MINIMAL TV POSTERS

Vienna, Austria is home to a lot of really interesting graphic designers and artists. Albert Exergian, a Vienna native, recently created a simple poster project to visually capture the essence of 27 TV series ,through very minimalist design.  We think he did a really great job but surprisingly there aren’t more Hasselhoff series in the mix.  The Hoff is huge there. We want to see a poster for Baywatch!

ALEX ROMAN: THE THIRD & THE SEVENTH

My friend Toralf sent me this short film by Alex Roman today that is simply amazing.  Watch it for yourself and note that it is nearly (“There are a few non-CG elements in the shortfilm: photographer [shot on greenscreen], pigeons, timelapsed growing flowers, flying airplane and sky backgrounds.”) entirely computer generated. If you still don’t believe it watch the compositing breakdown below.

Compositing Breakdown (T&S) from Alex Roman on Vimeo.

A FULL-CG animated piece that tries to illustrate architecture art across a photographic point of view where main subjects are already-built spaces. Sometimes in an abstract way. Sometimes surreal.

While discosalt.com is in the process of getting a serious face-lift, the new look might not suggest our appreciation for minimalist design…well at least not just yet.  So if the site starts to give you a seizure, just try to focus on this new installation work from Ester Stocker which transforms space using minimal elements. Stocker uses  black electrical tape and foam core to successfully create space that shifts our perceptions. “Stocker’s work demonstrates a fascination with human perception and cognition, and judging by the title, “What I don’t Know About Space”, she doesn’t claim to understand how it all works, which is a refreshing to hear from an artist.” Stocker has installations running in London, Vienna, Brussels and Eindhoven.

WHAT’S THIS PIG BOARD PIECE OF SH*T?

mwm_x_almond_corduroy_1

That’s, ahh… that’s a surfboard all right! A series of surfboards actually, designed by Matt dubbya Moore, founder of MWM Graphics, a design and illustration studio based in Portland, Maine. These boards might not fly with Warchild but we still think they are pretty radical and would get Johnny Utah’s stamp of approval. They are certainly an upgrade from that ’57 chevy sled he was sweet on. Even Rick Kane might make Chandler proud with one of these designs, Barney. It’s like Barno… Barnyard… a haole to the max, a kook in and out of the water. Yeah? MWM recently collaborated with ALMOND surfboards and the CORDUROY gallery to create this unique series of  Almond Lumberjack Long Surfboards that feature WMW’s own signature retro design. The perfect fusion of form meets function.  Matt works across disciplines, from colorful digital illustrations in his signature “Vectorfunk” style, to free form watercolor paintings, to massive aerosol murals and more functional art like hand-painted bike frames, tees and cycling caps.  These boards will make their maiden voyage at  CONVERGENCE, a collaborative painting series by: Kate Cleaves and Matt W. Moore , on September 4th at 6:00 pm at the Corduroy Gallery,59 Market Street, Portland, ME. Surfing’s the source man… swear to God. Stay loose, haole.

DANIEL LIBESKIND TOWER FOR NYC

Daniel Libeskind‘s proposed residential tower at One Madison Avenue in the middle of New York City seems to be gaining wide praise in the architecture community already. The 54-story luxury tower stands over 900 feet in Manhattan just east of Madison Square Park. Straddling the existing structure (just next to Pierre L. LeBrun’s Metropolitan Insurance Company Tower; built in 1909 and seen above) Libeskind’s tower is accented with terracing roof gardens that provide plenty of green space for it’s occupants. Though Libeskind’s office is located in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan the tower, if built, will be his first project in New York City aside from the master-planning of the World Trade Center site.

Branch-like columns make their way up the tower making for an impressively unique structure protected by a sleek and rounded glass facade.  It is not yet fully approved but the tower promises to greatly improve NYC’s skyline at a time when many high-rise projects in the City don’t seem quite fit for the challenge. We folks here at Discosalt give it the ‘go ahead’.

Chanel Mobile Art

CHANEL MOBILE ART AT CENTRAL PARK NYC

Chanel Mobile Art Gallery in Central Park- Zaha Hadid

Our friend Lily Dong recently checked out Zaha Hadid’s Contemporary Art Container for Chanel at Central Park. Here’s what she had to say:

2008.11.22 would’ve been just another lovely brunch sunday for me but a friend and i decided to brave the cold at 8am to wait in the standby line for nearly 2 long nippy hours at central park.  the rumsey playfield, located at 70th street and 5th avenue is currently staging a product of the crossover of architecture and fashion, entitled mobile art.  it showcases how the futuristic fluid architecture of zaha hadid and the uber wealthy chanel label collaborate to house 20 original art installations – all inspired by the 2.55 quilted bag in some degree…umm…right. the whole experience is very specific and surreal.  once you go in, you’re given a set of headphones and the narrator, actress jeanne moreau, of this so-called soundwalk concept, conceived by stephan crasneanscki, dictates the next 30 minutes of your life, telling you where to go and when to go.  even though the circulation is composed of fluid lines as a result of the architecture, i could not help but feel confronted of being restricted in a series of open spaces.  however, each space is very unique and interesting, makes me feel as if i’m in a different world where time suspends in space.

the art is very intensely visual, relying heavily on lighting, color and the notion of texture.  my favorite is the Argentinian artist leandro erlich’s “le trottoir” 2006-07 video installation.  a city’s facade is projected on a wall and all of its nuances of daytime and of nighttime are reflected on this pool of water in front of it.  i especially feel this particular powerful work really relates to the subtle, understatement of the fashion house, known for its simple and yet sophisticated LBDs. a question came to my mind when i read about the chanel house finding this  need to redefine “modern” functionality in metropolises such as hong kong, tokyo and new york with its renown 2.55 handbag, the star of this show.  nodoubt chanel’s intention of making this bag versatile for both day and night and merging luxury with functionality is a move towards the modern direction, it is way too small for a woman to carry the day’s necessities.  big bags are popular in the city for a reason.   it holds everything for a woman who’s constantly on the go, kinda like a minisuitcase. just look at the streets of nyc and its women with their oversize handbags.

alright, going back to architecture, no matter how much zaha and karl lagerfield insist that it provides a cohesiveness to the landscape, just the material of choice for this architectural piece is out of context.  its futuristic appearance makes it look like a spaceship that has landed in the middle of the rumsey playfield. the concept of a mobile structure tests its validity in the context of the cities it visits.  hong kong is a very different city from tokyo as tokyo is a very different city from new york therefore, it’s a challenge to create a piece of architecture that can transform itself to become a part of the landscape.  so i would dare say maybe it’s more about the contrast that makes this such a phenomenally new experience for the cities it visits and provokes this cross pollination of cultures.

if you have not yet checked out this amazing experience, what are you waiting for?  go!  the nyc life of the mobile art is slated for the duration of october 20th thru novmber 9th.  where to catch the mobile art next?  future destinations to be continued: london, moscow and ending where else but the fashion capital of the world – paris (2010)

Daniel Libeskind’s Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto is up for nomination of a 4th Annual people’s choice PUG Award for architecture. PUG Ed is an outreach program designed to educate and provoke thought about architecture, planning and design amongst Toronto’s youth.

Having been to Libeskind’s new museum addition in Toronto this past fall we insist that Daniel takes the cake. And eats it too.
