THE MAN WITH THE BEAUTIFUL EYES

“Man with the Beautiful Eyes” is one of my personal Bukowski favorites.  This short 5 minute abstract animated film from director  Jonathan Hodgson (1999) is both visually complementary to the beat-poem narrative and completely engaging. Four young friends are drawn to a strange house that their parents tell them to avoid, leading the narrator to believe his parents are trying to kill beauty. He is ultiamtely forced to accept the gray and uptight world of adulthood and fear anything strong and beautiful. Thanks mom and dad. I kid. Really stunning little adaptation to watch though, that kind of catches you off guard, if you have’nt already come across it.

FREE MP3: THE WAR ON DRUGS: COMIN’ THROUGH

The War On Drugs debut release Wagonwheel Blues landed in our laps like a shimmering plate of all that is good in the world of American rock ‘n’ roll. We weren’t the only ones either as the album provoked words like “stunning,” “inspiring,” and “sublime” from Rolling Stone, Fader, Spin and more. Looking again at that space between the horizons, The War On Drugs makes another forecast, October 26 they bring you Future Weather. This album finds The War On Drugs once again at the blurred edges of American music: overexposing studio limitations, piling tape upon tape to maximum density, and then — with each song — they pull off the scaffolding to reveal what sticks, keeping only what’s absolutely necessary and dig into what sounds like the best kind of fucked up. As on their debut, Wagonwheel Blues, they take small moments occurring over multiple tapes and multiple song versions, and put every last drop of trust in their own instinct of momentum.
Future Weather is a provocative — sometimes playful, sometimes weighty — glimpse into The War On Drugs’ song-sculpting process, a process that remains a big mystery even to those on the inside. While some bands are content to merely pace the abyss, The War On Drugs coast through it.  And along the way, Future Weather sidesteps most every connotation associated with the EP format. There’s a true coalescence and symmetry here, one of wash and drone, of momentum and tone, but also of theme. Friendship, loyalty and keeping a group of spiritual brothers together are all themes that songwriter Adam Granduciel focuses in on for Future Weather. “Wondering where my friends are going / Wondering why they didn’t take me / Looking out the window of my room / Looking out where something once ran wild,” he sings on “Brothers” with a sense of soured peace, leaving out all the right things, leaving room in there for the shared experiences of your own friends. There are cues taken from our best American songwriters, yet The War On Drugs are wise enough to also implode or send themselves into outer space when the moment calls for it. The driving organ riff  that pushes “Baby Missiles” may be inspired by a fever dream of Springsteen or Dire Straits more than any particular jam. And the endless layers of guitar melody and atmospherics of “Comin’ Through,” rather than add weight to the vessel, only work to fill its sails with warmer and warmer winds. Future Weather will be available in stores October 26 (TBD in the UK). In the meantime, check out the first single “Comin’ Through” below. You can also catch The War On Drugs on tour this fall at select dates in the Eastern U.S. including an appearance at Hopscotch Festival in Raleigh, North Carolina September 9.

FREE MP3: COMMON GRACKLE: THE GREAT DEPRESSION

Welcome to the world of Common Grackle, the collaboration of two Canadian musical wiz kids – indie pop songwriter and mad-cap illustrator, Gregory Pepper and Saskatoon psych hip hop producer Factor. The Great Depression is what happens when Factor’s recognizable banging drums get enveloped in Gregory Pepper’s lush harmonies, hilariously cynical lyrics, and gorgeous instrumentation. The Great Depression blurs all sorts of lines and tears down all sorts of genre definitions and definitely requires your time. Think the somber confessionals of Elliott Smith, re-worked by Dangermouse!!

NEW VIDEO FROM DEAD MANS BONES: PA PA POWER

Is there anything more frustrating than when an actor turns out to be a good musician too? Dead Man’s Bones is just one more reason to hate or secretly become facebook fans of Ryan Gosling (Half Nelson, The Notebook). Formed between “the Gos” and his buddy Zach Shields, Dead Man Bones released an unexpectedly solid debut album last year, A Never Let a Lack of Talent Get You Down on their own label, Werewolf Heart. The band collaborated with the Silverlake Conservatory Children’s Choir in an elderly residents home to create their new, touching,  self-made and not so surprisingly very cinematic video for ” Pa Pa Power”. This is like a really solid short film filled with melancholy sweetness touching on darker elements that all gets reconciled into an upbeat dance party and new gospel choir version of “Pa Pa Power”. NEW VIDEO PREVIEW FROM THE TING TINGS: HANDS

Tuesday October 12, 2010 sees the release of the brand new single “Hands” from The Ting Tings, which you can find streaming on the band’s Facebook page. A work of pure electro-disco heaven, “Hands” is a global shout out to everyone who’s working too hard. Written, performed and produced by Jules and Katie in their home made studio in Berlin, it has been mixed by label mate Calvin Harris. Check out a sneak peak of the song with a clip of the band introducing the track in the ny post.

