SLO-MO, LO-FI GLOOM AND DOOM: NEW SALEM PODCAST
Midwestern trio Salem is a gothy/witch-house/dream-crunk/drag-step/crack-core Michael Stipe-endorsed post-juke band from no place in particular. Basically, they’ve become one of those bands that can be whatever you want them to be; the notion of what exactly Salem is threatens to engulf what Salem’s music actually sounds like. Listening to them is a total trip. Read more about the band in the XLR8R September/October Salem cover story:http://www.xlr8r.com/features/2010/09/midnight-mass-bewitching-midwest

INFINITE ARMS:A SHORT BY DIRECTOR MARK PELLINGTON FOR BAND OF HORSES
Does true love exist? Director Mark Pellington (“Henry Poole Is Here,” “Arlington Road”, U2′s “One”, Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy”) who recently shot the Band of Horses video for “Laredo” ponders the question in this really moving little short called “Infinite Arms”.
The people you see in the film are all locals from the area where they had been simultaneously shooting “Laredo” and they open up on camera about “love, in whatever form… pain, forgiveness, survival,” there in the desert.
“Thematically, I was interested in exploring desire and forgiveness, memory and home, decay and grief. I live for this stuff and needed to get out of LA and connect with reality,” the director explained. “The band’s music is twangy and aching so the desert felt right. I needed to see and talk to people, humanity.”
Pellington does a great job of this; complimenting these bitter sweet stories with some really beautiful imagery that brings new depth to the Band of Horses song. If you are a fan of Pellington, Band of Horses, lament lost love or daydream about finding love, you should watch this below (might take a little while to load):

The collection includes a really unusual eclectic mix of shorts from Spike Jonze, David O. Russell, Miguel Arteta, David Byrne and a slew of other filmmakers. If you haven’t checked out any of the 15 issues out yet, you can preview two of the shorts below.
This first short starring John C. Reilly “Are You The Favorite Person of Anybody” was directed by Miguel Arteta. Written by Miranda July. From Wholphin Issue No. 1

AEROPLANE TO RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM: WE CAN’T FLY
Within the past three years, Aeroplane, a Belgium based music producer has been garnering praise in the dj world, creating original rock-disco remixes for some of the most respected names in the genre. He has reworked songs from Chromeo, MGMT, Lindstrom & Cristabelle, Friendly Fires, and Grace Jones into fully orchestrated rock-disco epics. It’s somewhere along the lines of Electric Light Orchestra meets Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon meets Abba but that could sit comfortably on an 80′s movie soundtrack. Jangly guitars, Studio 54 beats, hair ballad piano intros, im not sure if its 1978? 1986? 2010?
But now Aeroplane is bringing us more original music with the debut full-length album We Can’t Fly on Ultra Records, coming digitally September 28th and in stores November 30th. Recorded in multiple locations in the US and Europe, We Can’t Fly finds its groove in a multitude of different genres pieced together to create a sonic vison vastly expansive and truly original. Aeroplane’s production is daring but familiar, laying pristine vocals from the likes of Au Revoir Simone, Sky Ferreira and Jonathan Jeremiah, over lush and soulful dance-pop instrumentation.
Check for live Aeroplane dates in multiple cities across North America this fall – more info to come!

NEW EP FROM BOTANY: FEELING TODAY
Feeling Today is Spencer Stephenson’s debut release under the Botany moniker. The culmination of years of assembling music, this EP, and his forthcoming full-length, flow with a transcendental radiance. Under the gauzy patina of decades-old samples, this Texan sound-sculptor masterfully merges the past and the present, the earthly and the infinite.
Spencer recalls recording a casio keyboard onto cassette-tape at the age of 4, and becoming hooked on the simple idea that he could capture sounds and share them with those around him. Now 22, he’s still at it, playing instruments and stitching sounds together in his home atop a hill, surrounded by trees, fringed by the wide Texas horizon.
He explores the cosmic nexus of shimmering psychedelia, blissed-out pop, and instrumental hip-hop, as he turns recycled sounds into something thoroughly modern. For Spencer there’s a therapeutic value in reconfiguring the “noise” of an information-dense consumer culture into something nourishing and honest. He collects artifacts…scavenged bits of ephemera…all of the organic and inorganic matter that passes through our hands and heads everyday and he uses them to build something deeply personal. Ultimately, he reminds us that the natural world we are a part of is one of boundless wonder and color.

WE ARE ANIMAL ANNOUNCE UK RELEASE FOR IDOLISE
When We Are Animal put their album together earlier this year little did they know that it would be picked up by Japanese label Art Union. Add to this a distribution deal with Cargo and we now have an official UK release date for their exhilarating debut. Idolise hits the shops on the 25th October and is a mixture of rousing hooks, weird sounds, ear-grabbing riffs and a nice bit of cowbell.
We Are Animal are natives of North Wales and can be found in their natural habitat at the foot of Mount Snowdon. It is here that they trek off into the wilds to walk, contemplate and put together the music and melodies that make up the band’s sound. They record all their songs the day they are written, (bar one or two vocal parts) on basic equipment. They use whatever space is available in various households, slate quarries, fields, woods and old folks homes (“we don’t have the monies to record our music in a studio”) around their local area. This unpretentious, DIY approach to making and producing music means that the sum total of their output is something rather exciting and original. Their music is characterised by buzzing guitars, pummeled drums, great hooks and impressively accomplished song writing. There is no way this band can be less than a year old, but they are. Since forming in December 2009 We Are Animal have been prolific both in their output and their live presence ever since. Armed with their home demos they have already been playlisted on BBC Radio 1 + 6, XFM, NME Radio, Kerrang and Juice FM and a bagful of regional programmes. NME highlighted We Are Animal as their breakthrough artist of the week in late August, and a brief search of the blogging world reveals a growing and enthusiastic following. They were also asked to play Radio One’s Big Weekend in Bangor by Huw Stephens who is a big fan. Their debut single ’1268′ was released on ‘Too Pure/Beggars Banquet’ in June followed by their self released September single ‘Black Magic’. Both appear on this special 12 track Japanese edition of their debut album.
Catch them behaving like actual animals on the following dates:
Wed 29th September – Dead Young Records Presents… @ Oporto – Leeds
Thurs 30th September – Dalston Live @ The Junction Room – London
Fri 1st October – The Cellars – Portsmouth
Sat 2nd October – Oakford Social Club – Reading
Wed 13th October – TBC – Bristol
Fri 22nd October – SWN Festival, Clwb Ifor Bach – Cardiff
Fri 19th November – Playhard @ Charlotte St Blues – London
Sat 27th November – Sheffield University – Sheffield
NEW VIDEO FROM WE ARE ANIMAL: BLACK MAGIC

In Snowdonia, North Wales Owain Ginsberg used to trek up to quarries and forests with nothing but an 8 track recording machine and his guitar for company. Next came actual, physical band members in the form of the Hamer brothers (CASTLES), Sion Edwards on drums and Liam Simpson on keys. The strength of their demos alone attracted taste makers such as Huw Stephens and by the time their debut single came out they found themselves playlisted on Radio One, NME Radio and XFM. Their live shows truly live up to the bands name and bagged them slots with Radio One’s Big Weekend in Bangor and the SWN festival amongst others.
