Q & A WITH ARTIST SUSAN STOCKWELL AT CUCHIFRITOS

Posted in discosalt, New Art

This Wednesday, July 21 at 6PM, Cuchifritos gallery and project space is pleased to present an artists talk followed by Q & A with renowned artist Susan Stockwell who will discuss her recent projects in China, Taiwan and the US. Susan will touch upon her experiences of creating large scale installations made with recycled materials. She will also talk about the management of these projects, her collaborations with industry, how they see their role and how this varies in different countries.

Susan Stockwell lives and work in London, England. She exhibits in galleries and museums all over the world, including the V&A, London, The Neuberger Museum, New York and The National Museum of China, Beijing. She has taught extensively and taken part in residencies and projects in Europe, America and Asia. She was trained at Sheffield University and the Royal College of Art in London. Susan Stockwell’s work takes many forms from small intricate studies to large-scale installations, sculpture, drawings and collage. She is concerned with issues of ecology, geo-politics, mapping, trade and global commerce. She draws on everyday materials that are domestic, industrial and disposable, the products that pervade our everyday lives. These materials are manipulated and transformed into works of art that are extraordinary.

This event is FREE, donations are welcome.

Susan’s talk is happening during the exhibition Collected: Working Space 10 and her work aptly fits the theme of the exhibition curated by Erin Riley Lopez with artists participating on the Lower East Side-Rotating Studio Program, in Fall 09 and Spring 10, Martin Basher, Kate Burnet and Dan Woerner, Vidal Centeno,Blane De St. Croix, Natsu, Olek, Tamara Kostianovsky, Chris Yormick. EAST MEETS WEST: ZANE FIX RIDES THE TSUNAMI OF HOKUSAI’S WAVE

Posted in discosalt, New Art

I first came across Jap Pop Art last year at the Holiday Fair in Union Square where a “David Bowie/Rebel Rebel print”, caught my eye as the perfect gift for my girlfriend at the time; a huge Bowie buff.  And well, hopefully, somewhere, i like to think she is still enjoying it, remembering  better times, and hasn’t ripped it up for the way things ended. The artist behind this print (which for sentimental reasons, i still find his best) as well as a slew of others, is Zane Fix. He has been a fixture on the Art Scene in New York for several years. His unique blend of Eastern Style and technique, with Western sensibility can be seen on the streets as Fashion-Wear, and on the walls of homes and businesses all over the world. His work conjures up the spirits of 17th and 18th Century Geisha, Kabuki Actors and Samurai, blended with his own 20th Century Rock Star, high fashion energy.  Zane’s work mends the bridge between Eastern and Western pop art. Now if only his prints could mend burnt bridges.

You can email stellazane@earthlink.net for information on a (by appointment only) gallery show at their Chelsea space on July 27th, 2010 @ 7pm.

ANTHONY GORMLEY: BREATHING ROOM III

Posted in discosalt, New Art

Standing in the center of artist Anthony Gormley’s art installation “Breathing Room III” at the White Cube gallery in London, you feel as if you’re walking through a digital grid from some early 80’s computer aided drawing, or are amidst some wayward set dressing from the movie Tron.

Once the lights are turned off, you are immersed in a matrix of Photo-luminescent frames and the gallery space is bathed in a soothing blue glow.  As the tubular blue lights gradually dim, the viewer is lulled by an increasingly moody, seemingly limitless space. Their fading glow recedes until it becomes a gentle hum; then the lights are turned back on and the tubes recharge for the next round of guests, creating the perfect locale for Tron Guy to have lunch.

GIVE MEMIORS DU FRANC/BOAT TO NOWHERE SOME LEGS

Posted in discosalt, New Art

Discosalt artist Jason Woodside and his wife Amy still have a ways to go in their pledge drive to make their new project a reality…and they have some extra rad incentives to give.  Posted on the kickstarter site is a quick video they made for the project.

Following this video clip will be a longer documentary about recent works and projects that should be posted in the next week or two. Check out the video clip or some more of Jason’s work on Discosalt right HERE

Memoirs du Franc follows the story of Frank, who sets sail from the USA to France to find his long lost brother, Franc. Frank logs his journey across the Sea of Lewis in Scowla, a boat gifted by a gypsy. The book is mainly composed of pictures, with a small amount of text. My paintings are based on Frank’s travels; illustrating who he meets along the way, his struggle between dreams and reality, fear and hope.

