forget, produced by Chris Taylor (Grizzly Bear). But while the nostalgic Brooklyn project strikes some comfortable chords your feet already know how to dance to, he masters the lush romantic 1980’s new wave synth landscape in a way that seems fresh and heartfelt. So if you are tired of spinning your Echo and the Bunnymen records and looking for some new fall sounds to soothe a broken heart, stream the new Twin Shadow album right here or download a free mp3 of standout track “Slow” below.

ALBUM STREAM: BLOODY KNIVES: BURN IT ALL DOWN

Bloody Knives, a new visceral shoegaze band with a propensity for all encompassing noise blasts and bleeding textures have announced the release of their first EP,  “Burn It All Down”. Preston Maddox’s woozy vocals on the album cut through the rusty storm of guitars, drums, keys, and programming to add contrasting melodic references that will draw you in over and over again. The duo creates a riotous amount of sound, with every nuance carefully placed in the sonic landscape.

In Killredrocketrecords tradition, the downloadable version is, and always will be, free. There is also a limited edition handmade 10 page art book/cd combo available for purchase. Many of these sold on tour and during the pre-order, so if you want one you should get one while they are still available. All of these things are available at the Bloody Knives Bandcamp site.

For more information on the band, you can read the interview with “The Blog That Celebrates Itself” here
