FREE MP3: COOL RUNNINGS: WHEN I GOT HIGH WITH YOU

Cool Runnings, the band out of Knoxville, not the Doug E. Doug vehicle, is the brainchild of Brandon Biondo (Royal Bangs) and Forrest Ferguson: a collaborative project between two front men that benefits from the creative contributions of all eight members of the band. On their new EP, Babes Forever, they drop their southern roots and bring a real west coast vibe with some “tasteful” California alt-nudity cover art. Clinching the lead for best album art of the summer.

DANGERMOUSE, SPARKLEHORSE AND DAVID LYNCH: DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL

Dark Night of the Soul, the treatise written by Spanish poet and Roman Catholic Mystic Saint John of the Cross has  become an expression used to describe a phase in a person’s spiritual life, a metaphor for a certain loneliness and desolation. The other  “Dark Night of the Soul”, the mysterious multi-media project/album involving Danger Mouse , Mark Linkous , and David Lynch has proven just as cryptic. While the unreleased album featuring Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse, the Flaming Lips, Iggy Pop, Frank Black, Julian Casablancas, Jason Lytle, and James Mercer of the Shins, remains on “indefinite hiatus” after a dispute with the record label EMI, the book is available for sale on new interactive website for Dark Night of the Soul along with a blank CD.  Its a shame because it’s a great album that everyone should hear. Luckily, it has made its way onto the webs, youtube and some select record shops in New York if you can find it. Check out some videos from tracks on the album below and stream the entire album HERE.

THE FLAMING LIPS: THE SPARROW LOOKS UP AT THE MACHINE

The Flaming lips continue to make bizarre videos that stick with you long after you click pause.  if its not Lips front man Wayne Coyne baring his balls while traversing inside a man-sized plastic bubble over throngs of naked nymph-like cyclists into a giant furry vagina, then it’s a taped-up, blindfolded women in her skivies using her blood to create finger (and toe) paint art while the monkey watches. And just when things get weird enough to make you feel increasingly uncomfortable watching this clip at work, the giant furry vagina ball shows up for a cameo to buy some art. Don’t ask us, we have no idea. Maybe a commentary on the oil industry?

The Lips are certainly a tough act to categorize, they have always pushed the boundaries on weirdness with bizarre song and album titles like “Psychiatric Explorations of the Fetus with Needles” and “Yeah, I Know It’s a Drag… But Wastin’ Pigs Is Still Radical” and are known for their eccentric  live shows which feature costumes, balloons, puppets, giant heads, Coyne in his plastic bubble and yes, the  giant stage vagina… so their latest album Embryonic, and this new video  seems a snug fit.

FREE MP3: TAME IMPALA: WHY DON’T YOU MAKE UP YOUR MIND

Discosalt Video of the Week 20/6/10: Aussie buzz band Tame Impala have released a new stoner friendly video for “Why don’t you make up your mind”  off Innerspeaker, out this month. Taking a slightly different visual cue from the cinematic “Solitude is Bliss” video, which featured a post-apocalyptic anti-dog world, the trio perform their warm psychedelic hypno-groove melodic rock in a field of grass, which clearly the band is familiar with.

M.I.A.: MAKING POP PROPAGANDA

M.I.A aka “The Tamil Tigress” seems to be spreading her pop propaganda everywhere these days, from a street art campaign on 13th street between Broadway and 4th Avenue, to the New York Times/Twitter drama over her political statements and most recent video for Born Free.

Most recently, M.I.A. has a new photo spread, brilliantly shot by renowned Dutch photographer Ruud Baan in the Art Magazine  Spread , created by, for, and about cultural instigators. Check out some of the shoot images below:

Debut Album "I Will Be" by the Dum Dum Girls

DUM DUM GIRLS: JAIL LA LA

Debut Album "I Will Be" by the Dum Dum GirlsWe know all about the sound tearing through the American underground – it’s defiantly lo-fi, delightfully murky, gauzy, blissed-out, garage-retro, and sticky as bubblegum. And nobody does it better than the Dum Dum Girls. The Los Angeles quartet was the talk of South by Southwest ’10, and I Will Be, their recently-released full-length, is already drawing raves. The album’s amalgam of psychedelia, Sixties girl group insouciance, Pavement-inspired alt-pop and acid-drenched d.i.y. attitude makes it the must-have set of the spring. Pitchfork raved about I Will Be, calling the album “giddy” and “exquisite”, and praising frontwoman Kristin “Dee Dee” Gundred for her pop smarts and coy, provocative singing.

