DEATH IN VEGAS ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM

Death in Vegas - Cat Stevens

Following up the 2004 release of Satan’s Circus the infamously dark electronic act Death In Vegas has announced a new album entitled Trans-Love Energies to be released September 12th on Drone Records.

Frontman Richard Fearless had been living in Brooklyn for some part of the last 7 years studying film and photography, a time during which he formed the New York band Black Acid. After returning to the UK in 2009 he produced albums for Dark Horses and Von Haze and remixed the likes of Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Hurts, The Kills and The Horrors.

RE-MASH ARTIST MAX TANNONE AT IT AGAIN: GHOSTFUNK

NYC re-mash artist Max Tannone, aka DJ Minty Fresh Beats, has been at it for a while and continues to combine full length albums of remixed music of artists, often from different genres, such as Mos Dub (Mos Def / Reggae remixes) and Jaydiohead (Jay-Z + Radiohead). Think Girl Talk minus the ADHD, Danger Mouse plus the Ritalin.

His latest release, Ghostfunk, is a combination of “Wu-Tang member Ghostface Killah with the sounds of vintage African funk, high-life, and psychdelic rock.” See how that works? The concept is nothing new but with each new combination comes a curiosity to hear the tracks we know reinvented and, perhaps, into something more exciting then the first time around.

Metronomy: The Bay

Last month we posted Erol Alkan’s remix of Metronomy (Metronomy – The Bay (Erol Alkan’s Extended Rework) PREVIEW) which we thought was awesome. The fellows have since put out a video that is on par, with both the song and the remix, for the original of the single,  The Bay, off the 2011 Barclayard Mercury Prize ‘Album of the Year’ entitled “The English Riviera”. Vote for the album here (no login required).

The video is set in Torquay, Devon and it is filled with the finer things in life – boats, bikini babes, and bass – appropriately, the bay life. Metronomy has slowly become the band that doesn’t disappoint.

The Bay is directed by David Wilson, who has some pretty cool work to his credit himself, check out his web site.

NEW ALBUM FROM TUNNELS: THE BLACKOUT

Tunnels: The Blackout

Nicholas Bindeman wears many hats under different names. This one is Tunnels, his solo endeavor, but other projects include Eternal Tapestry and Jackie-O Motherfucker. The album, and further reinforced by the video for Crystal Arms, is a minimalistic electronic record but with pop overtones that gives the feeling of being in a David Lynch movie with a soundtrack by a lovechild of Joy Division and Kontour. The Blackout is a somewhat dark record that would maybe stray off most radars were it not for the pop hooks that subtly drive the tracks back into the headlights. The album will drop August 16.

 

“In the spring of 2008, Bindeman began playing live sets singing over a four track recorder. His initial output, like a dirtier, playful Suicide, with backing tracks acting as vehicles for live exploration. Bindeman would often go into a frenzied state, mumbling and slurring through slapdash songs. These performances gradually evolved into more cohesive and clean music and recording became the focus of the project, writing material through the recording process and eventually falling victim to the lure of pop.”

With a slew of remixes for Temper Trap, Ladytron, Yeasayer Crystal Fighters & Digitalism the Belgian duo Hermanos Inglesos have already attracted a cult-like following of fans. The electro rockers have announced they will be releasing their 3rd single ‘Funky Dandy‘ on September 5th. ‘Funky Dandy’ is the follow up to their second single ‘Take Me Down’ and their first single ‘Wanderland‘, the feather-full video that you can watch below.

Film-maker Brad Kremer has put together a really nice time lapse piece of Japan titled “Hayaku: A Time Lapse Journey Through Japan”. ‘Hayaku’ in Japanese means “Hurry Up” – which seems appropriate given the speed of the film and recent catastrophic events which occurred in the country.

Black Casino and the Ghost are guitarist Ariel Lerner, vocalist/pianist  Elisa  Zoot and drummer Andy Treacey.  Formed in London in 2010 the band writes music about “isolation, disorientation, lust, and how to fly a plane through turbulence without spilling your coffee.” They have recently put out a solid track, Falling Into Pieces,  that will likely be soon released as a single.

Galactaron have recently released their debut self-titled album which documents the band’s arrival to planet earth and their meeting of Emily Wong, a Chinese-American and their first human. Emily Wong joins the intergalactic band members named Singer, Bass, Guitar and Drums. While it is not clear who is playing what instrument, Galactaron takes an interplanetary roadtrip while pumping out hearty synth and bass driven tracks that seem to fall somewhere in the realm of Gorillaz, Daft Punk and The Flaming Lips.

I have to admit the concept album sparks doubt in me like a knee-jerk reaction. While I think that is only because I tend to really love a lot of the concept albums I have been exposed to – from Bowie to The Flaming Lips, to Sgt. Pepper and to, Lady’s and Gentleman, The Alan Parsons Project. The problem lies in the expectation of a great album that isn’t just beating out a theme for the sake of making a concept album. Far to many concept albums have been nothing more than this, but lucky for us Galactaron has avoided that clutch and produced a genuinely good album where the concept is used as a vehicle and not a device.
