Today’s suggested listening: Forer – the self-funded, second EP from Steel Phantoms. Following up their eponymous debut, the unsigned, Brooklyn indie trio deliver yet another solid, sometimes quirky, no-frills progressive indie rock album. Expect crisp guitars, beautifully layered vocal harmonies, masterfully placed moog and a subdued intensity and introspection reminiscent of The Modern Lovers and Wolf Parade. THE EXPERIMENT: AN EXPLORATION INTO CREATING ELECTRONIC MUSIC
Mysterious 80′s synth lord Teeel wrote a bunch of songs back in 2008 under the alias “mimeo”. The album is an exploration into creating electronic music. At the time, he was still learning about synthesis and using different techniques to compose music, hence the name “the experiment”. You’ll hear hints of TEEEL mixed with downtempo and chill electronica. Enjoy this free download. [DOWNLOAD]

STREAM THE NEW CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH ALBUM: HYSTERICAL

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah has come a long way since 2005, when the DIY group first recorded and released their debut album all out of the apartment of bassist Tyler Sargent.
The band is back now with their third album Hysterical, marking their best work to date. ”Hysterical Balances the exuberance of the band’s first album with beauty and reflection, most notably in “In a Motel” and “Adams Plane.” But it wouldn’t be a Clap Your Hands Say Yeah record without that bounce; that “grab your buddy and dance with unhinged joy” emotion that’s all overHysterical. It’s feeling I thought we’d lost, but that the band has once again found, just in time.” (NPR Music)

RICHARD RICH: SICK & TIRED

Brooklyn based rapper Richard Rich just put out Get Your Money Vol. 2: Sick & Tired, his 4th product in a little over a year. Sick & Tired is yet another hand-crafted and perfected piece of work that is accurately described as full of “classic/quirky rap instrumentals, motivational messages, obscure rock samples, introspective thoughts on the human condition, hood ass shit, bittersweet hope”. I’m sticking with hood ass shit.
Richard Rich’s vocals cut through the instrumentals like a knife delivering witty and intelligent yet often silly and fart-jokey rhymes that leave you wondering “Is he really serious?” But given the quality with which he delivers you know he must be.
A while back we posted a write-up on DJ/Producer Max Tannone that included his collaboration with Richard Rich on Selene, a splicing of samples from Clint Mansell’s original score for the Duncan Jones film MOON.

BAND RADAR: THE MORNING CLOUDS
With lush guitars, and hushed vocals The Morning Clouds are the perfect soundtrack for a foggy drive. The Morning Clouds consists of Josh Wambeke, who’s best known for his work with a band called Fell. Wambeke’s upcoming release Wasted Youth Blues EP is self produced and recorded, showcasing one complex and lush piece of work. Although Wambeke slinks into a bedroom-pop aesthetic on The Wasted Youth Blues, there’s still enough cosmic dust left over from Fell’s travels to the edge of the universe to coat The Morning Clouds’ songs and cast an ethereal shimmer over that comfortably familiar classic pop framework. Just like the Ramones roughed it up with punk and JAMC’s C86 aesthetic yanked it into the new wave, The Wasted Youth Blues filters the sound through Wambeke’s spaced-out sensibilities. The Morning Clouds first release through Lefse Records is the gem-worthy EP.
Lefse Records will be releasing the debut EP Wasted Youth Blues on October 11th from Denver’s The Morning Clouds.

We have a new remix for you from Papercutz: This song is a remix of the title track from Jason Grier’s and Ramona Gonzalez’s (aka Nite Jewel) “Heart Shaped E.P.” Jason Grier is also sharing the first proper release from his (anti)love duets series. The new Heart Shaped EP collects five songs Grier penned for Ramona Gonzalez of Nite Jewel, including studio versions of much blogged-about tracks “Heart Shaped Rock” and “Nothing Nothing”, plus four previously unheard jams. The 35 minute EP zeros in on “smash hit” grooves of the high broadcast age. Post-freestyle, slam jam, and daytime drama soundscapes wash over alien musings on love.
