PEGGY SUE: FOSSILS AND OTHER PHANTOMS
Two voices are better than one – or so goes the mantra of believers in the cult of Peggy Sue. Best friends and creative compatriots Katy Young and Rosa Slade, along with drummer Olly Joyce, bob and weave their soulful, R&B-ready voices in and out of complex vocal interplay achieving sonic qualities all their own. A folk power trio of sorts, Katy, Rosa and Olly blend minimalist drums, acoustic guitars, accordion and strings into a soul-folk shotgun blast that is much more than the sum of its parts. Emotionally, the album centers on the darker side of love, with sharp-penned one liners smoldering like embers ignited by the breath of Klaw and Rex’s voice and furious strumming. A folk-punk wake-up call and their debut full length, Fossils and Other Phantoms signals Peggy Sue as one of the UK’s most promising imports.
“There’s kind of theme that runs throughout the album, because it was written over one period of time,” Rosa said. “The process of writing songs is very therapeutic. It usually tends to come at a time when you need the outlet for something … There’s quite a lot about what remains after something’s ended and … absences that still occupy spaces and remnants of things that have passed.”

RED WIRE BLACK WIRE: BREATHING FIRE
Just in time for the weekend we have the perfect video for you to watch while getting ready to head out.
Red Wire Black Wire is a Brooklyn based 6-piece that creates music with the immediacy of a DJ and the subtlety of film score. The band’s recordings combine dense but precise layers of synthesizers, guitars, strings, horns, and pounding drums. Eschewing irony, singer Doug Walters focuses on the melancholy; critics have compared him to Robert Smith, William Burroughs, and Frank Miller. Red Wire Black Wire fuse electronic and organic counterpoint to create catchy, textured, and revealing compositions.
The band formed at Wesleyan University in Connecticut where they fleshed out Walters’ basement laptop compositions. The band self-released the 5 song Compass EP in 2008, which was later re-released by Tough Customer Records in the same year.
In 2009, the band moved to Brooklyn, New York and completed their first full-length album, Robots & Roses. The album’s synthesizer drenched, heavy-hitting, melancholic songs tell the story of Walters’ long New York nights from bars to bedrooms. His lyrics range from dreamlike and surrealistic portraits of city life to direct confrontation of lovers. They are stories of irresponsibility and indignation; love and loathing; sincerity and sarcasm. The album sounds just as great on a lonely subway ride home as it does on booming dance floor speakers.

TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS: MOJO
“I Should Have Known It” is the first official single off Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ Mojo, coming out June 15 on Reprise. It’s pretty bluesy and it’s very awesome. Restoring my man crush on the timelesHeartbreakers front man, Petty doesn’t seem to age and sounds just as good as he did 20 years ago. Watch the video here:
Tour dates are posted below and with every online ticket purchase, you get a free download of Mojo (two songs right away, the rest of the album on June 15) and also a bunch of live tracks from the tour at the end of the summer. Thanks Tom!
THE LOCAL NATIVES: WORLD NEWS
Matthew Lessner directed this cheeky video for Local Natives’ “Airplanes” ,taking you on a sunny mini vacation with sandy beaches, wild flowers, citrus salads, Hawaiian bathing suits, oxygen masks and ladys splashing around in a wading pool of punch. Lessner is the man behind the Dirty Projectors’ “Stillness Is the Move” video, which also doesnt make much sense, but sure as hell is fun to watch.
LCD SOUNDSYSTEM: DRUNK GIRLS
Spike Jonze directs the new LCD Soundsystem video for “Drunk Girls”, throwing LCD band mates into a frat bear college haze, with pandas gone wild, frontman James Murphy being forced into drag, the band stripped down, fire -extinguished, egged, duct taped and covered in booze. Ahhh, college.
THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS:YOUR HANDS (TOGETHER)
The New Pornographers’s video for previously-sampled single “Your Hands (Together)” was directed by Pornographer Blaine Thurier and features Vancouver’s Hybrid Movement group providing the ninja inspired choreography. “It’s 100 percent real,” insists Thurier. “There’s no camera trickery. They are doing Capoeira. It’s this Brazilian mix of martial arts and dance. It was developed by slaves and because they had their hands shackled, they could only kick and use their legs.” Check out the video below.
CASIO KIDS: FINN BIKKJEN
Discosalt Video of the Week 5/16/10: Casio kids are a bunch of misfit Norwegian musicians who churn out bouncy carefree 80’s influenced pop with a childish naivity that is impossible to feel bad listening to. Drawing on afro-beat, techno and out-and-out pop, the band draws similarities from Paul Simon’s “Graceland”, Ivor Cutler, New Order, King Tubby, Bob Hund, Cornelius and Fela Kuti.
The new video for “Finn Bikkjen” (Find Dogs!),directed by Greg Taylor is a dream sequence about a man’s search for his dog that features some fuzzy-eared, neon hoodie-clad and white puppet faced dancer. A strange, joyous and unique video that compliments the bands sound and will leave you day dreaming all day. Casio kids is bringing their live show to music festivals throughout Europe this summer, but will return to the US for a national tour in August. Dates to be announced shortly.