Dee Dee has only been at it since 2008 – I Will Be is the first full-length by Dum Dum Girls – but she’s already picked up some well-known friends. Frankie Rose, late of Crystal Stilts, the Outs, and the Vivian Girls, adds her distinctive, imaginative drumming to the project. Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs plays hot-wire guitar on one track. Dum Dum Girls have shared bills with Male Bonding, Girls, the Crocodiles, and many other d.i.y. luminaries. Finally, Dee Dee scored a production coup: the legendary Richard Gottehrer is behind the board for I Will Be. Gottehrer, writer of “My Boyfriend’s Back” and “I Want Candy”, and producer of Blondie, Link Wray and the Go-Gos, has helped the band achieve a timeless sound at once thoroughly contemporary and deeply rooted in classic pop 45s. He’s even polished a few of the rough edges (just a few!) and placed the emphasis where it should be – squarely on Dee Dee’s hooky songwriting.
With “Jail La La”, Dum Dum Girls have delivered a single infectious enough to pull mainstream listeners into the underground haze. Coming on like a distressed version of the Shangri-Las, Dee Dee and her bandmates spin a fractured tale of sex, desire, and imprisonment. Video director Christin Turner is in perfect tune with the group – her inspired clip for “Jail La La” echoes Sixties art cinema, trashy women-in-prison flicks, 120 Minutes-style late-Eighties music videos, and archival girl group footage. The film is grainy (of course), a little bit jumpy (which suits the song), experimental, and profoundly communicative. Most of it is shot in muted grayscale, but a few details are colored in – Dee Dee’s red lipstick, for instance. In one arresting sequence, words are scrawled on the screen while the frontwoman’s lips and tongue continue to “la la” at the camera. Elsewhere, she cruises the highway on a gorgeous motorbike, gets arrested, poses for a mugshot, and hugs her worried boyfriend. We don’t see his face – he’s busy kissing her neck – but we do watch hers. In his embrace, she takes drags of her cigarette, her expression impassive, inscrutable, and more than a little mysterious.

NORTHSIDE FEST: THE PASS, SLOW ANIMAL, THE ZOOKEEPERS, FAMILY TREES

As the Northside Fest draws nearer, we’re very excited to announce a showcase hosted by We Listen for You (sister blog to Backseat Sandbar) at Glasslands on Saturday June 26th featuring several great bands including one of our personal favorites, The Pass. Tickets are $10 at the door and free for Northside badge holders (and the pass will be well worth the $50).

The lineup for the night includes Family Trees, a Brooklyn-based band with a 50′s dream pop sound with nightmarish undertones which are both catchy and dark. The Zookeepers bring explosive energy to the set with beautifully twisted tunes.  Slow Animal is going to be one of the bands to watch for 2010 and their free EP (grab it HERE) shows why. Last, but certainly not least, The Pass is set to take over New York, playing a series of shows coming up.  Each set is sure to bring one of the best dance parties you’ve ever experienced, with five synths being played in the band, this 80′s throwback has the feel of a Passion Pit and/or Phoenix.  This will be their first New York show and is certain to be the start of a long romance with the city.

FIXED: A FILM FOR H BY HARRIS FROM MANNY BONETT

Fixed-gear enthusiasts obsessed with “riding deep” should check out a short film called “Fixed” by British accessory designer, H by Harris. While this is really just a promotional video to create a viral campaign for a new collection targeted towards fixed-gear riders, director Manny Bonett manages to capture some of the psyche of a fixie  rider.
