The latest band to drop onto the discosalt band radar is London pop-rock maestros, Life In Film. They’ve been making a name for themselves in the UK spreading their infectious energy, jangly Smith-like riffs and resolute belief that they are poised to become the soundtrack of conviction for a disenfranchised Britain (and hopefully the good ol US of A), arousing a generation already alienated by a rampant social war declared by David Cameron’s corrupt coalition.
Wearing influences and channeling attitude from The Smiths and Joy Division through to The Strokes, they exhibit an infectious immediacy presented with genuine ingenuity, and their melodic mercurial urban anthems show hints of stylish Americana, dragging the heart’s emotions from worn, torn to splendid, all firmly rooted in a UK soil still piss-stained by the explosion of punk and New Wave.
Since Tyondai Braxton left the experimental rock outfit Battles to work on his solo projects, the remaining trio of Ian Williams, Dave Konopka, and drummer John Stanier, are back with a new poppy summertime video for “Ice Cream” off their upcoming album Gloss Drop, dropping June 7 via Warp. The video directed and produced by CANADA is heavy on nude bathing women eating ice cream, women licking roller skates, pinecones, door handles and a schmorgesborg of beach karate.
Moon Duo, the soulfully noisy psychedelic space-rock side-project from Wooden Shjips guitarist Erik Johnson and keyboardist Sanae Yamad, have a new single and a new video for “Mazes”. Like so many other great artists from Bowie to Liars, the duo transplaned their recording process to Berlin for this album. But, while you might expect a more darker sound, “Mazes” surprisingly moves the band towards a more accessible pop-driven sound, which works in their favor. Watch the video for “Mazes” directed by band-mate Sanae Yamada right here:
One of our favorite new bands, Yuck has a new video for the crunchy distorted “Get Away”, directed by “Michael”. With obvious nods to Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, Pavement and My Bloody Valentine, Yuck takes different elements of shoegaze, noise pop, punk and dream pop to form their garage rock aesthetic and undeniably one of the best albums to be released this year. Follow the band on the road, as they pick up a nymph-like naked female hitchhiker with some serious fat in the can…crisco that is, or maybe olive oil ( hopefully). Things get weird, and greasy.
Director Patrick Daughters (Feist‘s “1234″) has a new video for LA noise-punk duo No Age for their single “Fever Dreaming” off last year’s Everything In Between. As the band chills out in a warehouse, the room begins to close in on them.
We are excited to share the first official music video from Small Black’s new album New Chain. While filming the above video for “Photojournalist,” Small Black and director Yoonha Park, played with the idea of photo vs. memory. The band and director spent a full day shooting with one actress and followed up a few weeks later with a different actress, attempting to recreate the exact same shoot from memory without referring to the older footage. The band is on tour with Sun Airways, Cults, Toro Y and hitting South by Southwest this year. Check out the video and tour dates below:

Last year, the Brooklyn electro crash pop outfit Sleigh Bell’s topped some of our top 2010 albums of the year with Treats. Now the buzz-worthy band has a stylish new noirish road trip video for “Rill Rill” from director John Watts. Watch as Alexis Krauss tosses bandmate Derek Miller from a moving car, then heads back to highschool to pose for some strange yearbook photos. Grab some freebies, then check out the hype after the jump.
Aussie psych-rockers Tame Impala rock out in the new Clemens Habicht’s video for ”Expectation”. The track is off this year’s Innerspeaker, which is easily one of the best albums of 2010. After their last video for “Lucid”, the band not only continues to explore their psychedelic sound, but some tricked out camera devices, using a fish-eye panoramic effect that keeps the camera spinning around the band for the duration of the video. Check it out below:
Discosalt Video of the Week 10/25/10: Remember Sammy Jankis. Don’t let A Classic Education’s video for ”I Lost Time” pass you by. The song about growing up, being alone and feeling like you have lost time was inspired by the life of Clive Wearing; a British musicologist who suffered from “Memento Syndrome”. A condition of both acute and long-lasting amnesia which rendered Wearing unable to make new memories, spending every day ‘waking up’ every 20 seconds. In the video, director Enrico Boccioletti, plays with the idea of losing time, hashing together a collage of old images and bleeding effects that play out like a faded memory. Now… where was I? hmm, I don’t feel drunk.
Discosalt Video of The Week 10/17/10: Director Ricardo Rivera of KLIP Collective brings us a new video treatment for Sun Airway’s single “Put the Days Away” from the forthcoming album, Nocturne of Exploded Crystal Chandelier. Night has fallen upon Philadelphia, and our heroine is making her way through the streets on her bicycle. Something is wrong, and the sight of happy couples are certainly not helping. She arrives home, soaked from the rain and begins to put the day away. Her unconscious mind becomes animated for us, a gorgeous combination of visual projections previously seen for Sun Airway’s “Oh, Naoko,” “Infinity,” and “Waiting On You.”