LIARS: THE OVERACHIEVERS
Following up their cryptic video for “Scissor” off Sisterworld, Liars are back with a new video for “The Overachievers”: a low budget American Psycho-esc treatment directed by the band’s Aaron Hemphill. On the surface, like the sarcastic lyrics in the song first suggest, everything is quite banal for the protagonist. ” I bought a house with you, we settled down WITH CATS, there wasn’t much to do, so we just sat and watched the T.V. — and smoked weed”…but keep watching/listening and there is something far more sinister lurking beneath. Cue dripping bag of blood.
Watch the video below or check out Discosalt’s review of Liars Live at Bowery Ballroom in New York right Here.
TAME IMPALA: SOLITUDE IS BLISS
Discosalt video of the week 5/10/10: This weeks vid of the week comes from Aussie rockers Tame Impala for their new track “Solitude is Bliss” off Innerspeaker, which drops June 8th. A post apocalyptic themed vid directed by Megaforce for anyone who has ever felt like the world was going to end and wanted everyone else to just disappear. Sort of like Saturday night’s in New York or commuting to work on a Monday minus punching a dog, paired with the trio’s warm psychedelic hypno-groove melodic rock.
AGAINST ME: WHITE CROSSES
Florida punks Against Me are set to release their fifth full length White Crosses on June 8th, 2010 through Sire Records. Already gearing up for the new album, the band has released an EP titled I Was a Teenage Anarchist, which is available now through iTunes. White Crosses was produced by veteran producer Butch Vig (Green Day, Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins) who also produced Against Me!’s 2007 album New Wave.
The band has revealed two videos in support of the new record. The first, “Rapid Decompression,” premiered in March on Spinner.com. Shot by Vern Moen, the video documents a live show at intimate Los Angeles venue Spaceland. The second, “I Was A Teenage Anarchist,” is a fan appreciation video- portraying Against Me! fans fervently signing along and dancing to their favorite songs at a live show. The official video for “I Was A Teenage Anarchist” will premiere on Myspace this Friday May 7th. Check out the links below to watch both videos.
The band will also be on tour in support of the record throughout the spring and summer, including a two week stint with Silversun Pickups. See the tour dates below.

Before you go, another good vid for ya:
M.I.A.: BORN FREE
International cult hip-hopper M.I.A. is back with an aggressive new single “Born Free” and a shocking controversial video. Way more hardcore than “Paper Planes”, “Born Free” features heavy samples from “Ghost Rider” by Suicide, and the intense video, directed by Roman Gavras, addresses themes of racism and militarism through an ultra-violent plot. Its ginger jihad and its pretty disturbing. YouTube pulled the video yesterday for its graphic content, but M.I.A. has no intentions of censoring the video or her message to appease mainstream music fans. She responded on twitter saying: “BOOOOOOO” and has posted the video on her website. Today, it is also available again on youtube but only to registered users. Gavras will take the concept for the video even further, releasing his directorial debut “Redheads” which will draw the plot of “Born Free” into a full length feature film. You can watch the video below:
THE PASS: COLORS

KIDS OF 88: JUST A LITTLE BIT
Kids Of 88 bring the new wave electro sleeze with “Just A Little Bit”– the latest from the duo who’s music can only be described as a cross between a late 80’s police drama intro theme and a sophisticated super hussy. McCarthy rules vocals, programming and “complaining too much”. While partner-in-heartbreaking Arts, plays synths, programming and “not complaining enough”. The twosome describe their music as a “whimful combination of dirt spitting kicks and feathering grit. An overdose of nightlife; the lubricated moan of spilt vodka. The hard realization of concrete and the happiness of blurry vision. An alleyway gangbang between Grandmaster Flash and The Knack.”
The rest of New Zealand know Kids Of 88 better as architects of the Platinum selling debut single “My House,” and follow up single “Just A Little Bit” which is a top 3 seller at iTunes. And the rest of the world? A UK Ltd Ed 7” of “My House” already released through Dryden Street / East City Records, official remixes for Ke$ha & Cobra Starship , and Zane Lowe recently playing new demo “Ribbons Of Light” on his UK Radio 1 Evening Session have certainly paved the way for arresting first impressions. Having already become intimate with the chart-conquering “My House,” new single “Just A Little Bit” is currently sinking it’s fangs into your brainstem. Fans can also expect an album mid-July. Check out the video below
LIGHTSPEED CHAMPION: MADAME VAN DAMME
Despite some recent adversity, Devonte Hynes, aka Lightspeed Champion, remains focused and hardworking as ever, releasing a brand new video for Madame Van Damme (the latest single off Life Is Sweet! Nice To Meet You). And hell, if this singing thing doesnt work out, he can always team up with American Apparel for a new ad campaign. Enjoy! (photo courtesy of Ren Rox)
HEALTH: WE ARE WATER
LA Noise Rock band Health has just released a new apocalyptic gore fest music video for the single “We Are Water”, directed by Eric Wareheim. (The same Eric Wareheim from the comedy duo Tim and Eric). It might seem like an odd mix of creative talent, but Eric has also directed the video’s for FlyLo’s “Parisian Goldfish” and MGMT’s “The Youth”. Pretty weird /intense stuff here from start to finish. Its basically three and a half minutes of slow panic and gore. Health’s new album Get Color is now available on Lovepump United and the band will soon be on tour for the European Summer festival circuit. Check out a free download or the video for “Repulsion” below:
