GREAT MOMENTS IN MUSTACHE MUSIC HISTORY: 1985: PARTY ALL THE TIME

1985:  Beating out New Coke, Nintendo and crack as one of ‘85’s most addictive indulgences, Eddie Murphy and Rick James’ double-stache hit wonder, ” Party All the Time,” marked a bittersweet milestone in Mustache Music History. Fans of the premier ‘70s soul-glow sex balladeer and Hollywood’s Goldenchild doubled their pleasure with not one, but two radiant mexi-soul chevrons performing side-by-side in pop funk fusion. Not since the 1970s had multiple stacheos so successfully joined forces to make collaborative music history. Sadly, the double facial hair formula was too much for some and proved career-killing for Murphy. Not only did it make VH1’s and Blender’s lists of  “50 Worst Songs of All-Time,” but Murphy’s ‘89 solo-stache follow-up anthem, “Put Your Mouth On Me,” could never touch the success of PATT, sinking him into further music obscurity.

JOHN OATES TRIPLE THREAT

Let’s face it, Daryl Hall was always second fiddle to the real “rock and soul” partners, John Oates…and his glorious stache. With Mustache March upon us, Discosalt has suggested some ways for celebrating Oates and his all-too-friendly nose neighbor this month.

The Bird and the Bee are set to release Interpreting The Masters Volume 1: A Tribute To Daryl Hall And John Oates, on EMI’s Blue Note Records on March 23. The album, a love letter to famed “rock and soul” duo Hall & Oates, will features eight classic covers, carefully deciphering Hall & Oates complex musical craft, (hand claps) thus heightening the appreciation for Hall & Oates’ longstanding discography, which, if you aren’t familiar with…you’re out of touch!

The duo will also showcase the record with a performance at The El Rey in Los Angeles on March 5th.  For those of you not located in the Los Angeles area for this Friday’s the bird and the bee show at the El Rey Theatre, fear not!  The show will be live broadcast on Livestream at 8pm PST/11pm EST.

Next up… Stay tuned to Discosalt this month for ANOTHER FREE MUSIC GIVEAWAY PACKAGE featuring The Bird and the Bee: Interpreting The Masters Volume 1: A Tribute To Daryl Hall And John Oates. Coming Soon!

Still hungry for more Oates and his mouth brow?

The duo are fighting crime in an animated series, ” J-Stache,” from the kids over at FunnyorDie.com. They have somehow convinced the real John Oates‘ into portraying himself, while comedian Dave Attell plays his crime-fighting mustache. Ride the stache and enjoy!

IT’S OFFICIALLY MUSTACHE MARCH!

discosalt magazine-mustache-march

The Mustache has always been a politically-charged form of expression. It’s been banned by kings, forbidden by employers and used as a form of social protest.  While the popularity of this once glorious grooming practice may have reached a low point in the U.S. (unless of course you live in Williamsburg, Brooklyn), Discosalt has officially earmarked the entire month of March in celebration of the flavor-saver.

Originally introduced to lengthen the partying and festivities ofDirty Stache December, which celebrates the mexi and is an offshoot of the original No Shave November, DSD served as an impetus for the introduction of other facial hair celebrations, like Soup Catcher September. Whatever you call the stache, tache, tash, mo, mouth brow, lady tickler, trash stash, crumb catcher, fanny duster, pushbroom, nose bug, cheech or the selleck sidekick, Mustache March is a month in which men, women and Discosalt come together to celebrate the nose neighbor.  Every week this month we will feature some mustachioed treats as we look at the mustache in art and music. So check back with us as the tribute continues.

DRINK THE RING: BERLIN

dtr

Some friends of ours (founder of berlin loves you ) have started a rather intriguing ‘art project’ (for those who consider drinking a proper art form). They have documented their endeavors in video, photograph and drunken journal format at www.drinkthering.com . Check it.

The “ring” that the Berlin subway car takes is a total of 27 stations with each stop requiring the consumption of a drink. The rules are as follows:

1. One beer per stop

2. Thirty (30) minutes time limit per stop (time starts running at arrival and stops when participants step onto the platform for the next ring bahn)

3. Beer will be purchased at bars, cafes, or kneipe

4. Failure to complete your beer before the stopping of the train at the following station means you are no longer an official participant

5. Formal wear obligatory

Check back in the future as these guys intend to take on several major cities across the globe.

POSTER BOY AND NIHALANI BOX IT OUT

Poster Boy_Aakash Nihalani_Discosalt

NYC street artists Aakash Nihalani and the anonymous “Poster Boy ” have been late night collaborating on a series of subway graffiti projects that showcase their common love for absurdity. They are being torn down as fast as they go up, so if you spot one, snap a pic and send it to us: care of Discosalt.
