MISSBUGS CUT OUT AND FADE OUT: THIS IS THE REMIX

Walk down the street, put on your headphones, turn on the tube, there’s an emerging trend in popular culture to remix culture. While artists have always recycled from their predecessors, there is something unique about re-mixing pop culture almost at the same time it is originally being created.  From the music re-mixes of Girl Talk, who samples current pop music, pop culture TV about… current pop culture TV, to the crude cut and paste street art ad-remixes of Poster Boy ,this  “Cut and Paste” approach to creating art is  reinventing our perceptions of pop culture that we may have not even had the time to form an initial perception on to begin with.
UK street artists MissBugs are certainly at the head of this class. Miss Bugs is actually two artists. Miss, an anonymous artist born in 1979 Pencoed Wales, and Bugs, another artist  born in 1979 Bristol.  The two appropriate pop imagery and well-known pieces of street art like Shepard Fairey’s , Obama creation, so historically quickly and frequently, to create new pop and street art, that is something familiar and yet all together different and incredibly alluring. Their new street art “Cut Out and Fade Out” incorporates elements of the street background right into the piece, paying homage to the urban environment. We think its rowdy. IM A LITTLE FAKLEMPT, TALK AMONGST YOURSELVES

I”ll give you a topic. Girl talk is neither a girl… nor a talk. Discuss…Girl Talk is actually 28 year old engineer Gregg Gillis, a solo DJ project from the city of champions who effortlessly produces dozens of hip-hop, pop and rock mashup-style remixes, using dozens of unauthorized samples from different songs to create new songs. While you might think there’s little novelty in one bearded yinzer in front of his computer playing songs that you’ve heard hundreds of times before, you might want to listen to what he has to say about his craft and give another listen. Gillis has been on the hot seat in the media for copywrite infringement but cites fair use as a legal backbone for his sampling practices and attributes most criticism to mainstream media who want to “create controversy where it doesn’t really exist.” Is remix culture a new direction in music or have artists always recycled from their predecessors? Check out the interview below for some foreplay and then move onto RiP: A remix manifesto, a documentary film about remixing culture, playing this month for free on Hulu.com.

GIRL TALK: LIVE AT THE BROOKLYN WATERFRONT

Yesterday 8/23 was by far the most hyped JellyNYC Pool Party on the Williamsburg waterfront of the year, most likely the biggest turnout and probably the most entertaining one this summer. Hell, Senator Chuck Schumer was even out on the green flying his freak flag. Fo’ reals. The man playing with the lap top is none other than Gregg Gillis aka Girl Talk, effortlessly producing dozens of hip-hop, pop and rock mashup-style remixes, using dozens of unauthorized samples from different songs to create  new songs. The New York Times Magazine has called his music “a lawsuit waiting to happen”. But, if anything, the show proved he is a one man party waiting to happen and he can draw a huge crowd. By 2pm there was already an entry line 4 blocks long and by the time he hit the stage, people were climbing fences to get in. When the crowd was welcomed on stage to dance, they broke it. First time I’ve seen a stage break while watching a DJ. Amazing.  Music went down and everyone took a breather before the show was up and running again in full force. Completely rowdy. The crowd was so tight, hot and bouncy..wait what were we talking about again? Oh yeah the show…The show was a steamy mess and when it started raining mid show, it was a welcome relief. Girl Talk himself was on point and while the novelty is really just one bearded dude in front of his computer playing songs that you’ve heard before, the mashes create totally original songs that  are both familiar and foreign at the same time sometimes even taking on new meanings…and of course its all danceable. Big ups to the party-starter.

Only two more weekends to go before the Pool Parties go back into hibernation,  so drag yer hungover badonkadonk to the waterfront. Its gonna be rowdy!

Here’s what our friends at Backseatsandbar.com had to say about their last show in Louisville:  The mash-up mastermind had a sold-out Headliners attendance to work with & he put on the party of the year. Encircled by sweaty dancing beautiful people on both the dance floor AND the stage, Greg leaned over his plastic-covered laptop and put together some of the most intriguing and inspiring mixes such as Nine Inch Nails, Kelly Clarkson, Rich Boy, Blackstreet, Weezer, AC/DC, Souja Boy, Elton John, Journey, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rick Springfield, Daft Punk, Tag Team, DJ Kool, and seemingly every other hip hop and heavy rock combination you can think of. If you’ve ever been to a Girl Talk show, you know words can’t decsribe it…it has to be experienced” Click here to see photos from the show.

Don’t miss next week: GRIZZLY BEAR, Beach House.