The Ting Tings launched themselves into the world with their DIY hardcore-pop in 2008 to massive acclaim and success, with their hit singles “That’s Not My Name” and “Shut Up And Let Me Go” along with “Great DJ” selling over 4 million copies worldwide. With their music becoming the soundtrack not only on the radio but also to countless shows and films from “Slumdog Millionaire” to the likes of “Gossip Girl”, The Ting Tings debut album “We Started Nothing” went on to selling over two million copies. They also won the prestigious Ivor Novello Award for “Best Album” in 2009 and received a Grammy Nomination for “Best New Artist”.  Earlier this summer I had the rare opportunity to catch these guys live performing in a community center gym on the lower east side in New York and it was one of the best shows I have seen in a long time. Seeing these guys perform live is a must on the bucket list.

After a whirlwind of touring live in the US, Europe and almost everywhere else non-stop for the last two years, The Ting Tings chose to move to Berlin to live and work. Renting out a disused basement jazz club in East Berlin’s Freidrichshain District, they turned it into their own studio, much as they had done back in 2007 when they took up residence in the artist’s haven The Islington Mill in Salford, near Manchester where “We Started Nothing” was made. Spending the winter of 2009 with their music equipment, fairy-lights, pens and gaffer tape and with no TV, no visiting friends, no distractions at all, they wrote, recorded and produced their next album. “Hands” is the first track to come from those sessions.

“Our time in Berlin was a fresh start, with no rules again” explains Jules, “when you’ve had an album that’s been successful, the danger is you go back in the studio, look back and try and emulate it”. “it’d be so lazy and easy to make the same album twice” adds Katie. A blast of the dancefloor monster “Hands” shows they mean what they say – a totally brand new sound from The Ting Tings and an exciting taste of things to come.

FREE MP3: FUTURE ISLANDS: WALKING THROUGH THAT DOOR

It’s been a banner year for Future Islands thus far and it’s only getting busier.  The band spent more than two months on the road in the US (not including a couple of other smaller tours) and released their debut Thrill Jockey single In The Fall as well as their critically acclaimed second album In Evening Air.  Now the band is getting ready to spend another month on the road in Europe and marking the occasion with a new EP called Undressed and by releasing another track from In Evening Air.

MP3 Download: “WALKING THROUGH THAT DOOR”

The songs for Undressed were recorded quickly in Baltimore’s Mobtown Studios for broadcast on WYPR’s “The Signal” as the band was preparing for their first ever acoustic show at the Metro Gallery in Baltimore.  The sessions at Mobtown served as much as a practice as it did a recording, as Future Islands brought in three additional musicians to fill out the unplugged ensemble: Denny Bowen (Double Dagger) on drums, Kate Barutha on cello and Devlin Rice on acoustic guitar. Those performances saw Future Islands strip down rich textures and lush melodies to their core. Samuel Herring’s always-affecting vocals are all the more haunting in this new setting.

FREE MP3: PIERCED ARROW: THE DOORWAY

Pierced Arrow,  formed from the wreckage of Portland Oregon’s Dead Moon, an underground cult garage rock band from 1987 to 2006, embody a fiercely independent DIY ethos and rock and roll spirit that is unmatched by most musicians today. Band mates Fred Cole and real life sweetheart of 42 years, Toody stubbornly record everything in mono, press their own albums on vintage equipment and live out in the woods in a mansion they build for themselves.  Six grandkids later, they still play raw, ragged  straightforward rock ‘n’ roll, garage punk that comes from a musical culture spanning 30 years and sounds relevant despite the bands youngest member being 39. These guys are no joke.

The band has announced an upcoming North American tour that begins September 30 at legendary club 7th St. Entry in Minneapolis, MN.The ex-Dead Moon veterans will play 21 dates across the US before closing out the tour in Weed, CA on October 23rd.

The jaunt comes in the wake of Pierced Arrows’ recent split 7″ with label mates Black Lips, released in July via Scion A/V. In keeping with the other releases in the Vice-curated Scion Garage 7″ series, both bands debuted new songs on the single. Pierced Arrows’ offering, “The Doorway”, is a keen demonstration of the raw, unbridled rock that collaborators Fred and Toody Cole have honed over their 30+ year career. Scion A/V also recently released the band’s first proper music video for “This is the Day” from their most recent full length Descending Shadows.
