Cat Power : Sun

Rating: 5/5 Stars

Label: Matador

Longtime Miami indie Goddess Chan Marshall was born again in 2012 with a short, cropped, breakup haircut and the first Cat Power album of original material in over six years. Transformed by her struggles as an artist,  Marshall revisits her roots and comes into her own with this collection of moody, bluesy,  songs layered by drum machines, synths and beautiful background vocals, which help showcase Marshall’s seductive, whispered croons and clever wordplay. If that isn’t enough,  Marshall raps on the album and there is a surprise appearance from Iggy pop in the middle of  the ten-minute Velvet Underground homage  ”Nothin But Time”.

Video – Van She : Jamaica

Van She‘s new album ‘Idea of Happiness‘ is practically the musical genotype of the very Caribbean itself, almost as if Bob Marley were taken in and raised by a ragtag group of synth-addicted 80’s runaways. Watch Van She traipse around the song’s namesake in the official video for ‘Jamaica’, second single off the album. Directed by Mike Piscitelli.

‘Idea of Happiness’ is out now through Modular Recordings, get it from iTunes / Van She Store / JB Hifi. The Jamaica Remixes EP is out now, featuring remixes from Unicorn Kid, Mad Professor, L-Vis 1990, Plastic Plates, Riva Starr and a special one from Van She themselves, grab it on iTunes.

The Presets’ Julian says of the video “it’s both dark and moody yet also joyous and uplifting. We’re so lucky to work with such talented directors like Abteen who manage to add extra layers of depth, beauty and meaning to songs we already love.”

Album Stream – Alt-J : An Awesome Wave

alt-J (∆)’s name takes a little explaining. Pronounced “alt-J”, the delta sign is created when you hold down the alt key on your computer keyboard and punch ‘J’ on a Mac computer. The symbol has a deeper meaning for the band, as guitarist/bassist Gwil Sainsbury notes, “in mathematical equations it’s used to show change,” and the band’s relatively new name came at a turning point in their lives.

On the heels of a tour announcement and following a remix by TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek, alt-J have shared a remix of “Fitzpleasure” by The Internet of Odd Future (Syd the Kyd and Matt Martians) which is available for streaming and free download via the SoundCloud link below. Support continues to surround all things alt-J with the addition of “Tessellate” to BBC’s Radio 1 A-List, following a premiere of the music video with Noisey.