CT’S URBAN STREET ART

Posted in discosalt, New Art

CT is an Italian street artist with a really distinct new urban signature style he is developing in his hometown of Turin. CT takes a very bold  vector approach to characters using right angles, bubbly curves and bold colors, oversimplified to exaggerate their peculiarities and create something entirely new that resemble skate company logos.  You can check out an interview with CT at ekosystem or browse some more images below:

BOAT TO NOWHERE: A NEW T-SHIRT PROJECT FROM JASON WOODSIDE

Posted in discosalt, New Art

Discosalt artist Jason Woodside is launching a new multi faceted project with no limits, to inspire people through art…and with some fun incentives – check the link below for details HERE
To be inspired by art, you have to be able to take something from it. So Jason has created something that everyone can relate to. That everyone can be a part of.   Jason has created a series of paintings and a book, Memoirs du Franc, alongside a collaborative project with his new wife ‘Boat to Nowhere’, a t-shirt company featuring design surrounding the concept that we are all looking for something. Boat To Nowhere will launch as a t-shirt company with designs hand drawn and silk-screened by Jason.

BRAD ELTERMAN: LIKE IT WAS YESTERDAY

So many photo portfolios to get excited about this week.  The latest is Brad Elterman’s photo career which started way back in 1974, when the 16 year old Brad borrowed a friends camera and snapped a shot of Dylan performing on stage.  Since then,  he’s been riding the gravy train on cheese wheels;  one sex, drugs, and rock and roll infused photo feast, where Brad has had the amazing opportunity to photograph just about  every rock/ punk/ pop legend to grace the stage and my highschool bedroom walls.  From The Faces with our man Rod,  David Bowie, Bob Dylan, The Sex Pistols, Devo, Talking Heads, The Runaways, Joan Jett, Kiss,  Blondie, the Ramones, The Who, even Sean’s favorite band Abba…the list goes on and on. This guy has serious cred. Dipping his beak into just about every rowdy Hollywood party, Brad has made stellar contributions to magazines like Rolling Stone, Creem, Circus, etc. He was eventually hired to do official publicity photos by major record labels before forming one of the first Los Angeles-based photo agencies, California Features International, Inc. which specialized in providing celebrity coverage to magazines and newspapers worldwide.

Brad’s photos provide a rare, often raunchy glimse into rock and roll history where it seems Brad is always at the right place at the right time, camera ready. There is even a  photo of  Dylan posing with a young Deniro at The Roxy in 1976! and Brad, by some alignment of the planets, was some kid with a camera. There might be a better chance of quadruplet albinos being born under a solar eclipse, than a cosmic opportunity like that happening again in a young photographers career.

You can go back to where it all began… Like it was yesterday, and browse through the past few decades in music on Brads website or check out some of our favorites below:

ANA CABALEIRO…JUST THE TIP

Posted in New Art, Photography

We don’t know too much about photographer Ana Cabaleiro, but we really dig her photostream on

Flickr . We do know, Ana has a blog (www.calmintrees.blogspot.com) and in an interview with freckledcup.com she professes her love of music, travel and taking photos in very open, arid and spacious spaces. We have so much in common. (call me?) She uses the words “freak, psych, weird, folk”  to describe her work which often focuses on the tips of heads, mountains, and trees and is inspired by American/Indian mythology, other Flickr photographers, the sun, mountains mountains mountains, trees, people free and running naked, tropical breeze, tribal drumming and people’s backs, always.  Ana’s photographs capture landscapes and people in Northern Spain, Las Bardenas Reales,  Navarra deserts, and las Médulas, amazing old ruins in León. EVERYTHING CAN BE BROKEN DOWN INTO SIMPLE GEOMETRIC SHAPES

After attending Art Center College of Design in LA, photographer Nicholas Alan Cope has worked for a number of commercial and editorial clients as well as some personal projects. His most recent work focuses on abstraction and viewer perception. “The Cope’s” images, emphasized by stellar composition and all shot in black and white, play upon the idea that everything in the world can be broken down into simple geometric shapes. Great images here. Some more goodies for you all below:
