alt-j have a new video for “Tessellate”. Directed by Alex Southam, the video is a twist on Italian Renaissance painter Raphael’s “The School of Athens,” seen through a modern day lens that Raphael may not have had in mind. “Tessellate” will appear on alt-J’s debut album, An Awesome Wave, to be released September 18th via Canvasback.
Dave Sitek of TV on the Radio has also lended his remixing hand to alt-J’s lead single, “Fitzpleasure.” Emphasizing the melodic swells while highlighting a tribal-meets-industrial beat, Sitek’s mix showcases an entirely new feel for the song while maintaining the core to alt-J’s sound which the BBC describes as “strong, addictive and enthralling, the perfect accompaniment to any mood, any moment, anywhere.”

With just a couple of weeks to go now until the release of their debut full-length Giants & Dreamers, Toronto’s Bravestation have unveiled the video for the album’s third single ‘Western Thrills’ – which, combines the bands ambient textures and spaced-out New Wave guitars with colorful harmonies and tribal percussion. Listen to the album and watch the new video after the jump.
‘Mostly No’, Milk Maid’s second album, follows hot on the heels of last year’s debut record ‘Yucca’ and finds frontman Martin Cohen cementing his reputation as a talented songwriter able to straddle the line between noise and pop whilst also expanding the sonic terrain the band covers. Adding swirls of Psychedelia to ‘Yucca’s’ crafted fuzz, the home-recorded ‘Mostly No’ explores a trans-Atlantic sound that at times simultaneously recalls the grand traditions of Manchester indie and Californian acid rock but which also sits alongside contemporaries such as Ty Segall, White Fence, and The War on Drugs.
This mix of influences comes together perfectly on ‘Summertime’, the lead single from ‘Mostly No’, which combines the haze of early Jesus and Mary Chain with the sun-bleached guitars of Roky Erickson and the classic songwriting of Jefferson Airplane. Its title and hooky chorus may suggest a carefree summer anthem, but the season simply presents the “doomed man” of the 1st verse with a “nicer time” to kill himself; Manchester miserabilism raining on a sound so associated with hippy optimism.
Milk Maid’s new album ‘Mostly No’ will be released on 9th July via FatCat Records. Pre-order the album now.
Hollywood, Florida is not your typical beach town. The buildings, diners, and of course the beach appear frozen in the 1950’s. Probably a result of the town’s population boom happening in that era, a current drive down the streets feels like your moving through an R. Crumb drawing.
Things seem exaggerated and a bit odd. The now mature population seems a caricature of their former selves. It is this strange place, lovingly dubbed Hollyweird, Florida, that the trio Beach Day calls home. Their sound is heavily influenced by their surroundings. They make new music, but it is definitely old at heart. And it’s definitely sunny, but not without some murkiness.

Lockah, a standout among the bourgeoning bass music community of Scotland, has released his debut EP on Diplo‘s Jeffree’s imprint. When U Stop Feeling Like A Weirdo & Become A Threat succinctly demonstrates his penchant for melody in the context of sub-octave bass music that defies any singular genre tag. A resident and general proponent of the fringe-city of Aberdeen (think the Milwaukee of Scotland), Lockah has helped build an organic, exceptionally self-sustaining scene with his Tuff Wax imprint that has become a glaring blip on the global radar with releases from ¥oin, Bones & Money,Grobie and others. The album features skittering drums that reference New Orleans bounce and southern trap music circa ’98, warbling synths that feel at home among boogie 12-inches of the late ’80s, and the low end that is undeniably en vogue currently. An emotive and frankly un-danceable collection of 3 tracks capped off by a breathtaking remix by Pictureplane, Lockah has created a thoughtful piece that sits among some of the most interesting and compelling releases from the post-dubstep-era UK.

Shabazz Palaces give their warped re-take on the new Heems-assisted single from Philly-based Lushlife . Check the Shabazz-appropriate title: “Hale-Bopp was the Bedouins (Shabazz Palaces remix feat the palaceer, fly guy Dai and Thadillac. mixed by Blood in palaGlow).” The original version, which can also be heard below, appears on Lushlife’s new record Plateau Vision, out now on Western Vinyl:
We have firsties on Yeasayers new track “Henrietta” for you this week. The band recently snail mailed 200 random people on their mailing list a compact disc of their new song but we wanted to make sure you had a link to get a high quality version of “Henrietta:”
MP3 Download: http://yeasayer.net/
Called a “soft launch” in the industry, the release of “Henrietta” initializes the beginning of Phase 3, as in full length #3.
We were then given Sennheisner headphones, motioned into the theater and seated in tiny “space pods” – [ side note: I probably should have worn sweatpants and not the skinniest pair of jeans I own, but I digress]. Kid Koala took the stage, accompanied by his daughter, Maple, sitting contently in the chair beside him. Then, with a giant smile, Kid Koala proceeded to blow every mind in the crowd, as he performed a magic show on his turntables that would make David Copperfield green. It is incredibly rare for a musician to give so much of themselves to the audience. While most Dj’s and musicians stand on stage trying to act as cool as humanly possible, Kid Koala appeared with no pretense; more like a friend – sitting in his living room – doing what he enjoys doing most. This was what made the show such an awesome experience.
I talked to Kid Koala a.k.a Eric San after the show and he let me in on some details for the upcoming Deltron 3030 Event II – the sequel to the legendary Deltron 3030 album- which will be released in July, as well as, 12 Bit Blues another album coming out on Ninja Tune in the fall.
Here is a song called “3 Bit Blues” which appears on the upcoming album 12 Bit Blues.
You can also listen to a couple songs off the Space-Cadet album below [disclaimer: the tracks on this album are so relaxing, I haven’t been able to make it through the album’s entirety without being lulled to sleep].
If you have the opportunity to check out Kid Koala’s “Space-Cadet Headphone Experience” show, you should not think twice. I left the show feeling so inspired, that I immediately went home and turned on my MPC [MIDI Production Center]. After a 2 month creative drought, I quickly chopped up some samples, remembering how good it feels to create music you can call your own.

Since Tame Impala guitarist Nick Albrook is also Pond’s chief songwriter and there are a few lineup overlaps, comparisons between the two Australian neo-psych pop groups are inevitable. Unlike Innerspeaker, super-producer Dave Fridmann doesn’t man the boards on this one, but the farmhouse production is affected with virtually the same tape echo, leslie speaker wobble, and vintage guitar tones. This puts the two on the same sonic playing field, but because of Pond’s willingness to take risks, Beard, Wives, Denim doesn’t feel distinctive or as firmly indebted to classic psychedelic music. With influences that range from David Crosby to Spiritualized, Pond’s songs are widely varied. “Fantastic Explosion of Time” is a grungy, garage rock fireball; “You Broke My Cool” injects ’50s style into ’70s glam; “Elegant Design” is a sly homage to funk, sung in a womanly falsetto, and “Moreno’s Blend” is a raw, acoustic porch jam. Every melody is blanketed in psychedelic sounds, giving a unified feel to the record, even if the music isn’t always easily containable. However, Pond is at their best when they go full force into watercolor psych, like in the fantastically trippy “When it Explodes,” and “Sorry I Was Under the Sky.” These songs could be B-sides to Innerspeaker. The only difference is that Tame Impala seem completely sincere about returning to the late ’60s/early ’70s. Pond is like an incorrigible younger sibling that is determined to learn by making mistakes. Both groups’ records are essential. [itunes]

You’ll start out in a university lecture hall, and you might end up making out with Amber Schaefer from Starfawn.
Taken from the debut album ‘Hollandaze’ – a grimy, gum-splattered ménage of surf-gaze, punk and lo-fi – ‘Busted Lip’ is the latest single from noisy Canadian’s Odonis Odonis. Originally a solo project for prolific songwriter/ bandleader Dean Tzenos, Odonis Odonis has in the last year also become a formidable live concern. Based in Toronto, Odonis Odonis make killer hook-driven tunes that hark back to the classic ‘80s sounds of The Jesus & Mary Chain, Pixies, Big Black and The Cure. Like a good post-modernist, however, these influences colour but do not define Odonis Odonis.
Compiled from a wealth of material written and home-recorded between January 2009 and September 2010, Dean recorded virtually all of ‘Hollandaze’ alone in a tiny home studio, writing two or three songs a day – generally starting with drum programming – before adding bass then guitar and vocals, experimenting with a host of different styles.

Meshing dancey, synth beats with an ethereal range of vocals, XYLOS, a five piece outfit from NYC is quickly gaining momentum both online and offline. The band has been gathering fans and praise for their lush, ’80s-inspired pop sound and star member, Monika Heidemann who boasts many talents including that of a singer, a multi-instrumentalist, and a sultry indie front woman with silky, smooth vocals. The group will also be headlining in NYC at Mercury Lounge on 3/2 with indie-openers Beacon and Grimace Federation and then heading down to Austin for SXSW!
Watch the new video from Tearist for the single “Unarmed” directed by Sean Stout.
Over the last two years Tearist has become one of the most notorious and vital bands in the new underground pulsing through Los Angeles. Building on songs driven by intense vocals and synths, the duo’s performances are known for being deeply physical and direct events. Yasmine Kittles sings from the depths of her body/soul and moves in a near-transfixed state, using scrap metals to scrape rhythm from the ground beneath her. All the while, as if telepathically linked, William Strangeland uses sputtering, cracked synthesizers to create shimmering melodic lines along rumbling interlocked beats and rhythms. Their songs flow and surge, building thick layers of analog sound and noise, often leaving wrecked PA’s in their wake.
With just a week left before Sleigh Bells release their sophomore album, Reign of Terror (out February 21), the duo is streaming the new record in its entirety on NYTimes.com.
As an added bonus, Sleigh Bells will livestream their NYC show on The Bowery Presents Live Youtube Channel this Friday, February 17th at 10 p.m. EST .
